I think this number was the one where the improvement from the 1961 version was biggest. In the 1961 version, I was like, "Oh, that was cute." In this one, I was half-laughing and half-crying throughout the whole song. It's even more powerful when you think about the fact that 60 years later, the lyrics are just as raw and relevant about how bad American society is at dealing with kids once they get anywhere inside "the system."

Steven Spielberg once again making an amazing film, that anyone enjoys. Well deserved Oscar for Anita. My dream is to be an actress. Steven Spielberg's films always had made me want to be an actress.
Spielberg was able to make this one of the most impactful and inciteful songs in West Side Story. Officer Krupke previously said that he was on the Jets side. But when the new member was going to break, and needed someone to take him under their wing. Meaning if Krupke were there he would've been able to tell him that it was an accident, maybe get through to him, and have him give up the gang life before he gets in too deep. But he wasn't there. (Also, the other gang members couldn't even pronounce Krupkes name correctly to further emphasize how little respect they have for him and for authority as a whole.) Instead the boy was surrounded by his fellow gang members who told him all of the possible charges he would be facing, and what to say to beat the system. I hadn't seen the original version in a while but this version...I was really rooting for the boy and was so disappointed when he became just like the rest of them. (For the record he sings the soda jerker line.) What is also interesting to note is how the Jets talk about how every adult in their life has given up on them. Yet Doc, and his wife have always been there for them. Willing to give members jobs so they don't break probation, offer advice, and be that support. They just can't see it. Btw I asked my PR dad about the nail scene at the beginning of the movie there is an old Hispanic tradition of scarring the daughter so she doesn't get too prideful about being more beautiful than her mother. She is to remain dutiful. When the guys pricked his ear with a nail, it signaled to the audience that the boy should go home and be a dutiful son to his mother instead of having his ego inflated by gang tensions.

I liked most songs more in the original, but this song in the remake was the exception. Having them go from one person to another to help and not getting it made you understand that both of these sides were messed up from social constructs. Release the video it deserves!
I have seen comments where they say that the original was the best one,,, but man, i really love this one, apart from the scene, in the audio i can really catch the fun in their voices, a really great scene!
Actually, this is kind of a sad song. It's like they are proud of being no-goods, because that's who they are. It's how they got labeled, and they own it. They don't want to change it, they want to be with their friends, having a different opinion would make them an outsider. And, they all come from bad families, so having fun and doing things togther is better than facing reality. Their lifes suck, and they make it less sucking with pushing it away and making fun of it and themselves.
This was done so much better than the old version. Loved how cleverly they used several items from the set, that was the police station, to make the number more theatrical, brought the lyrical description of the song to life.
i love this song cuz its like you watch the scene and its so much fun, and its also funny but then you actually listen to the lyrics and its so deep and impactful, but i feel like it hits more because its a funny scene so when you realize its actually quite sad you really kinda sit on it for a while. i feel like its a great way to get the message across

I was in West Side Story in high school and had the role of Action Boy, who has most the solo in the song it was a lot of fun. The only reason why I did theater was to meet girls and boy did it work.
SPOIER ALERT Knowing Riff is in this scene in the original movie, I am so very sad that he’s not in it in the new West Side Story film :( Mike Faist’s performance in West Side Story is just phenomenal. I just wish he had more screen time. It would be great if he was in this scene, my favorite actor atm and one of my favorite scenes in this film.
@@charlesheld3082 you are correct. I researched the scene. The guys in this number do feel mildly likable compared to rocket pants riff. I do like diesel leading this number rather than riff. But it certainly makes him a darker character.
In the original 1957 Broadway version, Riff did not sing this song either, because this song took place after the rumble. The 1961 film placed it before the rumble, censored some lyrics, and gave Riff the lead vocals. The 2021 version takes place in the police station, is placed before the Rumble like the 1961 film, but does not feature Riff like the 1957 Original Broadway Version and features the original uncensored lyrics.

