The two caterpillars definitely represent Alma and Pedro, talking about how they were inseparable but they have to part ways and build their own future basically blossom into butterflies - *spoilers* below ⬇️
I think the caterpillars parting ways and going into cocoons blossoming into butterflies is significant to in the movie where Pedro sacrifices himself for Alma and the other villagers, it was up to her to lead people into a sanctuary where they’d be safe while Pedro paid the ultimate price symbolizing the two caterpillars turned butterflies going their own way and building their own future.

@@Lunafroyo Alma's encanto or magic is also a representation of her chrysalis. Her intense drive to protect her family literally created mountains to cover their abode from outsiders. Sadly, she lost sight of what was important and focused too much on keeping her encanto alive, ergo, covering her family in a cocoon. That's why it was necessary for Mirabel to break them out of Alma's magic, letting her accept things, be free from her grief, and focus on the family.

I'm not Latino, I'm a Filipino but I can really connect both to Encanto and Coco. There's something in them that not only feels familiar but feels like home. You know, how they tackle family dynamics and love that got me teary eyed. There's something in Spanish language, especially in songs, that makes it feel so passionate, so emotional, so heartfelt.

@@GypsyDanger2000 There's an English version of the song you can look up. @grandiose, one of the top commenters, has also posted the lyrics and you may be able to click Google's "See Translation" button to see the words' rough meanings.
Basically, the song is about two caterpillars that are in love and stay together in a world that keeps changing. They embrace each other while the wind blows at them and something is growing in them. The chorus tell the caterpillars not to hold on too tight to each other because they both know there's a time to grow (which they have to do apart from each other) and a time to reunite. Miracles happen, chrysalis form, and you have to part to build your own future. Right before the bridge, the caterpillars are disoriented from all the turbulence but they do what they gotta do, which is turn into cocoons, to change in a world that keeps changing. In the end, the butterflies are told not to hold on too tight to each other, they have to grow, to fly apart, to reunite. They are the miracles, breaking their chrysalis. They have to fly and find their way to their future.
Absolutely heartbreaking when paired with Abuela and Pedro's story. They were the two caterpillars who were in love and held on to each other through the storms of life. But then Abuela had to continue her growing alone when Pedro sacrificed himself. Abuela herself undergoes a huge transformation through the process with her processing her grief, protecting her family, and eventually realizing where she has hurt her family by holding on too tight to her ideals of "protection" and being able to change for the better. Encanto is insanely deep with its symbolism and lessons; I feel like I learn something new every time I watch it. (Kind of like Everything, Everywhere, All at Once haha)

I’ve only just realised that it had the same melody as Abuela’s verse in “the family Madrigal”
“Dos oruguitas” = “we swear to always”
“Enamoradas” = “help those around us”
“Pasan sus nochss” = “and earn the Miracle”
“Y madrugadas” = “that somehow found us”
“Llenas de hambre” = “the town keeps growing”
“Siguen andando” = “the world keeps turning”
“Y navegando un mundo” = “but work and dedication”
“Que cambia, y sigue cambiando” = “will keep the miracle burning”
“Navegando un Mundo” = “and each new generation”
“Que cambia, y sigue cambiando” = “must keep the miracle burning”

Lin Manuel Miranda is the absolute king of character motifs. There are so many examples of this. Another is Isabela's part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is the same tunr as a few lines in her song "What Else Can I Do" when Mirabel sings about how great Isabela's life is.

    Dos oruguitas enamoradas
    Pasan sus noches y madrugadas
    Llenas de hambre
Siguen andando y navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Navegando un mundo

    Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento
    Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
Ay, mariposas, no se aguanten más

      To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
      Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning

Ugh, this song... I cried so hard watching Abuela's life and how hard she had it after Abuelo died protecting them.
In a sense, and as an adult, you completely understand why Abuela forgot about the gift. She was so afraid of losing everything because she has lost everything before. You understand that as she got older, and gained more through her family, the fear just got worse because now, she had more to lose. She lost the forest for the trees.
But Mirabel hasn't been through that sort of loss. She sees it through her innocence and love for her family. Arguably, she saw it much clearer from her point of view in the shadows than Abuala did, because Abuela had the responsibility of carrying the family. Both of them love their family and community so much, which is why both of them fought so hard to try and protect the encanto, even if Abuela was wrong in how she tried to protect them.

