The targeting rule is in place to protect the player doing the hitting and the player getting hit. Wade lowered his head and hit with the crown of his helmet. Hitting someone with the crown of your helmet puts you at risk of spinal cord injuries. Yes, Lawrence ducked while he was bracing for the hit but Wade still led with the crown of his helmet. The part of the rule that gets a player ejected should be eliminated. Eject a player if it happens 2 times in a game but not on the first penalty.

Wade didn’t do that. Lawrence moved his down right into Wade’s.
Lawrence ducked so low his knee almost touched down. That’s why their helmets hit. Wade’s crown would not have hit anything if Lawrence “took it” instead of ducking. Lawrence caused the contact of the helmets.

Some colleges played 5 games some played a whole season. CBS or NBC ain't gonna televise an Alabama vs Miami (OH) National Championship it doesn't appeal to no one.
I thought Lawrence had to have been out for the game telling the way he was laying there but when he got off the sideline and had a 60 yard touchdown run it broke my heart his acting won them that game.

Lowered his helmet and led with it. It was targeting. Intentional or not that's the rule. Refs made the right call based on the rule. If you don't like the call then it's the rule you have a problem with because the refs called it right.

honestly after watching this (as a lifelong Buckeye fan) ive gained a bit of respect for trevor lawrence. its cool he says that it sucks to see and that hes a good player. honestly i believe if this didnt happen we wouldve won that game. but it did happen and clemson rallied back. fortunately this year was a different outcome. Hope trevor has a great NFL career.

I was pulling for Clemson, but not a fan of that particular call. If you lower body,, your head will naturally go down in order to tackle with your shoulders. But if the ball carrier moves to your left or right,, causing your helmet makes the initial contact, its a penalty. To me, it is different than spearing (80s), but not to NCAA.
Now have Salkski revisit both of his targeting calls. 😐

We could play the if game all day. For example clemson vs Norte dame. If the refs would’ve replayed etiennes fumble that they returned for a “touchdown” but he really didn’t make it across the goal line. We could’ve won. @@why-even-try-brotendo The problem with targeting is that your penalized when you “lower your head to initiate contact” but since it is physically impossible to lower the shoulder without simultaneously lowering the head, it renders the targeting call subjective to the replay officials. It could quite possibly be called on every play according to the vagueness of the rule.
Even in this video, you can clearly see Trevor has his helmet turned to look at Saun Wade, bracing for the impact. I am not questioning if the helmets made contact, but as someone who didn't even know about the call until this year, I have to agree with the people that argue how Trevor is ducking. To me, it does look like Lawrence is preparing to use his shoulder pads to take the impact instead of leaving his back open. It looks to me like he saw an impending sack coming and instead of tucking the ball and curling into a protective position, he turned into the oncoming tackle. It is in the past, and we can't change it. I am glad neither player was significantly hurt and will leave the speculation to others who are itching for a fight. I understand that 2020 has been difficult, but there are new bowl games we can watch here on youtube, even if we don't have the cable channels.

I think there should be a flag for targeting but two types one for ejection where the hit was blatant and obvious and one for 15 yards and a warning but I know there would be controversy with how you rule it an ejection.
That was not targeting. Just a hard hit. Just one of 3 bad calls that cost OSU the game.
There was no intent. Just incidental contact. To quote Holden Caufield "Lawrence is a phony." He did what he felt he had to do to get the call, but he's less of a man for it. How you behave in these kinds of situations defines you. We all saw how Wade handled it. In the aftermath of being ejected, Wade didn't spend the entire time pleading with the officials. Wade ran to his defensive teammates on the field and encouraged them. Beautiful redemption.

People can say I'm just a salty Buckeyes fan but I said this the SECOND that hit happened and I still feel the same way today...Trevor Lawrence KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING when he stayed down on that field, rolling around like somebody had just shot him. He DELIBERATELY forced the officials to "look at" the hit with his dramatic acting. Once the officials saw the piddly little "helmet-to-helmet" hit and college football's golden boy laying on the turf, there was no question they were going to eject Wade for "targeting". It was a BS call then and it's a BS call now. OSU would've won it all last year if not for the despicable actions of the referees in this Clemson game...and it all started with the acting job from Trevor Lawrence on the sack from Shaun Wade.
The "targeting" call that occurred in this year's OSU vs Clemson Sugar Bowl was NOTHING LIKE the Shaun Wade hit. That targeting call on the hit on Justin Fields had less to do with the injury Fields suffered on the hit and was more about protecting the idiot Linebacker who used his head as a battering ram. Compare this year's OSU/Clemson targeting call hit against the hit that nearly put Ryan Shazier in a wheelchair for the rest of his life...they are LITERALLY IDENTICAL hits. And that is precisely why this year's hit was called "targeting"...it was more about protecting Clemson's idiot Linebacker from spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair as a quadriplegic than it was about protecting Justin Fields.
I love Shaun wade but he is not meant to be an outside corner. He was a superstar at the nickel. I hope nfl teams don’t overlook that ability. If he plays the nickel in the nfl he should be a very good player