Fun fact: When Stephen Sondheim was coming up with this song, he wanted to go a bit far by having them sing at the end “Gee, Officer Krupke - F$#@ you!” But Columbia Pictures, owning the rights to the album, said the album would not be able to be shipped to other states without violating the obscenity laws at the time. So Sondheim had to change it to “Krup you” and he said it was the best lyric in the whole musical. While it would’ve be fitting to hear the F-bomb dropped, “Krup” definitely does add a little something that makes this musical more special and unique. I was act kinda hoping they would include the F-bomb in this remake just to see if they would do something a little different. So I was really eager to eager the ending of this song the most on the soundtrack just to see if they did it.
One thing I can't help but observe is the fact a song that mentions smoking marijuana, and calls parents bastards and SOBs, has been uploaded to the Disney music channel, the same channel with Moana and Frozen songs.
Those are the original lyrics from the 1957 Broadway play (the 1961 movie toned it down a bit, but kept the marijuana line). As for it being on a Disney channel? And? Disney produces and distributes PG-13 movies under its name, which Westside Story is rated. And, since the mid-1980’s, Disney has even produced and distributed R-rated movies under its subsidiaries. In short, the song’s lyrics are no secret, and parents should monitor what their kids watch on the internet, if this type of content worries them.
I will say, Iiked the original version of the song more. I don't mind the updated lyrics cause they've been used for years, but the slower pace and more mellow delivery kinda ruined the song for me. The line delivery MADE the song for me and changing what was fundamental to me, just wasn't my forte. I lived off of the devastated, "I'M NO GOOD!" and the thick accented "I'm disturbed!" Maybe I'm just nit picking but Gee Officer Krupke was my favorite song...so...
These are actually the lyrics from the musical. For the original film, they had to change some of the lyrics because the sensors at the time were much more strict that they are today

