Smartest comment I’ve seen on here. People think it’s smart for 12 teams? The juggernauts of Bama, Clemson, Ohio St, Oklahoma would just beat up on those 7-12 seeds. If Bama blew through the playoffs in 2021, LSU did in 2020, and Clemson did in 2019 than what makes people think a 7-12 ranked teams would fair any better?

More teams is NOT, NOT, NOT the answer. That doesn’t fix the problem, it just adds more layers. The problem is that recruits from Texas and California that used to go to Texas and USC and recruits from Florida that used to go to Miami and Florida State are now going to Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. The problem is not adding more inferior teams for Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson to destroy. Heck, the playoffs semi final games aren’t even competitive NOW , the answer is for the schools I mentioned to get their act together in recruiting. All 3 starting quarterbacks for 2021 from Alabama, Clemson AND Ohio State are from California.

You have those teams play each other, and the winners of #5 vs #12, #6 vs #11, #7 vs #10, and #8 vs #9 play #1, #2, #3, and #4. You get rewarded for having a great regular season record by getting an extra byweek and one less game you have to play.

Guaranteeing power five conference champions spots would completely ruin the sport. Out of conference games would be essentially meaningless, and the regular season wouldn’t be nearly as fun. Like Wilson said, you would end up with the same final teams
My proposal: Five team playoff. The fifth spot is given to the highest ranked undefeated group of five team. If there are none, it just goes to the fifth best power five team.
Eliminate divisions in power conferences. They’re great for scheduling, but aside from that they’re unneeded and create problems in the CFP landscape.

If the goto 8 teams or 12 teams they will not give automatic bids to conference champions if they have two divisions in them.
They cannot give automatic bids because you could have teams with 3 or 4 losses getting into the playoffs and a more deserving team is left out. Notre Dame is a equal partner like the P5 conferences and you know they would be against automatic bids, because they would have to join a conference if the did give automatic bids. I have heard the “redoing conference alignment” stuff that people have been talking about and if you think the conferences would let that happen you have lost your mind. They have a blueprint on how to have a large playoff system and give automatic bids to conference champions already, it’s the system used by the FCS division of football. I wonder why no one talks about it?

