My interpretation: This music video is about the changes that you go through as you go grow up. The clowns represent childish things like your imagination, creativity, childishness etc. The men in suits represent things you have to accept as an adult. Such as responsibility, work, seriousness etc. And as you're growing up, these things conflict with each other, and eventually there is only one left. This video is also extremely sad, one of the saddest I've seen. The clown is personified as losing his best and only friend because the friend is growing up and leaving the clown. Hence the clown is singing the lyrics "Where did you go". That's the story of the music video, not the lyrics.

Brian Nickles played the robber fighting it out with Steve Graham. I am very sad to say that both of these two great blokes are no longer with us.
Brian was always hilarious and used to have me in fits of laughter. He tried to get me to go into a McDonalds with a half full whisky bottle in this outfit and start screaming that I was Johnald McDonald. Ronalds brother and Ronald had stolen my idea and had me committed to an asylum....

His favorite song was always When The Sun Goes Down and he would have me play that song on repeat when he was about 6 or 7. (I always turned the volume down when he dropped the F bomb). Fast forward to 2022.. My son is almost 16 and is finally discovering their whole catalog of music. He's learning them all on guitar and it sounds so amazing. Visited my high school at 3am this morning and listened to this song. The spontaneous crying by the riverside behind my school really caught me by surprise. It is genius. The clowns are the early years of someones life that come in conflict with the older years(suited men) that are more mature and unfun. In the end the immaturity wins(clowns) saying to the suited man 'how did it come to this' and shows photos where they loved each other back in time

I've been looking for this video...for years. YEARS. Someone sent it to me so long ago (actually in 07 I think!) and all I could remember was 'clowns beating up homeless people' (they were homeless in my memory for some reason) -- try putting that into Google. Never was able to find it. And now just out of random CHANCE I find it. I only started listening to Arctic Monkeys about a year ago? Listened to almost every song but this one. Wow.
