I live in Canada and have the extreme pleasure of owning a Jindo. This is the first video about Jindos that REALLY knows what they are talking about. They are NOTHING like North American dogs. Training and bonding with my girl "Hiyan" has been the highlight of my life when it comes to dogs. So respectful, gentle to her family, loyal and obedient. She spends 99% of her time off leash now just following me around, happy to be with me leading and keeping her safe. I am going to find a way to get another Jindo again. My girl is 13 but still healthy as a horse and these dogs have good longevity, so another 5 years I am hoping at least.
Wow, that is fantastic. In addition to your girl being wonderful, it sounds like you have really put in the time and work to building a wonderful and respectful relationship with her so that she can be the dog she is. I do not have a Jindo as of now. I am in the beginning stages of doing my research, but the more I learn about them, the more I am realizing that one of these dogs would fit my lifestyle very well. Being someone who is not at all an impulsive decision maker, I don't see a Jindo in my life for at least two or three years. I would like to talk to a variety of Jindo owners, talk with breeders and really know what I'm in for before investing in one.

This is an excellent video! Exactly what I felt while I have my Korean Ji do dog.
I can not generalize the entire breed cause I've seen a lot of Jindos that are not quite fit to the characters of my Jindo.
But things I've discovered from my Jindo are :
1. Very smart. I didn't even train her, yet she could just glimpse at me and read my thoughts.
2. Very clean. She grooms herself like cats. She doesn't smell even though I give her wash 2 times annually.
3. Very instinctive. When I had her in a daycare for a trip, she was the only dog who could smell the smoke from the small fire. She barked as hard as she could, which she barely does, so that staff could look for it.
4. Very generous to kids and puppies. She's not kind when grown-ups try to grabble her, or adult dogs are not able to read the body signs. When those things happen, she tries to warn them by staring back with scary eyes, and if it doesn't work, she does air snaps. However, she tolerated a little grabs and pinch from a toddler and gently educated puppies that tried to go up on her back.
5. Very mature. She did have a faze of messing around at home, but only until she was 8 months or so. After around 1 year old, I suddenly felt like I had a senior dog at home. She barely plays or even moves, but then when we go for a run, she could run like a greyhound for 3 hrs.
6. Very loyal. She could come at 3 times bigger dogs than her to protect me. One time, we were in a playground, and a very large German Shepherd and his owner came in. The Shepherd came to me with his hackles raised, and my Jindo came in between me and the Shepard. Suddenly, the Shepherd tried to make a move towards me, and my Jindo, who weighs only 33 pounds, squared her legs in front of the Shepard without hesitation. They got into a fight, and she got a scratch on her ear, but the Shepard got puncture wounds on his neck.
I so freaking love my Jindo. She's just perfect, and I feel like her presence is more like human being than a dog.

I agree. Very informative video. I went from thinking they were a Japanese version of a German Shepherd to learning that they’re actually a Korean hunting dog along with facts about the breed.

As Korean, Jin-do dog is originated from Jin-do island which is located at the farest west-southern of Korean peninsula. Jin-do dog has very wonderful habits , amazing characters and beautiful features and has many good points in the view of owner. We are surely proud of Jin-do dog as the one of the best dogs in the World.
We spent two years in South Korea and adopted a Jindo/Malinois mix while we were there. He has been such a good dog. We definitely can see the Jindo influence in him.
Two jindos are my house. They had 8 puppies over 3 gestation period. All of them have a home. Love them

We have a German Shephard mix. We just recently learned about his Jindo blood. This explained so many things. Thank you. He is 50% GS, but is 100% in his Jindo behavior.

