McElroy is possibly suffering from CTE if he believes OU was "resurected" by Lincoln Riley. The Sooners had won Eight Big 12 titles and a NC in 15 years under Bob Stoops before Lincoln got there. Not exactly struggling.

He’s the freaking AD OF TEXAS. He can demand the best and get the best. There’s no reason to gamble on hero hires like Charlie Strong. Or gamble on a guy like Tom Herman who has never coached at that level. You need a guy who has been there and knows what he needs to do and how to do it. Most AD’s are not competent enough to understand this and got their job after working their way up as a player or academic. Very few are hungry business men. So youve gotta get a solid AD first.

Sark was a good coach at UW and USC, but not great. Not sure if he is the coach that will put Texas in top 10 year in and year out...My question is why didn’t Texas go through a complete hiring process to get the best candidate? Matt Campbell? Luke Fickle? Chris Peterson? David Shaw? Billy Napier? All coaches have some question marks but it seems like the decision was made without much research... Desmond Howard did mention that behind close doors, Sark was their third choice...

Context. He took a Washington team that was 0-12 the year before he got there up to 9 wins. He was hired away by USC to coach a team that was under sanctions from the NCAA. He was there for a season and a half before the "alcohol incident" firing. And it's reported that Alabama had him on tap as Coach-in-Waiting behind Saban. I wasn't excited about the hire at first, but the more I looked into it I started to see CDC's reasoning.

    • @jeffgrays9530

@Octavian Okay 8 wins. From 0 wins. That's like Kansas level in the Big 12. He was 9-4 his first year at USC (They were 10-4 the year before). Then a couple of bad games the start of the 2nd year and they are looking to find an "excuse" (your words) to fire him? Rehabbing from an alcohol problem is one thing, but if 2 bad losses early in his second season was the main reason for his firing then I don't know what to say. And USC started the year before he got there ranked #8 and finished unranked. 2017 they started #4 and ended up #12. Preseason rankings aren't exact. There was turmoil and flux at the time he arrived there. Or else they wouldn't have been looking for a new coach after a 10-4 season.

I went to USC. When Sark was hired for USC's head coaching position, people there were very unhappy with the hire because everyone knew that Sark wasn't a top-level coach. He only got hired because AD Pat Haden was caught up in the idea that USC head coaches had to have originally come out of the USC coaching tree.
