@@melroze You've hit the nail on the head. Unless you're really familiar with Texas, you won't appreciate that the donors are NOT like every other blue blood CFB donors. They pour in the most money of any program, and they haven't had a strong AD to keep a tight hand on the reins since DeLoss Dodds. And in fact, towards the end, DeLoss was probably worn out trying to keep the boosters happy while simultaneously keeping them under control.

The Rivals top 100 players had 20 from the state of Texas. Think about that, 20 out of the top 100. No other state came close. But did UT get even a single one of those players? NO! That alone did not bode well for the future of Herman and UT. Can't contend for a conference championship much less contend for a national championship with that kind of fall off in recruiting.
We got Ja’Tavion so that’s 1 but I agree with everything else guy said. We can’t lose our states best players

@R E -Shaka is sitting in 2nd place in the Big-12 and this team CAN play. They just beat Kansas in Lawrence and will be in the Big Dance. You can bet on that. FInally, Shaka has the horses.

I am on that same thought process. This was a boosters decision not a football one. Sam got better every year and was such a man and good leader you had to run with that guy. They should have given Herman a chance to show what would come next and what I saw when Sam went out looked very promising. I think Herman was fired before the start of this season and nothing could save him.

There are definitely tons of ??? with this hire... Is he worth the hire to fire someone that coached a team to .700 record this year... My question is why didn’t Texas do a full search to find the best candidate for the position? Did they look at Matt Campbell? Luke Fickel? Billy Napier? David Shaw? Chris Peterson? None of them would be a perfect candidate and all of them have question marks but IMO they should have a through hiring process...
Maybe Tom Herman will be available and for say.....$10 mill/year, he might think about it.....NOT.

Normally when everyone says sell that’s the time you buy. Everyone seems to be saying Sark isn’t going to workout....just like everyone said Herman was the second coming of DKR 4 years ago and were wrong. If the herd mentality says one thing, do the opposite...probably a good hire here!

So does Tom Herman go to the Nick Saban Coaching Clinic or does he maybe head up north and take the Boise St job? I'm not familiar with any openings still left at a P5 school, so unless something comes up it would seem that Boise is the most attractive opening.
@Octavian That idea of taking the money and waiting has certainly become more viable over the last few years with guys taking a year or two off, working in the booth or something similar, and waiting for the destination of their choosing to open up instead of forcing themselves to take whatever is left available.
Looking ahead a little bit, Virginia Tech may decide to move on from the Justin Fuente experiment if they have a down year. No idea what is going on at Michigan. USC keeps going with this strange on again off again relationship with Clay Helton, they could decide to end that in the next year or two (his contract is up in 2023 if I remember). There is always the chance that somebody tries to make the jump to the NFL too, and opens up that window for Coach Herman. So taking the year, work on his craft and study for a bit without having to worry about the day in and day out details for a little while, and then see what opens might be the better/smarter call to make.

Possibly the biggest risk Texas could take. Herman wins sugar bowl in 2018 with 2 ranked losses of 4 total that year by a total of 20 points, then he loses to ranked Baylor, Iowa state, Oklahoma, and LSU in 2019 for 4 of 5 losses being against ranked opponents. Mind you playing 2 CFP teams in a year and being within a touchdown both times. Then in 2020 he loses to top 10 OU and top 10 ISU. Has 4 bad losses in 3 years. Be careful sark, you have no wiggle room

As an Alabama fan I’m happy for Sarkisian but at the same time I hate to see him go. I’m glad he’s taking a job outside of the SEC. Texas is getting a good coach with a genius offensive mind. Calling it now. Texas will be in the College Football Playoffs within the next 3 years.

@@michaelmerck7576These young athletes coming out of high school want to be part of something special. Texas bringing in Sarkisian will give them the spark they’ve needed in recruiting. Not to mention a lot of these elite recruits could have the possibility of being a first year STARTER compared to having to wait their turn if they went to some of the other elite programs that already have a roster full of 4 and 5 star players. The state of Texas is rich with talent. Plenty enough to go around. The main problem has been other programs outside of the state of Texas coming in and taking those recruits. I think Sarkisian will turn things around for the Longhorns.

We do it too at ohio state. We rehabilitated Greg Schiano and others. We lost tom herman, Schiano and we lose staff non stop as well
I think a lot of people are going to be surprised. Forget his mixed track record. He's an offensive guru, and that is exactly what Texas needs right now. While I believe that the Herman firing is a bit rash, Sark will provide some spark to a good returning group of Longhorn players. Look for the Horns to provide a serious challenge to OU in the coming years.