Honestly one of the best scenes in a masterful movie!
hands down the best song and sequence in the movie.
I guess Race went up from news boy to gangster nice!!!
is it weird that i also thought that
@@faradaehmontana1257 Nope great minds think a like
patrick higgins carried this song and i will stand by that when he jumped in it just got 10x better
Totally agree
I liked most songs more in the original, but this song in the remake was the exception. Having them go from one person to another to help and not getting it made you understand that both of these sides were messed up from social constructs. Release the video it deserves!
I love whenever the word Feckless gets used
I have seen comments where they say that the original was the best one,,, but man, i really love this one, apart from the scene, in the audio i can really catch the fun in their voices, a really great scene!
That is exactly the point of the song. It is impressive that Sondheim wrote the lyrics 60 years ago and they stay equally relevant today.
Gee officer Krupke, Krup you!!! 😆
This was done so much better than the old version. Loved how cleverly they used several items from the set, that was the police station, to make the number more theatrical, brought the lyrical description of the song to life.
The first time I saw the film, I was singing along to this song!
The whole movie was amazing, but this scene has to be my favorite part.
this scene was amazing the whole movie was (:
i love this song cuz its like you watch the scene and its so much fun, and its also funny but then you actually listen to the lyrics and its so deep and impactful, but i feel like it hits more because its a funny scene so when you realize its actually quite sad you really kinda sit on it for a while. i feel like its a great way to get the message across
I love the movie and WSS' ensemble
honestly he's such a highlight
This is my favorite scene
BEN COOK MY BELOVED
Same.
I love Ben Cook
Oh, look at yous
You feckless friggin' disappointments
Now give me one good reason I shouldn't throw the book at ya
Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke
You gotta understand
It's just our bringin' upke
That gets us out of hand
Our mothers all are junkies
Our fathers all are drunks
Golly Moses, naturally we're punks!
Gee, Officer Krupke, we're very upset
We never had the love that every child oughta get
We ain't no delinquents
We're misunderstood
Deep down inside us, there is good!
There is good!
There is good, there is good
There is untapped good
Like inside, the worst of us is good
Oh, that's a touching good story
Let me tell it to the world!
Just tell it to the judge
Dear kindly Judge, your Honor
My parents treat me rough
With all their marijuana
They won't give me a puff
They didn't wanna have me
But somehow I was had
Leapin' lizards, that's why I'm so bad!
Right!
Officer Krupke, you're really a square
This boy don't need a judge, he needs an analyst's care!
It's just his neurosis that oughta be curbed
He's psychologically disturbed!
I'm disturbed!
We're disturbed, we're disturbed
We're the most disturbed
Like we're psychologically disturbed
Ye, ye hear ye
In the opinion on this court
The boy's depraved on account he ain't had a normal home
Hey, I'm depraved on account I'm deprived!
My father is a bastard
My ma's an S.O.B.
My grandpa's always plastered
My grandma pushes tea
My sister wears a mustache
My brother wears a dress
Goodness gracious, that's why I'm a mess!
Yes!
Officer Krupke, you're really a slob
This boy don't need a doctor, just a good honest job
Society's played him a terrible trick
And sociologically he's sick!
I am sick!
We are sick, we are sick
We are sick, sick, sick
Like we're sociologically sick!
In my professional opinion
What we've got here is a run-of-the-mill juvenile delinquent
And juvenile delinquency is a social disease
He's got a social disease?
Bring him to a social worker
Wait, can I catch it by catching him?
Dear kindly social worker
They say go earn a buck
Like be a soda jerker
Which means like be a schmuck
It's not I'm anti-social
I'm only anti-work
Gloryosky, that's why I'm a jerk!
Eek!
Officer Krupke, you've done it again
This boy don't need a job, he needs a year in the pen
It ain't just a question of misunderstood
Deep down inside him, he's no good!
I'm no good!
We're no good, we're no good!
We're no earthly good
Like the best of us is no damn good!
The trouble is he's crazy
The trouble is he drinks
The trouble is he's lazy
The trouble is he stinks
The trouble is he's growing
The trouble is he's grown
Krupke, we got troubles of our own!
Gee, Officer Krupke
We're down on our knees
'Cause no one wants a fellow with a social disease
Gee, Officer Krupke
What are we to do?
Gee, Officer Krupke
Krup you!
Can we be honest here, for the few of us that can relate to being misfits, that get in trouble a lot... This song def hits different. Especially if you're also a musical theater kid. (Jacky haha if you know what I mean 🤣)
Watched a stage version of this where Krupke was on stage being pranked by the Jets during the musical interludes. Good times.
I'm depraved on a count i'm DEPRIVED! my favorite scene.
I can't wait to see this in the film! Was always one of my favourite scenes
I was in West Side Story in high school and had the role of Action Boy, who has most the solo in the song it was a lot of fun. The only reason why I did theater was to meet girls and boy did it work.
SPOIER ALERT
Knowing Riff is in this scene in the original movie, I am so very sad that he’s not in it in the new West Side Story film :(
Mike Faist’s performance in West Side Story is just phenomenal. I just wish he had more screen time. It would be great if he was in this scene, my favorite actor atm and one of my favorite scenes in this film.
Is he not in this scene at all? I thought he was just not leading it.
@@aquament Nope. No Riff in this version. His omission from this comic number makes the Riff character a lot darker.
The 2021 version takes place in the police station, is placed before the Rumble like the 1961 film, but does not feature Riff like the 1957 Original Broadway Version and features the original uncensored lyrics.
because they're musically following the original 1957 broadway version and riff wasn't in that
Credits to Kevin Csolak (Diesel), John Michael Fiumara (Big Deal), Jess LeProtto (A-Rab), Ben Cook (Mouthpiece), Kyle Allen (Balkan), Myles Erlick (Snowboy), and Patrick Higgins (Baby John).
1961年の映画では脇役でしかなかった彼らが2021年の映画では生き生きと場面の主役になっていて好きな場面です。

