I went back and told them about the oars that came with it being too short. They agreed with me and said they would only be useful in very still water. A 9' raft is hard to row with 2 people in it. It's not pointed at the front like a boat.

It was too far and I was worried about sharks. I had to yell at him and tell him that if he jumped out I wouldn't take him to the boardwalk to play games that night. That sounds silly but I wanted him to calm down and focus on something else beside the fact that we were drifting away while we waited for the rescue. My eyes get tears thinking about that day. I hated myself for taking that raft out.
My son grew up and rescued a 6 year old that they found on the bottom of a lake. He had just taken a class that week on CPR. The boy had been missing for 15 minutes when a girl stepped on him. They flew him by copter to a hospital and put him in a coma 'to save his brain.' He seems fine now. His parents named their 2nd child after my son. I have photos of him getting 3 awards at 20 years old. My son was sent home from The Navy because his heart couldn't take the stress of Bootcamp. He has a concave in his sternum (breastbone) that won't allow that kind of excercise. He could have passed out on that hot day in July at a desert lake doing CPR and he knew it.

I barely made it back.

Even if you aren't alone drowning can happen. What I fear is that if she had someone with her we would have had 2 drownings. If they saw her go under and tried to go in after her (which that would be 1st instinct because calling for help the help wouldn't get there fast enough to save her) and possibly drown as well. A girl from my town went for a ride with her friends about 4 total in the car and they had a accident flipped over into a creek. When the 3 others got to the side they noticed the driver wasn't out so they went in after her. They couldn't untangle her from the seatbelt and one of them almost drown with her. She felt safe on this lake she grew up around there.

I’ve been to that lake many times and had no issues myself. It’s a tragic incident but that lake is for waterskiing, tubing, etc. It should not be prohibited because that is literally its purpose. They should just change the rules about life jackets and make it mandatory for adults to wear them if they’re gonna do anything. People drown everywhere so are you gonna ban everybody from swimming anywhere ever again?

I was there when a man drowned at the lake around 2009 and guess what he wasn’t wearing a life jacket. It’s not the lake thats the problem. It’s the poor judgement that people make when swimming in a big lake like that.

@@BenLikesLemons Not really. Its not crystal clear but there is not much to get caught on in most of the lak. Some parts of the lake have plants near the shore. Its really surprising to me that anyone drowns there. She should have had another adult on board though. I rarely see people solo there. Likely a series of poor judgement calls that led to her death

The evidence is that he then went to sleep. I don't think any life form could sleep if they were cognisant of what had just happened.
Nonetheless, I fear as he ages his memories may torment him.

I once almost drwoned becauae i swam far from ma boat and i realised late that we botch were getting a bigger distance. I'm so lucky that there wasn't a crazy weather and that the water i was swimming in was a calm one. I thought this too but changed my mind after reading extensively about it. Here is what I put together from it all (the best resource being the main diver from the sheriffs department who knows that lake very well.)
He said there are no currents or whirlpools in that lake but the winds can get strong. The pontoon boats are pretty light and probably got blown away from where they were swimming.
People with a lot of muscle like Naya have a hard time floating and they sink easily. He said it’s easy to get tired trying to catch up to the boat. And that often the person can get to it but don’t have the strength to climb back aboard.

@ForDaZS I've been hearing that but I think regardless of whether or not he could've been fine in the water, she didn't want to climb onto the boat (if she could) and leave her kid out there. Making sure he was 100% out of harm's way first was her biggest concern. And it could've been one of the those things where her adrenaline was so high to save Josey, but after she got him there safely her arms and body absolutely gave out from exhaustion and she couldn't even paddle/cling to the boat anymore. But I realize none of us were there, so it's all speculation

Nomico see your point dies make sense but she didn’t have enough energy left to get herself back in the boat which means her body would have given up on her which caused her to drown🥺

@@Nopantsudansu I saw some people on Twitter who are familiar with the lake said something about the lake having strong undercurrent that isn't visible from the surface. She probably thought it'd be easier to not wear her lifejacket to hold her son close but exhaustion by swimming is real. Especially with the undercurrent pulling her down

That was shocking to me as well. I don't swim. I know in rivers and the ocean you have to be worried about strong currents. But I've never heard that was something to worry about in lakes.

