All the vocals are originally done by the actors like the film "Chicago". Rita Moreno singing "Someware" gave me shivers and tears. She is fantastic. I also thought the use of Spanish through out the film was brilliant . Although the film didn't make big time money it was to be expected due to covid19 and also the demographics of age appeal. The original film in 1961 had bad reviews but with time became an ultimate classic.
"West Side Story " will eventually become a major classic like the original did. Steven Spielberg is a top notch director and visionary. All four actors came across brilliant and had great chemistry.
Think what you will about Maria and Tony's relationship, but the point was never to show off romance. The point was to show how hatred can kill innocence and goodness even in children. Maria and Tony were KIDS. They met at a dance and decided they liked each other but somehow that innocent relationship snowballed into a fucking gang war. Maria insisting that she stay with Tony is the last vestiges of her childhood innocence FIGHTING to stay alive despite the violence going on around her. The story isn't about "two dumb teenagers thinking they're in love." It's about TWO KIDS TRYING TO BE KIDS AND BEING UNFAIRLY PUNISHED FOR IT.
This is there in the original Romeo and Juliet too. Juliet even has her doubts but Romeo is all gas no brakes. I guess they left that out in West side story, which makes the enchantment scene at the dance all the more important. That scene is one of the weaknesses of the recent rendition, although I loved it overall.
She has a lot of tallent, but I do think she would more classical training. Plus i dont know her range. The duet phantom of the opera gets to a high e. She could potentially make a great Christine.
@@kaepiper yes! She is a high soprano. Ive ovbiously never worked with her. But i know the music from WSS and POTO very well, and PHOTO is a lot higher, and more vocally demanding. The character of Cristine is a classically trained opera singer, and Rachel has openly admitted to having no formal training. So to do the role convincingly and in a healthy way night after night, she would definately need more training I think. That's not at all me trying to diss Rachel, I am just trying to be honest. She has a very lovely voice, great natural clear tone and nice placement. Lots of natural tallent. Just to do such a role justice, she would benefit from more training.
I hope they do get the Oscar because they all worked so hard.... and the presentation was very good..... all I said was like most remakes, it wasn't as good as the original.
thank god they used the original stage musical version rather than the cut-down version of the earlier film. The stage version is so much more powerful.

It goes directly from A Boy Like That right into I Have a Love. I have the Broadway score in front of me. The new film version is almost exactly the stage version, while the earlier film is not.
MRE----- my mother took my brother to see the original play -----the musical in Detroit ..but she wouldn't take me ,which was maddening..... because I was a pre-teen then, I guess.

I ALWAYS get emotional after listen this song and this remake made me cry. I love they added the little bit at the end, replacing the original lines from the script, with something hard for Anita (Ariana DeBose) to overcome and Maria (Rachel Zegler) asking if she can; giving this genuine bond grief and sorrow, and in the midst, acceptance. Also, it would make sense-Anita tends to be the part that walks away with the trophies-Chita Rivera, Rita Moreno, Karen Olivo. I’d be extremely surprised if DeBose doesn’t win, which she deserves to.

I don't feel bad for Maria at all. She and Tony didn't know enough about each other to be in love; they were in lust, if anything. Anita gets all of my sympathy. Tony killed Maria's big brother, a man she's known her whole life. All it took was Tony saying that Bernardo killed his bestie and he just lost it, and Maria was like, "Oh, okay. Sounds legit. Let's bang!" She was young, dumb, horny and selfish. And Tony was an idiot. This was a GREAT version of this song, though, and these actresses have a lot of talent!
Yes to all of this... except Bernardo was also a killer that night. He was also the first to kill, whereas Tony was avenging his friend's death. Personally, I'm against all of that violence, but you can't write off one character for violence over an equally guilty opponent.