They deserve each other. No way he should be a head coach already after his spectacular flame out only 5 years ago. Especially at a preeminent program like Texas.
This is a HUGE gamble for Texas and Chris DelConte (Texas AD) better know what he's doing. Sure, Sarkisian has a great offensive mind and has developed great QB's, no doubt about it. He's not from Texas and does not know the "lay of the land" and it's questionable how well he can recruit in-state. Tom Hermann was 8-3 in his last year and two of the losses were in OT. Besides he won every single bowl game as a head coach !
If Sarkisian goes 8-3 AND wins his first bowl game at Texas, he's where Tom Herman was this year. No progress and it costs Texas over $ 25 Million in a year where the athletic department has laid off 35 people and cut salaries. That is NOT setting well in Austin and besides, it does NOT include what they are going to have to pay Sarkisian and his staff.
As a die hard Longhorn fan and ex-student, this is, at best, a risky move.
Go 1-4 against Oklahoma and you're gone at Texas and that's the way it should be!

He did very well at Washington. Usc wasn’t a great showing, part of that was his alcoholism, which he’s addressed. He’s also done an amazing job at Alabama.

@Chris Handsome he went 34-29 at UW after taking over a team that was 0-12 and had basically nobody on the roster. That’s a good turn around. In a few short years. And saban’s teams don’t put up offenses like they have under sark. I’m not saying sark is the next nick saban. I’m saying he hasn’t been a failure everywhere.

I would agree but he lost Quinn and didn’t make the big12 championship with a senior QB. That’s just unacceptable, losing Quinn could haunt this program for a decade plus unless Steve somehow turns it around.
@@mtn7836 They went 4-0 in bowl games under Herman. Go look at Sarkisians record with UW and USC and compare it to Herman at Houston and Texas.
@@bbginc694 if that’s how you’re looking at it then you don’t know how to do proper research. Sark inherited a Washington team in shambles and turned them around drastically, the year before sark got there Washington went 0-12 and after a year he had 4 winning seasons there. his problems at usc were due to his alcoholism and he’s been sober for over 3 years now. There’s no denying sark has brilliant football mind. There’s no excuse for keeping Herman when you lose the top prospect of a generation and all you had to do was make the conference title game with a loaded roster. Going 4-0 in bowl games mean nothing when you play subpar competition every year (except Georgia) our bowl opponents were nothing to boast about. When you’re losing recruits left and right like Herman was you have to be fired, losing Quinn was unacceptable. Sark obviously isn’t my first choice but I’m happy to give him a shot over Herman.

Based off these guys you would think Texas has been a 3-9 team for the past few years. It's not a complete rebuild this team is built to win now and can content at the top I would assume by next year.
To be clear, Ehlinger is a mediocre QB, he does not have arm strength and his decision making did not improve. He’s a runner, that’s all he’s got
I’ve said this since I’ve seen him play. Dude is -B Tim Tebow.
He was a v. good QB until late Oct 2019... one of the top five pre-season 2019 and 2020. He was a 70% career passer at that point (2.5 years in), but upper body injuries then and again this year seem to have shortened his throw. Plus, he has not quickened his obviously slow release. He will be a good coach one day but not a good pro.
UT playbook has a qb keeper left and right + a 50/50 ball in hope of a pass interference. Elingher is tough, but he isnt a good qb.

How many OCs at Bama have gotten head coaching jobs? How many have had better then moderate success? Also, I have to look at his time in Atlanta......He was the worst OC they ever had...they still haven't recovered...Good luck to Texas....I think they will need it

Not sure about this one. IMHO I would have gone after the current head coach at Iowa State, Matt Campbell, who has built that program up from scratch and WON without the mega star recruits flooding into Austin. If you are going to give second chances, isn't Gus Malzahn available? How many times did he beat Saban? Or how about Luke Fickell at Cincinnati? What about current NFL OC's like Joe Brady at the Carolina Panthers by way of LSU. Which reminds me, wasn't it Brady's passing passing scheme at LSU that walked into Austin and ripped "DBU" to shreds?? I could go on but I think you get my point. Not a big Texas fan but football is better when Texas is relevant. I hope Sarc is the answer but only time will tell. He may want to call Mac Brown for some advice. BTW, how is Mac doing at North Carolina these days??

