Since all of the Riley's emotions are in touch with her, Sadness knew from the get-go how to address Riley's feelings after the family moved from Minnesota to SF. Only when Joy realized that she might be stuck in the Memory Dump forever and that one of Riley's Core Memories of happiness stemmed from an event of sadness in which her parents helped Riley through it did she understand Sadness' role

The past doesn't define the present. The present defines the past. It's impossible for Riley to move forward if she doesn't acknowledge that she has been hurt, has suffered a loss, so she can then chart out a way forward.
Fear keeps her safe, but it doesn't solve anything. Disgust keeps her comfortable, but she needs to embrace uncertainty. She's not strong enough to use Anger to solve her problems. And having Joy about things that aren't actually there is just lying to herself.
No wonder she became depressed. If she doesn't use sadness having those emotions were just a waste of time.

Anger, Disgust, and Fear being unable to free the panel from the darkness consuming it shows how depression consumes you completely, before proceeding to immobilize you.

Another detail you can see (but you have to be very observant about it) is Riley’s eyes turning more and more gray the closer she gets to boarding the bus leaving for Minnesota. Once Riley sat down in her seat with her eyes being completely gray, losing those beautiful blue sparks that were there before, that’s when both the audience AND the emotions realize depression had taken full control over the console.
The “sky” inside Riley’s mind also starts to turn more and more gray after the collapse of Honestly Island forces her to lose her train of thought, but that’s a more obvious detail you notice throughout the final act of the movie.

One thing nobody ever mentions: sadness is the only one that can take the running away idea from Riley's head is because her secondary feeling is regret. You only give up on things you regret.

  • @intreoo
    @intreoo 2 년 전 +825

Sadness taking control of Riley's future is so incredibly powerful. All of this started because Riley felt sad about how she left her life behind in Minnesota, but all the other emotions, particularly Joy, did everything they could except accepting their sadness. They tried to run, avoid, and fill it with other emotions, but every single one of them failed. It cured because Sadness came and gave Riley the most powerful cure, to accept and move on. Being sad is not being weak, being sad is accepting things for how they are. Running from sadness in pursuit of happiness and other emotions may sound like the right solution, but that is just that, running; sadness will never go away unless you truly accept the magnitude of it and what is happening in your life. Joy's antic is comparable to a dam. Holding back the water that just keeps coming and is unavoidable, which is Riley's sadness, behind a dam of Joy, will only pile things up. Sadness gave Riley and Joy the greatest gift of all, acceptance. She released the dam that clogged Riley's life. So powerful.

I’m my opinion it’s about growing up. About learning to let go of a part of your life, a younger part. Nostalgia is a huge part of that, and I think that’s what it’s about. That’s what sadness is doing to Riley. Those memories, are no longer happy because she has to acknowledge she’s letting them go. Sure your letting go of a part of life that seemed so full of hope, so purely happy. With little responsibility and the entire world ahead of you. But in return your gaining a whole new part of life opened to you. It took me a long time to get over that fact myself, and seeing this movie at the time really made me feel better.

We all wanted to be happy but I guess the message of this film is that we shouldn't ignore our sadness to some things because it's our way to seek help. Nah, we are NEVER defined by any of our emotions or feelings, positive or negative. They're simply chemical reactions inside our brains that come and go as the winds, and are highly erratic and unpredictable.
And ALL emotions are equally important, not just joy, and they only exist to help us survive and experience life. Don't be foolish and attach your identity onto them.
One has only grown up when one realizes happiness isn't really that big of a deal, and there is so much more to life than feeling good all the time.

The whole conflict between Joy and Sadness is a lot deeper than you think. It's not just an argument between friends, it's a representation of people hiding their sadness and pain.
We sometimes become so worried about burdening other people with our problems, that we're willing to hold our troubles in, thinking that it's helping us, when really it's hurting us.
Joy was so determined to make Riley happy again, that she failed to realize that she was hurting her in the process.
It wasn't until Joy realized her mistake, and let Sadness take control, that Riley could finally heal from her pain.
We can't heal from our troubles if we don't confront them, and that's something the emotions had to figure out.

Not everything is joyful for them. They don't get to choose where to live. They have only so much anger they can handle. And need fear to get them to face reality. And disgust is just a normal feeling of things they don't like. I don't know if it won an Academy Award, but it should have gotten some recognition.