"Morning weasle" (the names wisel why can't you get it right)
"Well I'll call you sweetheart if you spot me 50 papes" (drop the dime and beat it)
"Oh whatever happend to romance"
ITS THE SAME GUY!!!! I was so shocked it was the same actor. The newsies and the jets are somewhat similar just in diffrent time periods (and the newsies have reason for causing trouble)
Yes, Ben Cook!!
The squeaky new york accent comes back BDBD
I literally squealed when I heard Ben Cook's voice
I loved so much this scene
Yeah it was so funny my brother won’t stop singing this song
I love love love this song
I loved the movie it was so great! The old one however is something I haven't seen as we watched this one in class 😅. Everyone seemed to have fun!!
Fallen in love with this movie too
I love this song more in the remake
I liked this version more than the original, and that was my favortie musical song
This makes me feel like watching the Curb episode.
my favorite scene. spielberg made me a west side story fan. and yes i was thirsty for every actor in this scene, so that helped. sorryaboutit.
Love this take!.
Literally how a bunch of us ran in high school lol
This was always my favorite song in West Side Story. This version is really good, but in my opinion I think the 1961 version is a little bit better
agreed. the start of this version is a bit off imo. i like the creative risks they took and most areas largely beinifited from them but i wouldn't say it's the case here lol. still fantastic tho!
Yes, the classic is better in my opinion, from the silly voices to the smacks to the head 😂
Wait until you see how it plays in the movie. The 2021 version is so much better than the 1961, in my opinion.
@@abbeyBominable123 considering the number as a whole, 2021 absolutely takes the cake. in terms of the actual track itself, still prefer the other renditions.
that was what i thought originally, i seen the movie a few hours ago and my option has 100% changed
I saw the movie and this song is IT it is the GREATEST
While the Tongiht and America are my favorites, this one is a lot of fun too.
My one and only favorite song from this . section 8 from the 50s
I’m from the UK and have been to see this twice in the past two weeks in the cinema 🤣

Can't wait to see the movie!!
I love this song
BEN COOK🤩🤩🤩
i like how in ONE song their vocabulary expaned
Seen the film today it was so great xx
Listening to this.... I keep on thinking of ANIMANIACS. lol
Kevin Csolak 👏👏👏
favorite part of the movie!
3:20 he sounds like elmo lol
😂 He actually does
I thought this might have been left out. Nobody's psychologically distoibed in 2021.
I love this version but I miss the “My Daddy beats my Mommy, my Mommy clobbers me!“ line
And the commie line.
In the original 1957 Broadway version, Riff did not sing this song, because this song took place after the rumble.
Very disappointed there's no punk enthusiastically exclaiming: "Hey I gotta social disease!" :D
Because no one can outdo the original done by Tamblin
Spielberg has made a movie better than 1961 version. Amazing
My English teacher showed us this movie, and I can say I liked no songs but this and the one before this
The Queen Mab speech from Romeo and Juliet set to music with a healthy dose of ACAB.
FUCKING. GENIUS.
Is there a version of this with the visuals anywhere, or not yet?
I know right
I cant wait till the vinyl
¡Qué alegre melodía!
I got very excited for this scene because of Larry David
One thing I can't help but observe is the fact a song that mentions smoking marijuana, and calls parents bastards and SOBs, has been uploaded to the Disney music channel, the same channel with Moana and Frozen songs.
The movie is rated PG-13
Those are the original lyrics from the 1957 Broadway play (the 1961 movie toned it down a bit, but kept the marijuana line). As for it being on a Disney channel? And? Disney produces and distributes PG-13 movies under its name, which Westside Story is rated. And, since the mid-1980’s, Disney has even produced and distributed R-rated movies under its subsidiaries. In short, the song’s lyrics are no secret, and parents should monitor what their kids watch on the internet, if this type of content worries them.
The most impressive thing is that those lyrics were actually written 60 years old.
I will say, Iiked the original version of the song more. I don't mind the updated lyrics cause they've been used for years, but the slower pace and more mellow delivery kinda ruined the song for me.
The line delivery MADE the song for me and changing what was fundamental to me, just wasn't my forte. I lived off of the devastated, "I'M NO GOOD!" and the thick accented "I'm disturbed!"
Maybe I'm just nit picking but Gee Officer Krupke was my favorite song...so...
I havent seen the new version yet just listened to the songs and anything not sung by the new maria just doesnt feel right to me
why did they remove the "Hey, I got a social disease!"??? im not trying to nitpick
but that was such a good line....
I really need to watch the film. The sound only thing feels kind of shallow.
This sicks
WOW🤣
Really loved that scene in the movie..
Why did they change some of the lyrics though?
These are actually the lyrics from the musical. For the original film, they had to change some of the lyrics because the sensors at the time were much more strict that they are today
