The person came up with the character designs for the little creatures and robots REALLY understands 90's anime (presumabley the same person as the animator themselves)
But animation is not good. Maybe they didn't have the budget? Her facial expressions were stiff and her lip movements felt off. The style is great though, but I wish they had made it better.

Go look up clips of the original Sailor Moon or Speed Racer, and you will see the similarities.

Props to the animator (or animators) on really getting the 80s 90s mahou shoujo look. The framerate, the natural look of the linework like hand drawn cels...so often when people try to emulate older styles theres too much evidence of modern components it doesnt work, but this.... Really gets it⭐

The animation really helps with the filter and asthetic, Dua Lipa is an Iconic Girl in here and she looks beautiful! The imagery reminds me of sailor moon! I feel like an anime movie being based off of this movie would defeat the purpose of Interstella 5555
Honestly the looped animation and sometimes simplistic moves they chose for the dances really makes it more authentic and appears more as an 80s anime than if they were to have gone all out on the animation. I totally love the vibe they got with this, and it makes for such a memorable video and song!
The looped animations really get you back to the time when animation was beautifully hand drawn, but for the animators was very hard, time consuming and tiring. So they reused bits and pieces of animations every now and then in order to save time and optimize work loads.
These details really help to give that retro feeling they were looking for.
Eh I wished they went with more frames for smoother animation. Because believe it or not 80's anime did have amazing animation even in the 80's. Nausicaa, My Neighbor Totoro, Akira, Wicked City, etc... All in the 80's and had smooth and gorgeous animation.
It fits Dua's irl dance move pretty well too!
@@conyo985 That's what I was thinking too. The aesthetic art style is spot on, but it felt off with the stiff looped movements. All the 80's anime I've seen have very fluid movements. I still love the music video just could have been better.

The animation, transitions, outfits and expressions are all beautiful. I think they took inspiration from Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Pichi Pichi Pitch, and I love it all.

Ugh I am in LOVE with this animation style. Whoever decided to even make an animated music video in the first place and then have it mimic 80s anime deserves praise. It looks so good and perfectly choppy. Creamy Mami, Kimagure Orange Road, California Crisis, City Hunter, anything with that City Pop aesthetic, and of course Sailor Moon - it all looks so good!!

Just noticed that this is produced in a 4:3 aspect ratio, rather than the more common 16:9 of today's widescreen. Subtle touches like that really amp up the retro authenticity factor they're going for.

@@acanthusred3123 well, you're not wrong wrong. There is plenty of content still uploaded in 4:3, and the difference is apparent on its face. I suppose the "subtle" part on my end was just realizing that it was probably an intentional artistic decision, rather than just taking it in stride. This thing oozes that kind of authenticity, though, like the myriad aesthetic touches that so well mimic '90s-era anime. I later noticed that she has some other animated music vids for this album up. I'm not sure if that's because on-site filming was limited due to the pandemic, or if there was another marketing rationale, but they clearly had a well-considered motif permeating these works.
