  • Hey, guys! Today we are making DIY face masks. One option uses cotton pillowcase fabric as well as coffee filters. These are NOT a substitute for N-95 facemask, they only offer some protection. But some is better than none.

    I hope you don't find this weird, but I added an extra layer of protection by inserting a panty liner between the layers of fabric, so it's not directly touching my face. You just have to remember to remove it before laundering. Stay safe and healthy everyone.

      I used a ziplock bag. I cut it down the sides and cut the ziplock off.I placed inside before I folded it. It would be reusable after sanitizing. For the people out there who found that the hair ties would not stay on the back their ears take a shoelace and tie it on each hair tie and just tie it to the back of your head above your ears.

Hey lady, you need to explain the WHOLE folding process for us who aren't used to making our own Lifesaving Facemasks or whatever!😂😂😝 ROFL I pretty much just stay at home anyhow. We live in the country on A "retired" Cattle farm so we have plenty of room to be outside and won't go crazy from the self quarantine! My poor son works for USPS and I'm trying to remain calm and not FREAK out all over the place about him being exposed all over the place! He's extremely healthy and obsessive about being clean. (Aspbergers). So that helps😂, but I'm a Mom so I'm gonna worry, it's my job!😜

    Glad to see from comments that people are willing to wear masks. I live in South Korea and here, people look at you weird if you're not wearing a mask walking down the street..(Although everyone's face is covered with masks, I can feel their glaring eyes!)...I get the "You're not considerate of others" vibe. Please protect yourself and show that you care for others by this simple gesture of wearing a mask. You can do this, America!

      @@es5696 Me, too. I order ahead from Walmart as deliveries are delayed and come in partial orders. Today I got trash bags and shampoo, part of a much larger order. For pets, Walmart is good, too, or Chewy.com. Chewy is also bogged down with deliveries. That's why it pays to order much earlier than you need if you can. Other places also ship, so check around. Fresh stuff will not be delivered this way, but you can get dried fruit, which has the enzymes. Check other sites by googling "online groceries" and specific search terms.

I don’t own a sewing machine, nor even know how to use one if I did! 😁 Your simple instructions with everyday household items is incredibly helpful! I saw a video from a doctor that also recommends a paper towel sheet be placed in the middle of the pillowcase- as it acts as an additional filtering/barrier system and absorbs moisture. Throw the paper towel out after use, and launder your pillow case after each use. Thanks again! Ordering hair ties online is much easier to find than face masks! Stay healthy and safe! ❤️

    It's important to remember how to take off/put on a mask. When you take it off, DON'T touch the actual mask part. Touch only the straps. Then, you should wash it and wash your hands as soon as possible. If you touch the mask part, any particles in the mask might transfer to your hands, so please be careful when handling masks.

      Lots of grocery stores have parking lot pickup options. Depending on where you live there is a company that shops for you called “shipt” it’s a yearly fee instead of a few every shopping trip which I think is better.

    • @lonelybutterfly5988
      @lonelybutterfly5988 4 년 전 +2

      Thanks everyone for your suggestions. 😊 I live in Central Florida so we definitely have instacart & shipt which more than likely I'll end up using since I don't have my own transportation. I'm on limited income so I really didn't want to deal with extra fees through delivery services, but during these scary times I'll just have to deal with it until we can get back to somewhat normal times. ❤️👍

    I love your videos. This one was definitely helpful and I'm so gland that you're keeping it upbeat b/c honestly, this whole virus situation is just beyond real...I feel like I did when I was in college and 9/11 happened...just so hard to wrap my head around and I feel like I'm watching a horror movie that I just can't turn off.
    Sorry for the rant. I just needed to let it off my chest.

      @janebyrne6463 4 년 전

      Yes, but we're all in the same boat. We will get through this, don't ask me when. But one day it will be over (just like 09/11), and perhaps we can bronze our masks and gloves as mementos, just a thought.

    • @janebyrne6463
      @janebyrne6463 4 년 전

      @47 E.B.O That's what I'm hoping for too. That no one I care about will get sick or worse. And I'm well aware that thousands have died, and thousands more before we've either beaten back the virus or they come up with a vaccine (whichever comes first). But, if not for widespread social distancing, the death toll would be in the millions by now. We need to keep calm and carry on and take care of ourselves and our loved ones.

    Our top heath doctor says -
    You need to wash your hands before and after taking the mask on and off. Also they should only be warn for a very short period of time because once the fabric gets moist your actually increase your risk.

    The cotton one did nothing to help protect you from particles. There needs to be something to shape your nose so that particles cannot get into the mask. Out of the two options the coffee filter gives you better protection

    • @grecia7945
      @grecia7945 4 년 전 +7

      Wearing the mask is more to protect others. It prevents infected droplets (if you unknowingly had the virus) from when you breath/speak or sneeze/cough from falling onto surfaces and infecting others. The droplets are too heavy to be airborne so they aren’t necessarily going to be flying into your mask. I think both these masks are very useful. Better safe than sorry.

  • @Iheart2cook
    @Iheart2cook 4 년 전

    You can also use a bandanna or a cotton t-shirt. They are a little thinner than the pillowcase but you can breath a bit easier too. Thank you for sharing these options!

    The shaping at the nose is very important as in your coffee filter mask. I’ve seen people use pipe cleaners instead of paper clips. The pipe cleaner was sewn between the layers of fabric.