What's being omitted from the discussion is that bowl games will likely be scrapped. ESPN organizes most bowl games through its ESPN Events subsidiary. The playoff would bring them better ratings/more ad revenue without having to pay to produce events out of pocket. The reason that the power 5 schools are better than the group of 5 schools is simply because before social media became a thing those were the teams that got the most television exposure which eventually led to kids who wanted to play in the NFL going to these schools because of the television exposure that they received. Sometimes a lot of those G5 teams are very good. Good enough to beat a team like Alabama? Idk maybe, maybe not 🤷🏿‍♂️ but you can’t deny that In 2020 the sun belt conference was playing some good football. U have the American conference that honestly is starting to become like a 6th power 5 conference. I would have at least liked to see a teams like Cincinnati, Louisiana, coastal Carolina, BYU, or Liberty at least get a chance because of how hard they worked to get the records that they got. The current format that they have basically tells ppl that hard work doesn’t pay off. I know some of u may say well they could get into a NY6 but none of those kids want to play in those games I promise u if u go to any of these other schools and ask them if they would want to either play in a NY6 game or an 16 team playoff format they would all take the playoff. These kids are competitors. We may look at them and say they have no chance but a true competitor always believes that if they put in the effort they can win. Honestly the ppl in charge need to come to the realization that 1. We live in a point in time now to where if u wanted to you could literally watch any game that you want even for the group of 5 teams. 2. People would much rather watch a playoff game between teams that played their way in by either Winning their conference or playing a very tough schedule or both than watch a 6-6 western Michigan play a 5-7 western Kentucky in the hot Cheetos bowl. I don’t understand why they’re so reluctant to change with the times. Things are changing and they needed to change if they want more ppl to watch College football. They don’t want to give the group of 5 teams a chance to win a national championship. Think about it...the ppl in charge didn’t start seriously thinking about a playoff format until teams like Boise St started to become really close to making it in the BCS national championship. People would be more willing to pay more for a playoff game than a bowl game. If they expanded to 16 teams yes there would still be those teams while are just good and always manage to make it in but I promise you it won’t be the same 16 teams every year. Expanding would also give television exposure to smaller schools. Kids would eventually start saying I don’t have to move from north Cali to Tuscaloosa to have a shot to win a natty and receive television exposure like players such as Najee Harris did or Any of most of the 5⭐️ or 4⭐️ recruits did since the playoff began. Expanding could lead to a more balanced recruitment process for everyone. It would eventually become more competitive. Which is better for everyone. The comment section shows who has a losing mentality and who doesn’t. If y’all honestly think that just by being named Alabama or Ohio state or just being in a power 5 conference means that you’re automatically better than a team in the Group of 5 you have a losing mentality. This sport is played on a field not on a sheet of paper. Every year we have a team that everyone thinks is going to fail succeed. Do you know why? Because they believe that they have a fair chance at winning every game and put in the hard work at practice and during the game to win. Every year in every sport we have a team beat another team with a better record than them. Every year in every sport at least a couple of the name brand teams lose to a team that isn’t as widely known because the name brand didn’t put in the work and the no name brand did. Teams like Alabama have a dynasty because they put in the work not because they’re named Alabama. The reason a lot of people have a problem with the current CFP format is because it only rewards the name brand teams that worked hard and not all the teams that worked hard. In the 2020-21 season we had 6 teams( Coastal Carolina, Ohio State,Cincinnati, San Jose State, Notre Dame and Alabama) finish the regular season undefeated and only 2 were rewarded for their hard work. We had at about 5 or 6 teams to end the regular or entire season with 1 loss( Clemson, BYU, Liberty and Ball St) and a couple or so teams that had 2 loss but we’re very good football teams (Oklahoma, Georgia, and Louisiana come to mind). I would also like to add that Louisiana almost beat Coastal Carolina and beat down an Iowa State who beat Oklahoma the 1st time and lost a close game in the Big 12 championship 2nd time around. Out of all of these teams that I named only 4 were rewarded for their hard work and effort. How can you honestly call yourself a sports fan and not believe that hard work pays off?How can you be a sports fan and not believe that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard? Expand the CFP format to 16 teams. Have a 10 or 11 game season and have about 8 or 9 conference games with about 2 or 3 non-conference games. Make all 10 conference champs an automatic bid and decide who the other teams will be based on things such as strength of schedule and record. Doing this gives all who worked hard a fair shot. Those who will be crowned kings of CFB will be outright champs with no doubt. Go back and watch a lot of these NY6 bowls and imagine them all being playoff games, then you will realize how exciting it would be. If you believe that everything in life predetermined then what is the point in even trying. If you guys believe in predestination in sports then what’s the point of even playing sports?

Here's two more situations that's fascinating.
This year if a 9-3 Florida Team met up with an Undefeated Alabama team in the SEC Championship..that game would absolutely be meaningless for Florida and its Fans because at best even if Florida wins with 3 losses they wouldn't make it in the. CFP 4 team format they would go to an Outback or Citrus bowl game and none of there senior starters would play they wouldn't even suit up for the SEC championship game they be getting ready for the draft...under the new Playoff Expansion a 9-3 Florida team who plays in the SEC championship that game would mean so.ething and all there players would play because if they win baby there in...
Another situation they talk about how this new Expansion would water down the regular season by default i would argue it already is because if your a 2 loss team in the regular season not name Clemson,Alabama, or Ohio State none of your games matter anymore a 2 loss Iowa team rank 16 vs a 2 Loss Penn St team ranked 13 if they played in regular season that game would already be meaningless..under the new Exspansion that game would mean a great deal..And teams with 1,2, even 3 losses early on most certainly catch fire at the end of the year get in the tournament and have A shot of winning the whole thing teams who normally would be left out and pissed and blow a team out in a meaningless bowl game will now have the chance to redeem themself..
Schools and Television make more money yes.
Do players likeness benefit a great deal with expanded playoffs yes
Do the fans get more drama and more teams in a tournament with more excitement to see more star players go head to head one last time before turning pro = yes...
The only ones who don't like this are the premidona programs who have had there strings all over college football

It’s literally more than 8 teams starting from the FCS all the way down to even a lot of little league divisions. Like seriously, guys don’t feed into this agenda that 4 teams is enough. The reality is they just want to keep that national championship money between the top power 5 programs and say that they’re giving other conferences a chance when they’re not. A group of 5 team could literally go undefeated and they would still try to figure out a way to put a 2 loss household name in there instead.