My old mentor and friend Mr Kim introduced me to the Jindo in Shaker hts ohio back im 1993. Extremely tough dog. In KoreaThey also used the Jindo for dogfighting

I've had 5 jindos so far (mom and dad who were brought from the namesake Jindo island, and their three kids) and while they are not the easiest breed to train, I cannot imagine getting a different breed other than jindos now that I am familiar with them. They are not only clean and smart but also fiercely loyal, protective, and loving to a fault at the same time.. best qualities to have in your pups.
It'd be awesome to have a couple of well-trained jindos as not just a part of the family but also as hunting companions... It'd be my dream really!! I've seen their amazing natural small-game hunting instincts first hand and it'd be great to tame that.
Sweetest and goodest doggos as long as you are ready to love them.
p.s. 4:40 the small deers with huge fangs are asian water deers, Gorani, endemic to the korean peninsula (not just Jindo island)and some parts of china. Amazingly effing unique creatures on their own lol

진돗개에대해 좀더 깊이 보면...
한국의 토종 견종들은 수천년간 환경에 맞게 자연 선택적으로 개량된 품종들입니다.
그래서 남쪽의 견종(진돗개 등)과 북쪽의 견종(풍산개 등)은 조금 다른 특징이 있죠.
한국의 남쪽은 60%의 산림과 40%의 농지로 구성되어 있었습니다. 마을은 한곳에 밀집되어 있었고, 거의 모든 성인은 낮시간 농업을 위해 마을을 벗어나야하는 상황이었습니다. 이런 상황에서 주변 가까운 산엔 호랑이, 곰, 늑대, 표범, 승냥이 등 맹수들이 가까이 살고 있었습니다. 즉, 마을에 남은 아이들과 노약자들은 그들이 키우는 개들에의해 보호받아야하는 환경이었죠.
이러한 이유로 맹수나 외부인이 마을에 침입했을 때 사람을 두고 도망치는 개체는 도태될수밖에 없었습니다. 또 마을의 어른이 없는 마을에 어린 아이에게 공격적인 개체도 도태될수밖에 없었죠.
진돗개는 이런 환경에서 수천년간
자연 개량된 견종입니다.
진돗개의 가장 큰 특징은,
1. in(가족) & out(타인)의 명확한
구분.(공간의 개념까지)
2. 가족 중 가장 약한 구성원을 우선 보호하려는 기질.(가정에서 어른이 어린 아이를 혼내는 경우, 진돗개가 아이를 보호하기 위해 어른을 물어버리는 경우는 매우 흔한 일입니다.)
따라서 현대 사회에서 진돗개를 키우실 경우 무조건 In(가족)의 범위를 넓혀야 합니다.
진돗개는 가족에겐 천사, 타인에게는 언제든 악마가 될수 있는 견종입니다. 또 두마리의 진돗개가 성체 멧돼지를 상처없이 사냥할수 있는 공격적인 견종이죠.
즉, 사회화가 이루어지지않은 진돗개는 여성이나 어린 아이가 통제할수 없습니다.
진돗개의 사회화 훈련은 간단합니다.
그저 강아지 시절부터 자주 산책을 다니며 다른 사람, 다른 개들과의 접촉을 늘리면 됩니다.
그러나 아무리 사회화가 잘된 진돗개라고해도 기본적으로 진돗개는 외부인에게 냉담합니다. 단지 공격하지 않을 뿐이죠.
진돗개는 스스로 가족이라고 인지하지 않는 사람이 주는 음식을 먹지않으며, 함께 산책도 하지 않습니다.
또 진돗개는 집에서 대소변을 보지 않으며, 집에서 멀리 떨어져야 대소변을 봅니다.
즉, 가족이 집을 비울 경우,
당신은 누군가를 고용해 당신의 진돗개를 돌보게할수 없습니다.
마지막으로 진돗개는 잘 짖지 않습니다. 특히 어린 가족이 있는 경우엔 아예 어떤 소리도 내지 않으려 노력하죠. 진돗개는 어린 아이가 놀라지 않게 소리, 거리 등을 매우 세심하게 행동합니다.
진돗개가 짖으면 반드시 그 이유가 있습니다. 그 이유가 사람에게 어떤 의미를 가지는지는 몰라도...
visited Jindo island and brought my jindo(black and tan) from the island, there are companies to help with prep and paper work to bring them back to the States.
I learned a lot, thank you for covering this less common breed! They sound similar to my Akita (but smaller and my Akita has no desire to please people as she mentioned LOL).

I have the following two questions though:
1) Given that this is a guard dog breed but weighs 50lbs at the maximum, how strong and agile are these dogs (comparable pound-for-pound to pitbulls?)?
2) Some double-coated breeds (e.g. Alabais and Kangals) can tolerate heat, others do not. Do Jindos tolerate heat?