@@winxwarrior9240 You must be thinking of the Little Mermaid because Cinderella doesn’t change herself at all. Cinderella is about how true beauty is inside, kindness will be rewarded but most of all, that you don’t have to be a superhero to survive hard things. It’s awesome that there are movies with warrior Princesses but we need more movies about emotional maturity. Cinderella is a great example of remaining true to your own morals despite others mistreating you. Our society views kindness as a bad thing. Cinderella was in an abusive situation where she had no way out and it would have been very easy to become discouraged and become bitter or hopeless. Cinderella remained strong despite the harsh mistreatment she received. She stood up for herself and others during the movie even if that looked different than, say, Mulan. When she saw an opportunity to get out, she took it. Cinderella was written right after WWII. People needed a hero that reminded them to stay strong and to remain kind, even to those that it would be easy to hate.
I have experienced emotional abuse for years with no way out. Although it took me years to figure out, my natural inclinations towards joy and kindness weren’t something that were bad and in fact what made me strong. It’s very easy to become bitter when people hurt you but choosing to still love is the better choice and Cinderella is a good reflection of that. Many people love me now for the qualities some people tried to crush
(That is not to say that you don’t have to put up emotional barriers, endure abuse, or that you shouldn’t cut certain people out of your life)

I love how the memory that joy and sadness created together looks messy. It's not a perfect half and half look, it's just mushed. And I think it suits the situation. Because all things leading up to that moment *was* messy. Since she's grieving the loss of her old home, it makes sense for her to break down and then be built back up again once she accepted her emotions.

Nostalgia is a cruel lie. It makes you pine for a past you never had. It makes you forget what you've accomplished, forget the pain in your past, and imagine a life you did not truly experience, only to taunt you with its inaccessibility. Do not believe the lie it tells you. Do not forget the pain in your past, lest you resent your present, and fear the future. Nostalgia will steal your joy if you let it. Remember the past fondly, but remember also that the past was not perfect, and pain has always been constant, no matter what the cruel mechanisms of your mind might say. Reject the unconscious opium of Nostalgia, it promises only the remembrance of a more perfect past, in exchange for your satisfaction with the present and future.

I've never watched this movie, as crazy as it may seem, and I never thought I would need to. But watching this scene, this moment, these emotions, it made me realize how similar it is to me. I've moved 7 times in my life, and as a little kid, you don't have the understanding to know whats going on or what to feel. But... on the last two moves, it was tough. Has been tough. We moved to Colorado from Georgia, and I was going into 8th grade, and for a while, life was fine. I made friends, I did well in school, and so on. Then, the new year rolled around and covid hit, and my dad was sent on a deployment to africa for 8 months. Me and my mom were... it wasn't good. We made it through summer fine but when 9th grade began, it fell apart. I felt alone with no good friends, I didn't care about my grades, sports seemed to only make me sadder, and my mom's boss was a prolific a$$hole. She would come home and would see my grades, and get angry and frustrated, and I would cry and curl up into myself. Once my dad came back, we knew we had to move back to Georgia. So in 2021, we did; we moved back and we thought it would be fixed instantly, but it wasn't. I had lost my vigor for school, and its been a long path to back into it. Not to mention, My parents fight more often than they ever have. They always make up and go to bed with the issue solved, but it's hard to see them like that. Yelling and screaming, saying the other doesn't care or understand. I know I've written enough for a KRplus comment, but I hope this helps somebody to realize that we all struggle, and that I will get better, if you TRY.

From the perspective of someone who lives with depression, this film truly expresses the importance of emotions. Most importantly Sadness and Joy. There are those who show joy but inside feel sadness/emptiness.
The message for those who have this condition is that it’s okay to have moments of sadness, feeling the sense of defeat, pressure and the difficulty of life. It’s what makes us human.
The most crucial step is to ask for help; by crying or talking.
Cry is a form of communication sending signals to others as a call for help.
The ones who come around are there to give you hand.
    Remember you always matter🔆

What I've noticed is that although other emotions have hair/attire of the same colour they are represented with, Joy has got blue hair instead of yellow. This can be a reference to the fact that one can understand Joy in the presence of Sadness. A life full of Joy but no Sadness is a life as dead as a dodo. The very cycle of life continues because of the presence of both Sadness and Joy. Some of us may have spent hours or days or months not feeling happy, but the opposite has never happened. Therefore, in order to feel Joy, Sadness too must be present.
And maybe this is what Pixar hinted by Joy's blue hair - the blue which actually denotes melancholy - that in the end Sadness will have to be there to save Riley.

Sadness is the perfect character to help anyone, even when she helps Riley get through the changes after moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. To my opinion, Riley has gone through the location grief, first after she move she experienced Denial, but a little bit before Sadness touch her memories of Minnesota during her time and at class. Next when Joy and Sadness were out, she experienced anger thanks to Anger, which might've caused some personality islands to fall. Then in a stage of bargaining, Anger inserts an idea that tells her to run away out of San Francisco back to Minnesota which causes 2 more islands to fall, but thanks to Sadness who remove the idea after she and Joy got back to HQ, the idea was remove that prompt Riley to return back to her parents. With Sadness showing the sad core memories of her life in Minnesota, Riley now has a stage of depression and confess to her parents about missing her life in Minnesota. But to her surprise, her parents too also miss their life in Minnesota as well. With them consoling Riley and with Joy by Sadness side, Riley finally accepts her new life in San Francisco, ending her grief stage thanks to Sadness.