There aren't currents in pools. The officer dude said there are bad currents at the time of her disappearence. It's likely she was already tired from fighting the current to save her son and then they hit an even worse spot.

She was probably too tired swimming to get her son on the drifting boat.. and just lost all energy to stay afloat. I think once you swim so far + push someone onto a boat + exhale all of your breath + go under its game over as you don’t have any air in your lungs to stay afloat.. nor have the energy for a few kicks to get that gulp of air. Just a number of unfortunate events probably

Thank you to everybody who’s clarified! If this was an Aussie who died, wed have our local news describing it as “drowning BY GETTING CAUGHT IN A CURRENT”. Because drowning is way too broad. Like I thought she got hit on the head or was pushed by force. What a horrific and tragic disaster. Poor Naya, and her poor son. Bless Naya for saving her son.

People assume they’re better swimmers than they are. Treading water where you can’t touch ground PLUS a strong current is extremely exhausting if you’re not trained well. A very common mistake unfortunately

@TraviTrail I was wondering about this. I know when I get tired I just make myself float for a few min, totally relaxing my muscles then go on again. Plus, she must have felt she is not going to make it much longer, her son had a life jacket on, why not tell him to hold onto the boat and get herself in and as soon as she had the strength again to pull him in. I think about this and it makes me so sad that it ended this way. 😢

The lake is known for whirlpools, she probably got caught up in it while helping her son on the boat and she couldn't fight the current so she just let herself go.

the current was too hard for her to pull herself up. she used all of her last strength while grabbing onto the boat and the current just pulled her away and because the boat was in anchored she could just grab on.

Exactly they just don’t want to finalize it as suicide. There wasn’t no signs of struggle at all. I just don’t see how this went and the sad part it we will never know and her son is so young that he will never fully understand either

I was thinking the same thing. If she was that close, Why would she just sink under the water? Why wouldn't she just grab the boat? If she put him up there, she was practically on top of it. Something's not right here.

A lake is very hard to swim in. As like the sheriff said, there were strong currents in the lake at the time of the accident. Those currents are probably known to drag people under the water which it is unfortunately hard to go back up.

@@stereoreviewx Yeah if that's the case then the family may have a lawsuit in order...I mean if she was exhausted trying to get she and her son back to the boat, she musters the strength to push him on board but nothing left to and nothing to grab onto to keep herself from slipping under...jeesh that's just horrible.

There are many people who don't have wonderful mother's, but rather, mother's who have abandoned, neglected and abused them.

He was probably in shock at first and when you're in shock, you don't always think clearly. He probably remembered more details after the initial shock.

It seems to me like the police were intentionally not revealing all of the son’s account until they found her body. They were vague and that was the source of a lot of the theories and distrust.

I feel like even if he watched her drown he's too young to realize that she wasn't safe and even if he did I don't think there's anything he could've done. God help him get through this

Lake's are like swimming pools, the waters are heavy, and cold leg cramps follow, making it hard to swim,and keep afloat. The results are drowning.

@@josemeza7128 Not like a swimming pool at all. Lakes have undercurrents that you can't see under the water. She was already tired from swimming and getting her little one back on the boat so she probably didn't have enough energy left to swim out of the undercurrents.

Kwality Kontrol they cant say without a doubt the anchor not being used is the DEFINITE cause of death. like i already said the only person who knows what happened is her son and he’s too young to fully comprehend everything he saw. all he said was that mommy put him on the boat and when he turned around she went under the water. so she was already at the boat but for whatever unknown reason was not able to get on it.

My dad died when I was 4 years old and I remember the moment finding out and that night so vividly. So sad that he was there when it happened.

i hope he gets therapy asap, if he doesn't he might grow up and feel guilty or something, i pay this boy will be ok

People with life vests have actually died there too. There have been several deaths so we don’t really know if it would have made a difference. I would like to think it would but considering others have had it on and still died there we will never know

My mom died when I was 4 years, and I can close my eyes and still remember her on the ambulance stretcher being taken away down the stairs like it was yesterday. The sounds of the siren wailing as it rushed down the street and the worry in my little body still haunt me- a source of the really bad anxiety I currently deal with to this day. I pray for her son that he does not have to relive this moment of his last moments with her in his head constantly.
