An easy way to install electrical back boxes in plasterboard - SPLATEZ

๊ณต์œ
์†Œ์Šค ์ฝ”๋“œ
  • ๊ฒŒ์‹œ์ผ 2021. 10. 14.
  • Here's a new product from Sockitz inventor Richard Brooke. The Splatez is a cover for electrical back boxes. Fitted during first fix wiring to prevent plaster entering the box. The other nifty function is the 4 tabs on the front surface. These can be used to mark the cutout location when using plasterboard in dot and dab or stud partition walls.

Actually, this marking method can work fine with different cut out methods.
Using spiral cutters and oscillating tools, afterwards, on steel boxes, isn't the best idea. Wears out or breaks the cutting blade.

โ€‹@@23Markthespark Nothing wrong with using steel boxes on new work. Some places insist on it. Some applications that have something with weight attached, it's the proper method. And when the location ends up between studs, it's the proper way to do it.

      @Candisa 2 ๋…„ ์ „

Same in Belgium, but if for some reason a plug decides to fit a bit too tightly in the socket, or simply after years of plugging and unplugging things, the little tabs holding the backbox in dig their way through the backing of the plasterboard. Also a lot (most) of times it is virtually impossible to undo the screws holding the tabs of the backboxes in place far enough for them to retract without them coming completely undone and lost in the wall, rendering the backbox unreusable.
The british "dry lining back box" (google that) seems to be a lot better than our European plasterboard backboxes: you have to cut a square hole (which isn't that much slower than carefully drilling a 68mm round hole), but you don't have to turn 2 screws a dozen turns for it to hold in place, they can easily be removed and reused, and they have much wider tabs holding them in place reducing stress from unplugging on the plasterboard. I wish this system finds its way to EU.

Looking at the box at the start its flush with the studs, in this case would be boarded right over. However, in the final shot, the box is almost flush with the front of the plasterboard, then in this case the box would never be boarded over.
Good idea and can see it working on a job that you were running yourself.
Same goes for those bead master plates, but he just insists if you dont use them then youโ€™re a numpty

In theory these are a great idea, but in practice, if you have two sockets on one of these, come second fix its easy to loosen one socket as you tighten the adjacent one; for that reason I still prefer to use wood.

    Easy? Looks like complicated.
    EU style:
    1. Run wiring
    2. Set plasterboard
    3. Cut out 68mm holes with a crown drill bit.
    4. Pull out wires and install a circular socket boxes.
    Done!

I'll stick to the easier method of cutting out with a multi tool and using either a single or double backbox with a plasterboard fixing. Screwfix part no. 36960 if anyone is interested. His method is more expensive and takes longer.

As a 30 year electrician, that is definitely not the easiest or cheapest way of doing this. Buy whatever gang box you need, and screw it to the stud. Donโ€™t need additional backing if the box is one piece and use a roto zip to cut out the drywall.
That was just painful to watch!!