A rough measurement of strength for a Korean Jindo is they can take on most animals about 3x their body weight. Ie, a 40lb Jindo can take on 120lbs. (*This doesn’t translate into the sport of weight pulling however, and Jindos are able to pull weights much higher than that)
2) Jindos tolerate heat surprisingly well. Its a bit of a “mystery” how a double coated northern breed ended up developing as it did considering the warm, humid climate of Jindo Island, but they tolerate heat fairly well. Mine are here with us in Atlanta, Georgia USA. My Jaegu female is less tolerant because of her longer/darker coat than my shorter coated Hwanggu, but they are not left outside in the heat all day and have access to air conditioning. They tolerate hikes in the heat as long as they have access to fresh water and protection on their feet if the pavement is excessively hot to the touch.

1) Regarding strength, I am not concerned with weight pulling or any other such sports. I am interested in whether this breed can perform one of its most important functions: guarding and protecting its owners.
While the ability to bring down adversaries 3x their weight is extremely impressive, most tough criminals are much heavier than 120 lbs and/or have combat experience. Pitbulls, for example, provided they are trained to guard and protect (something that is not part of their DNA; on the contrary), are only dangerous to big, tough criminals because they are very fast and agile (they jump directly to the throat or attack the genitals of their opponents).
2) Regarding the tolerance of heat of double-coated breeds, this is an important advantage of the Jindo (at least for me)! Also, it is a mystery to me why some double-coated breeds tolerate almost all types of weather (e.g. Alabai, Kangal, Jindo) while others would collapse if they did any activities in hot climates (or so people say on the internet).
@@JohnSmith-qy3nv Gotcha. A Jindo will primarily be a great deterrent (primitive phenotype, deep bark, many will likely not back down even sans-protection/IGP training), and it’s expected they will bite if their owner is physically assaulted. But their medium size and bite style isn’t going to hold down a criminal with one dog alone. They aren’t a “full grip” type of breed which uses their entire mouth to grip and hold on like you might see in a breed like Malinois. They are much more “bite and release and repeat”, but a Jindo should do enough damage to buy you time. (Speaking as someone who got involved in the breed primarily because I was looking for a spitz breed with guarding instincts)

Almost everything you said is correct, except that the Jindo will never be totally obedient to their owners, where “they will put their owners wishes above their own” (around 9:20). At least the one I had for a decade ABSOLUTELY will and did do that, with absolute love, respect and devotion. She was rescued from S. Korea. Also, we gave her direction, love, activity and a pack order from when she was 8 weeks old.

Fits my dog to a T. DNA test said she’s a Jindo, we adopted her from the SPCA. She was in bad shape. She’s very quiet and anxious, very good dog, well behaved, but she doesn’t like to play or interact with active outside my husband and me.

I think so, especially if they grew up together but you should talk with a breed expert before making that move.

Thank you for the information! Sounds like it's not an apartment dog at all and as with all dogs, should stay on a leash.
You could easily have a Jindo in an apartment, super chill, if left to their own they may find ways to entertain themselves. super clean other than some hair you would need to collect.
Definitely a dog to keep on a leash or long line especially if you don’t have great recall on your dog. Have a innate sense for chase. Constantly will look to expand their territory but have a great sense of direction and will find their way home. Some are more lucky than others.
As will most dogs early recall training and socializing if a key for a well mannered dog.

I lived with my Jindo (plus a beagle/whippet mix) in an apartment for a year and she did just fine. That said - I would take them on frequent walks/hikes/ runs so they got plenty of exercise. She was always quiet in the apartment.

To my knowledge, there isn’t too much interest among breed enthusiasts in moving Jindos into full recognition with the AKC anyway.
I have 2 rescue Korean Village dogs. While not technically Jindos, the video description matches really well. Amazing dogs, although they are completely unsocialized due to their unfortunate beginnings.
I was raised alongside a Jindo. Both my father and uncle had a deep appreciation for these dogs. Many Koreans, particularly the older generation, take immense pride in this breed and see it as a privilege to have one. While I understand their sentiment, it wasn't quite for me. Jindos can be rather reserved. They are very aloof and aren't affectionate at all. Personally, I much preferred my beagle.
