- Whole areas washed away by the floods, entire villages wiped out, houses destroyed. More than 160 people have died. Despite excellent infrastructure and sound disaster relief, the effects of extreme weather on Germany are devastating.
On the night of 15 July, storms destroyed whole swaths of land in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. Shortly afterwards, heavy rain ravaged Bavaria and wreaked havoc in the Netherlands, Austria, and Belgium. Only in the days that followed did the full extent of the catastrophe become apparent.
Now, people are returning to their homes, or what’s left of them. They are overwhelmed by their own helplessness and by the force and speed with which entire livelihoods have been wiped out. Now, the big cleanup begins-which will take years. How are people in the affected regions coping?

BUT THEN I HEARD MERKEL SAY "THE PEOPLE ARE ALL WORKING TOGETHER and that's great" and I realized, oh, that's the OPPOSITE OF MY LIFE.
Even my best friends helped then-Mayor Giuliani JAIL AND TORTURE ME, for instance. It's incomprehensible. Even my own editors at the newspapers I wrote for would not permit me to tell anyone about the RAIDS ON MY APARTMENTS by AMerikkkan Gestapo for political cartoons i drew!
47 times they've jailed me for speech in Amerikkka. (ex: I got two years jail just for mocking a former friend's hairdo in a mass email! The Judge said that was NOT FREE SPEECH!!! The Appeals Court said that judge was a psycho and so he was promoted as usual.)
And even the ACLU and 100% of free speech lovers have turned their back on me all 47 times. Even 100% of my best friends, bandmates etc. (I was even jailed 6 days for playing uke!) I've been jailed on FICTIONAL charges like ATTEMPTED contempt of court and ATTEMPTED harassment of City Hall...and not one earthling will help me! "MY" attys are even dirtier than the dirty police and prosecutors and judges and journalists are!
AT LEAST IN ALL THESE OTHER DISASTERS, the govt and the press CARE ABOUT YOU.
But if you're just another civilian being beaten or robbed or jailed falsely by police, no one cares. (Unless it goes viral.)

It's almost not real, but it really is. I cannot imagine how your life can change so badly within minutes. My heart is with these poor people.
Could be worse: they could be in MURICA, where the govt makes us homeless then arrests us for being homeless!

In Murica, there are over 10 MASS SHOOTINGS PER DAY...but the govt and the MSM don't report 99% of them!

I had tried that.
Horrible feeling, loosing everything you own to a fire in a few minutes. You become homeless in only a few minutes.
The guilty was a company which did a roof maintenance job that involved tar on the roof top..
One of the workers, though he was smart. He prepared the entire roof top for the final step in the construction of the partially new roof top.
The building materials are tar and top-roof-cardboard, which has to be melted together.
Now he had a 25 meters by 40 meters of highly flammable material to melt together using a gas burner like the one used to burn weed. What could possibly go wrong?
Just like 3 nearby and identical building where the fire was successfully extinguished, because the surface area they worked on was small, he successfully ignited a fire on our roof-top too. Half of the building got destroyed by water.
A firefighter told me that there was a 20 cm deep stream at the top-most floor. He told me they needed to soak the roof and the entire roof top in water to extinguish the fire.
The builder used an employee with no training, and no experience - it could basically be a random guy from the street - so it wasn't his fault, but the owner of company's fault.

Prayers to all the people of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This video is heartbreaking. I'm South African and lived in the NRW region for a year from 2015-2016 to study. All the university staff and students were wonderful. I had such a fantastic time living in Germany and it hurts to even watch this video. Sending all my best. I wish I could help with cleaning efforts.

From Vietnam, my condolences go out to the victims of the flooding. I used to live in central province of Vietnam where flooding occurs every year, but it does not have a disaster at this devastating lost level. I can feel how much pain that people in the affected regions in Germany, Belgium, and other regions on Earth have been gone through.
Utterly tragic. We were stationed in Darmstadt in 1965-1967. So sad for these hardworking people.

Kathleen McCormick...Now that this generation of Germans has experienced a major disaster for the first time, it is hoped that they will join in mass the anti war movement. Put the resources into research on how to tackle and prevent increasing weather disasters world wide.

This reminds of Katrina and what the New Orleans residents went through.
That was much worse.
This is what happens when you build towns and cities in a low lying areas with river running through it, or near it. One day, these kinds of things will happen.
From New Orleans here. Was 10 years old when Katrina hit. This reminds me more of the Baton Rouge Great Floods of 2016.
It’s all relative with population differences and densities. I mean this is pretty ugly.

@@amberlight5830 It's weird, usually we get a lot of flood incidences every year. Landslides, flash floods and strong winds are common during typhoon season. So far the weather has been stranger than usual, 2 weeks of constant rain but in sporadic bursts. Strong rain, sun, strong rain, sun, it cycles every hour. Usually we get nonstop rain/drizzle for 1-4 days. Then hot sun for a week or two before another typhoon hits.

Goodness! Folks must be moved to higher grounds. No more living near rivers again. Time and time again, this past two decades, its been crazy for folks living near the water.
💔 this is devastating I had no idea the scale of the catastrophe until seeing this, there is no word for this other than natural disaster and seeing people having to throw their worldly possessions away. The point that really brought it home was when the woman that looked like my nan was talking about considering weeding just before. But really is inspiring to see Humans pulling together in such an unpredictable disaster and all of the people that are helping are amazing.
My heart goes out to the citizens. This is heart-breaking. I can't even imagine the emotions they are feeling.

I am from Kerala, India. We faced something like this in 2018. Our ground floors were covered with mud post the flood. They called it flood of the century. Many people lost their lives. It took a couple of years but we recovered. All the very best to Germany, Italy, Mexico, China and Maharashtra in India who are currently facing floods. Wish you all a speedy recovery.