I definitely agree. The trailers aren't showing ANYTHING. The high notes are all hit so perfectly in this. Literally my favorite song sung in the new one and it makes me cry every time I watch it because of how beautiful everything Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose are doing. They’re singing and acting both are so immaculate.
Rewatching this I barely understood that when Maria is singing about her love, the camera focuses on Anita weeping and let’s Maria’s voice be the vehicle through which we process Anita’s grief. Very powerful.
I was totally amazed on everything that was included in this version. Such as Rita Moreno singing "Somewhere", Maria carrying a suitcase as she is running towards Tony's demise. Anita at the morgue. "Offercer Krupke" sung in the police station. So many more inclusions. A Cinematic masterpiece. Tony Kushners brilliant screenplay.

I absolutely loved this number, it was so amazing, I have to say I prefer it over the original!! One thing that I always noticed about it from the original is Anita is basically, without knowing, saying Bernardo didn't love her because he killed Riff.
Very moving. I must admit that this version stirred my soul more. They do more operetta overlaps. The slap by Anita really set the tone. Rita's Anita was a hard act to follow. But this one satisfactorily followed it.

I agree, but Natalie and Rita were also held back by the movie standards of the time. If they had been given the freedom to go there dramatically, it would've been interesting to see what they could do. Also, without their own singing voices in this scene, it's doubly hard to give a cohesive dramatic performance.
Imagine coming home from seeing your dead boyfriend in the morgue and finding his killer in your best friend's bed at her consent. I feel so bad for Anita.

Thing is Bernardo killed Riff before he died. If he lived and Anita found out, how would she rationalize it? Would she even rationalize it at all? She says Tony cannot feel love or compassion since he's a killer. How would she go about saying the same thing about her own lover? Would she even say the same thing? Just a hypothetical.
But what I do like about this song though. In the original it seemed like Maria was preaching to Anita. But in this version Maria saying she already to far gone to back now.

Back in 1960 I memorized all the songs from the movie. Not many musicals now have singable songs.

I was totally amazed on everything that was included in this version. Such as Rita Moreno singing "Somewhere", Maria carrying a suitcase as she is running towards Tony's demise. Anita at the morgue. "Offercer Krupke" sung in the police station. So many more inclusions. A Cinematic masterpiece. Tony Kushners brilliant screenplay.
They were crying while singing live, that’s very impressive. When you’re crying, your throat is paralysed.

I absolutely loved this number, it was so amazing, I have to say I prefer it over the original!! One thing that I always noticed about it from the original is Anita is basically, without knowing, saying Bernardo didn't love her because he killed Riff.
Very moving. I must admit that this version stirred my soul more. They do more operetta overlaps. The slap by Anita really set the tone.
Rita's Anita was a hard act to follow. But this one satisfactorily followed it.

Ariana DeBose proves herself to be a true triple threat in this movie. But Rachael has improved vocally since she performed as Maria in her high school production. I saw her sing this song here on KRplus.
Both actresses should have Oscar noms. This was better than the original. Rachel was better than Natalie.
This year’s best lead actress race was pretty tight
I agree, but Natalie and Rita were also held back by the movie standards of the time. If they had been given the freedom to go there dramatically, it would've been interesting to see what they could do. Also, without their own singing voices in this scene, it's doubly hard to give a cohesive dramatic performance.

I know I’m probably wrong but I always saw this song as Anita projecting her feelings about herself onto Maria because she found out in this movie that Bernardo kill the rest so it’s like she’s talking to herself when she says a boy who kills cannot love
Oddly enough this song kind of made me think of the Queen Of The Night ballad from the Magic Flute, espically during the operatic opera parts
Thing is Bernardo killed Riff before he died. If he lived and Anita found out, how would she rationalize it? Would she even rationalize it at all? She says Tony cannot feel love or compassion since he's a killer. How would she go about saying the same thing about her own lover? Would she even say the same thing? Just a hypothetical.
That's why Maria says "you should know better". She's reminding Anita of the hypocrisy in that statement

But what I do like about this song though. In the original it seemed like Maria was preaching to Anita. But in this version Maria saying she already to far gone to back now.

I love this a lot, the performances sound GREAT my only critique is that in my opinion the beginning with Anita is done just the tiniest bit too fast

@@joewhitehead3 I looked around and found that the song was apparently out of Rita’s voice range? The song was too low for her. Rita understood that it had to be dubbed, but she just wished the emotion in the dub matched the way she acted the scene.
