The problem with the 49ers line was the multiple backups playing guard and center. One of the backup centers had never played center before.
The right guard being out of position too often made McGlinchey look bad.

If the D-end is coming off and beating him on the far side/outside shoulder immediately at the snap to pressure the QB, how is that the guard's fault? The guard is on the inside and has nothing to do with McGlinchey's outside pass blocking skills.

​@@emilianoo.1596 Well for one thing, blown combo blocks. It only takes one player to get their assignment wrong and make the other one look bad.
Also missing an assignment when pulling for sweeps, or on a trap play, etc. A guard missing those could make the tackle look really bad.
Other aspects of line play are also a group effort. If one player isn't on the same page, it can mess up the assignment(s) of others.
If the backup center who's never played the position doesn't call the right protections because he's new to it, that can also put other linemen out of position.
Line play is very much a collective effort and requires very good teamwork to be successful.
That's why it so important that we got Alex Mack for great Center play, protection calls, and generally better teamwork on the line.
Alex was the 2nd highest graded center in the NFL. Trent Williams 2nd highest Left Tackle. Laken Tomlinson 8th best Left Guard, Mike McGlinchey 8th Right Tackle. Our backup center and right guard were not rated in the top 10.
With Alex the line could be top 10 to top 5.

This is why I don't get the Mac Jones hate. He's no better off than the quarterbacks people are putting ahead of him. Wilson didn't play enough credible games to buy him being better, Lance barely played at all, and Fields despite the numbers is inaccurate with his throws. Every quarterback behind Lawrence is a crapshoot so why not draft somebody like Jones that has enough tape to tell you who he is on the field.

@@maxcaplin5112 We saw Dwayne Haskins put up numbers in that Ohio state offense and virtually be a bust on the pro level so that's not something you should push as a measure of who's better. Also most of these quarterbacks that are starting to come in are far from accurate. Remember how all over the place Josh Allen was for the first 2 years of his pro career and how inaccurate Lamar Jackson still is going into year 4. San Francisco is built to win now and waiting on a quarterback to figure that out might not be in the teams plans.

Once all the old school QBs are gone who’s going to dominate the league definitely no Mac Jones type

Put Mahomes with Tampa where he gets great O line protection, a top notch defense, and too many receivers and tight ends to throw to, who do you think wins? No field stretcher can win with a bad foot and three scrub O linesmen. Brady got lucky with Brees playing like a 65 year old, Rodgers having a weaker team around him, and an injury ridden KC … That’s just facts.

Jones tape is way better then fields or lance tape. Last year everyone was talking about burrow because of how great a statistical season he had Jones had a better statistical season with a harder schedule and lesser weapons. No qb is a lock to be good but from all we can use to eval them Jones is by far the most likely of the 3 to be hit.

@@jburd7652 they both had the 2nd strength of schedule for some reason I thought lsu had the 4th. Burrow definitely had better weapons it’s not even that close. Waddle was injured in the 5th game so Jones really only had devonta smith while burrow had Justin Jefferson and jamarr chase they even had marshal who is going to go in the first round this year. I don’t think Jones is better then burrow but that wasn’t the point. It’s not just that Jones is better day one then lance and fields it’s that fields tape shows that his mechanics are bad and inconsistent they will likely need to rework his throwing motion and once u start tinkering with that all bets are off. Lance averaged 12 completions a game in 2019 and in 2020 the game he played was very meh. Jones tape is excellent and he’s way better then jimmy he’s more talented then Matt Ryan. Yes fields and lance have higher upside and nothing is guaranteed when drafting a qb but to ignore all the signs u see when watching the tape on the 3 players is a mistake.

If u really believe smith and metchie are better then chase, Jefferson and Marshall u are the only person on earth to believe that. When I say tape u seem to misunderstand I don’t mean just watch the game and look at the score/stats I mean his throwing mechanics, his ability to quickly read the defense and go through his progressions and make the proper decision. Even if a receiver is open did his throw land in the proper location did he hit the back shoulder or did he lead the receiver properly so it was a td and not just a completion. What evidence do u have that Jones won’t be elite because all his tape indicates he is elite so I’d like to know where u getting your information. Yes Rodgers rebuilt his arm action but countless qbs have tried and failed so a record of 1 for 85 isn’t worth risking 3 first rounders for. Yes there is some chance fields and lance end up being better but all the evidence and that’s what responsible people use points to Jones being the best of the 3.

They could turn Mac Jones into that QB. He has athleticism in him, just hasn’t had to use it. He runs a speed comparable to Mahomes...

They want a qb that can do everything a traditional pocket passer can do, but also has the athleticism to escape the pocket when things break down. Occasionally they might be asked to run, but they predominantly will be expected to throw the ball. I'm a bit curious as to why your statement seems to suggest this is an either/or thing.

It's called evolution.. The 1980's style QB is going the way of the dinosaur.. You have DE that are 6'5 245 running 4.5's. Defenses are getting bigger stronger and faster.

@Orlando sanchez sr I agree. Drafting Mac Jones at 3 is a nightmare. You can’t give up that much draft capital for a guy that has no chance of ever being a top 10 QB. Even if Jones hits his ceiling he’s not a top 10-15 QB... and that’s his CEILING... You just can’t draft a guy 3 with no ceiling. It’s unforgivable.

Wilson has said, numerous times, that he would love to be drafted by the Jets, or by any of the other teams that are looking to draft a QB. He probably does have a preference, but it would be stupid for him to say what it is out-loud. Wilson is a lot of things. Stupid isn't one of them.

Didn't Brady, Warner etc come into the league with the same sentiment and prove people wrong? A lot of the time it's not necessarily the player but the team he's saddled with. In the right system a player who wasn't highly touted could be a MVP caliber player.

The game was a lot different when they were drafted. Any both of them, while they weren’t mobile, they had physical traits/tools that Mac Jones simply doesn’t have. Whose the last immobile, pure pocket passer drafted early round 1 that worked out? The games different now. Giving up that much to get a QB with such a capped ceiling as absolutely asinine.

Steve was making a last ditch effort to help save his homeboy from the Jets possibly messing him up like they did Sam Darnold.

@terrell ivey Brees was a statue by the standards we're talking about here. I didn't include Rodgers in the count. I said statues have won 17 rings since 2000 not who's "elite," which is an entirely subjective measure of a qb. I'd rather be Eli (who wasn't elite) with 2 rings than Dan Marino. The point is most of the ultimately successful teams have had qbs who Bart Scott thinks are obsolete.
Edit: Or to put ot another way, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Wilson and Mahomes are the only non-statues to win it since 2000.

Well, you're arguing with yourself here bc no one is saying that. Maybe if you tried to understand what you are reading and its context, you'd realize that the argument is "the idea that an exclusive pocket guy can't be successful (which I believe B. Scott was making and to which my op was a response) is wrong, and here's iron-clad evidence in the form of the majority of recent championships."
Also, as a former Charger fan I can tell you Drew Bress was a pure pocket passer from day one. Not a scrambler, runner or a roll-out guy. Much closer to Mac Jones than to Fields or Lance.
As for Eli, again, it'd be nice if you would actually try to understand what was written. I'd rather be Eli with 2 rings than Marino. Not "Eli was better than Marino." No one thinks that. I'm saying the ultimate measure of if you've got the right qb is rings.