Joey Galloway isn't educated. Were the 4th most talented roster in the nation and losing to unranked teams every year. Our junior and sophomore classes were both top 3 in the country. Its isn't THAT Herman lost games, its why. Last year was supposed to be our year. Drew Mehringer was a wideout coach who basically stirred mutiny under Herman and wasn't dealt with until the end of the season and was a major reason our offense fell apart in 19. He wiped the slate clean. Started over. The Eyes Of Texas controversy split the team and Tom didn't do his job to lead the team. He let the team be divided. Week 1 Sam Ehlinger stood on the field alone to celebrate the tradition. Week 2 the defensive captain stood with him while the other 6 captains and 51 players went to the locker room. CDC stepped in October on our bye week and said Enough is enough. You should be 1-3 losing to massively undertalented teams including what was an absolute miracle to beat TT who lost to, I'll say louder for the people in the back, HOUSTON BAPTIST the week before. CDC takes control of the situation, Texas comes out and beats Baylor and gets traction and then topples the #6 team in the country and only lose 1 game for the rest of the season. You don't get to make that mistake twice. You run the locker room or get out of the way. Even with some of those wins it was honestly despite bad decisions. Herman was the issue. The talent was there but 6 starters opting out before the Alamo bowl and some of whom have no chance of being drafted tells you all you need to know. That locker room was a cancer and Sam Ehlinger was the real leader and come together point.
As an OU fan, I'm thrilled with this hire. Whatever scandal runs him out of town is going to set Texas back for years.

As a University of Washington Alumni I was glad to see Sark leave, he is a mediocre head coach and did not do anything in 6 years at UW. Peterson came in and took us 1 game away from the National title game. He is a great assistant coach and recruiter, but not a proven head coach. I give him 3 years and he will be gone just like Herman and Strong.
Charlie Strong may have been the worst hire Texas ever made. Letting Tom Herman go may well be the second biggest mistake after hiring Charlie Strong. To be fair, a different AD in each case.
How can you say he did nothing while at Washington when he took over a program that went 0-12 the year before he arrived and builds it up to have the talent to reach the playoffs by right after he leaves, how is that equivalent to "did not do anything"?

I'll say no because of the impatience factor in big time college football and not because of his abilities. Texas is desperate for a winning program which places unrealistic expectations on any coach who goes there.

Best comment yet and right on. Look at WIll Muschamp. A GREAT Def. Coordinator at LSU and Texas. One of the best in the past several decades but not a head coach (South Carolina after Florida) . Look at Buddy Ryan with the 1985 Chicago Bears. Best defensive team ever put on the field in the NFL and Super Bowl Champs...but not a great or even good head coach.

No, it’s not a home run hire... If hiring a coach with 8 or 9 win seasons is a home run hire, then 75% of hire will be a home run hire. I’d say it’s a single or double but no RBI... Better than striking out though. We can only wait and see...
I hate when this happens. These decisions should never be made when the season isn’t finished. Its a huge distraction and creates an awkwardness. Same thing happened to Alabama in 2016 in the Peach Bowl and National Championship when Kiffin left. Its a distraction and the coach that is leaving doesn’t usually finish the season strong, considering their leaving anyway. Sucks for Alabama.

I believe his offense will be effective. He develops quarterbacks. The defensive lines he'll face in the Big12 are inferior to most of the defensive lines in the SEC. Just my take. Hope he succeeds.
I don’t know if I’d want to touch him if I was the Texas AD. Sark got fired for being drunk multiple times on the job. That isn’t the man I want leading my program, especially in Texas

I don’t think Joey Galloway does homework. The recruiting has been great. Top 10 recruiting classes many times this decade. The talent is there. The problem has been coaching. Texas has been getting beat by less talent. How does Joey Galloway have a job at ESPN. He should be doing local radio.
Herman shouldn't have been fired. I like Sarkisian but idk if this is the right fit for UT.

Texas has a way of letting outside forces with deep pockets have input on decisions and Meyer isn’t gona go for that. Also I don’t think we offered enough money because it looks like 12 million is his asking price and I’m sure we didn’t go that high... idiots.

USC is my team (after UCLA lol). We were average at best when he was there. I'm sorry but Sark is not head coaching material. A really good offensive play caller but not a head coach. Texas might be 0-3 in coaching hires since Mack Brown left. But hey, we'll see...

Sark was battling an addiction when he left USC. That’s not “tanking.” When you look at all the hired the AD has made they have all been home runs. The AD didn’t hire Herman

Doesn't matter who the AD hires, UT needs to temper their expectations of the team or else they'll be looking for yet another coach in 2 years. Herman was doing well but the dilusion of UT thinking they can compete with the Alabama and Clemson will have them replacing coaches like they're Texas Cattle.