@@balusmbox well another thing is because abuela lived the rest of her life as the care taker, as a widow there was no one to care for her.
She put all the responsibility as a single mother to rebuild her family and keep them safe.
She spent years after her husband's murder in survival mode, unable to live in true peace.
Because if she was every vulnerable again, in her mind she could lose it all.
So her actions are not excused, she truly believed she was protecting her family and her second chance.
When she says "people rely on us" she means "me".😭

Agreed I feel like so many people hate on her way too much which I get it and I am in no way excusing her actions what she did was wrong. But at the same time you can see why she became the way she became. What she went through was not easy and sometimes trauma can make us do irrational things, again our trauma doesn't excuse the bad things we do as a result, but it makes you understand them a bit more. I think we tend to forget that she wasn't always like that and that she seemed to be a happy and kind person before the event that took place. The crazy thing is I've seen people excuse toxic characters' actions all the time such as Klaus Michaelson, the darkling, Damon Salvatore, etc. But some of those people don't do the same for her which I'm not saying they should excuse anyone's terrible actions. The difference is though that Abuela did something that not a lot of those type of characters do, she realized her mistakes, apologized, took accountability for them, and tried to fix them. My point is that I don't like when people pick and choose which of those type of characters to feel bad for and excuse their actions because nobody should be excusing bad things that characters do in the first place and because it's kind of hypocritical. Sorry That was completely off topic.

Abuela thought she needed to be worthy of the gift by helping the community. She felt so much pressure to be worthy and deserving she put her and her families need to the side. You can't have a successful life if u don't have a strong foundation at home.

    In two buds
    Well warmed
    With new dreams
Now there's only one thing left
    To do what's necessary
In the world that keeps changing

    There comes our miracle x4

Anyone can listen to this song and think of how the lyrics is related to him or her (mother to child, grandparents to younger generation, teacher to students, etc...). This is a wonderful song, and the song writer and his team must be very proud of this masterpiece.

Honestly, it is super neat that the story in Dos Oruguitas is symbolic of Abuela’s character growth and the family’s evolution.
Dos Oruguitas is essentially about a pair of caterpillars that cling to each other, through all types of weather, hoping to eventually explore the world, but being held back by fear and apprehension. And then, they eventually become butterflies and fly away together to explore the world.
Abuela starts the movie as the metaphorical “caterpillar”; she wants her family to stick together and be a perfect family, but in the process stifles their true wants and desires. She wanted to be strong and authoritative, yet deep down, she was afraid of losing her home, and that fear caused all of the generational issues, because, in her attempt to never lose her home again, she ends up being closed off and losing her family emotionally (Mirabel, Bruno, Isabella, and to an extent the rest of her family).
Then, after talking to Mirabel and genuinely opening up to somebody about her grief for the first time, she -and the rest of the Madrigals - becomes the metaphorical “butterfly”. They are no longer held down by fear and doubt, and are free to blossom into their true selves. Funnily enough, Bruno leaving the walls is basically him coming out of a metaphorical “chrysalis”, and Mirabel is associated with butterflies (they’re on her dress!).

My bf and I used to be two kiddos who were in love with each other. It wasn't perfect, but we were happy.
Things happened and we got separated, and it was horrible. We didn't know anything of each other during years even though we wanted to.
We were able to meet again and find out the different persons we grow up to be.

This song hits so hard, and it has to much emotion in it. It’s a slow song but at the same time tells such a deep story. The movie brings even more emotion and expression to this song. And I personally think that the Spanish version is more emotional and nostalgic. I literally listen to this song on repeat all the time.
You know, when you listen to this song, you feel something. It’s that feeling of sadness yet happiness. It’s that feeling highlighting the memories of your past and of your life. It reminds you of your inner insecurities, but it also reminds you of the joyful events that occurred. This song is confusing, in a way. It’s only talking about two caterpillars growing into butterflies and finding their own future, but the emotion being expressed in this song is unmatchable. It’s just incredible how a song talking about something so normal and common and make an audience feel the waves of nostalgia coming towards them.
And I think the way the singer sings this song is phenomenal. Throughout most of the song, he keeps that soft and gentle tone, which really adds great emotion to the song. If he was singing the song in any other way, it wouldn’t be as emotion and nostalgia-packed. The little parts where he goes slightly out of tune also add a gentle tone to the song, therefore enhancing the emotion. And he raises his voice in the necessary parts, to add in the tone of longing and sadness.
This song is phenomenal and so emotion-filled in all factors. This is definitely going to be one of the main songs I listen to. This song is definitely enchanting.
