Di Maria is so under-rated. Has always performed in the biggest of stages. Whether in UCL, or Copa, or World Cup. You wonder if he wasn't injured in '14, Argentina probably would have 4 World Cups. It's sad no one is talking about him in the same breath as Messi and Mbappe.

On top of Higuain and Palacio's legendary fuckups, IIRC, the Argentine team was also getting over a flu or something. Something like half of them, including Messi, were playing at below 100%. It was heartbreaking.
Angel Di Maria and Emiliano Martinez were the key players in the final that give Argentina the impetus and class to get the job done. They both came to the party and provided the team completeness and ultimate greatness.

Rooting for Argentina, but looking back at the highlights, it’s lowkey frightening how France had that open look at the end of extra time and other looks that could’ve potentially ruined the last dance for Messi.

the final like everything else in this generation looked forced... i dont know why but it looked like more and more of a matrix.. with a known outcome... and tv drama to go with it it just did not look natural.. france not showing up for 70 min then suddenly showing up and score 2 goals not 1 lol just like holland before... championas do not give up goals that easy......

I know I popped a vein or two in my body, when Martinez blocked that French attack with 2 minutes of extra time left! Then Argentina almost score from that block!! My goodness!! let me just say, I know now I have a very strong heart!! I was watching football with people who didn't know Messi (that's my wife and daughter), but they were glued to the telly. When Mbappe scored that volley for the equalizer, the whole family went mad!! This truly was the best football match I ever watched! That match destroyed a lot football leagues around the World, why would you watch a mediocre match after you just watched that final??
When you're a kid, and you play with the ball, in your head you're playing in a World Cup Final, that match brought a lot of new kids to kick the ball.....
I was teaching Esl evening class somewhere in Africa. Game stated 6 pm and I had from 6 pm to 7 pm. My class started 7 pm, my students and i decided to watch tha final and they were surprised how excited I was for the first 75 mins, then everything had changed. We started feeling anxious and were in stitches. For me, this was the best football game.
It's amazing to read how people from every corner of the world on any circumstance (at work, at a mall, at school, at home) were watching this match, from Asia, Africa, South America, Europe... most of them cheering for Argentina and/or for Messi. Thank you all for your support!

It's all about Argentina and Messi and that's deserved but don't forget Mbappe, coz not only did he score a Stunning Goal he converted 3 out of 3 penalties including his shootout penalty against one of the Best Keepers under the most intense pressure. Even Lewandowski, Kane and Messi himself have missed penalties in this tournament under pressure.
That cleat save Argentina’s Martinez had in extra time was perfect goalkeeper form. That glove save Liverpool’s Dudek had in extra time was a pure reflex save. Both were absolutely wonderful.
People talk about France wasn’t there but it’s just that Argentina tactics was spot on. Scaloni knew exactly what needed to be done until he made the sub for Di Maria and he made sure all the XI knew what needed to be done the defense was perfect until the obvious errors and the midfield was brilliant as I expected closing down players & rushing them off the ball so they didn’t have time to think & make key passes and that’s what won them the game within that 75min masterclass. Having Di Maria start on the left kept kounde from going forward knowing Mbappe wouldn’t come back to support and De Paul helped Molina to keep out Mbappe while cutting out griezman passes & helped turnover possession. He was brilliant. I don’t even have to highlight Messi because we all saw his brilliance and determination in the entire World Cup but in this match he was everything. He was the one in his own penalty area heading the ball out for a corner, he was the one who tracked back & won the ball in his own half, he was pressing and even fouled players in the process. He was involved in every key moment of this match and he has silenced anyone who said he’s not good at penalties and couldn’t handle the pressure in big moments because the way he took his penalties against lloris was brilliant and even the one against Netherlands and especially Croatia was excellent.
scaloni has exposed how to stop mbappe, u just need to keep the ball on the opposite side of the pitch with good possession and a good left winger that way opposite team will find it hard to counter attack the ball to mbappe making his pace useless in any game , if they ddnt sub Di Maria it would have ended at 90 mins
I was nervous the entire match even though Argentina had a 2 goal lead up until the 80th minute, then the sky blue & white's defense made mistakes which let France tie the game 2-2. Messi gets the third goal then Mbappe scores a pen to make it 3-3. Argentina kept their composer together and got the victory with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory. No doubt that this is the best World Cup final ever, with the GOAT lifting up the trophy in the end.
This of course has to rank way up there as one of the greatest games ever played, if not the best. These teams were two Titans of massive proportions, the way they battled one another up until the last penalty kick. It must have been very nerve wrecking for both of them to try to win for their countries. It was so much fun to watch this type of "high-powered" soccer. I'm glad Argentina won, as I supported them all the way through. Glad to see Lionel Messi finally get to kiss the World Cup trophy.🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🏆🏆🏆
It was a great ending for sure and probably the greatest if not the second greatest ending. The first 78 minutes was just one sided and not that great though. After that the game changed and opened up immensely.
So happy for Messi . Guy deserves it so much . Even though I am not a fan of Ronaldo as a person I still think he deserves a World Cup for the player he has been . 2 geniuses of football ❤️

I agree that this is the best WC final ever, no previous final as best as this. This final match was as hard as Argentina vs Netherland. Scaloni substituted de Paul....after Argentina scored 2 goals. France should have been lost by 2 goals however same mistake was scaloni, who withdrew di Maria & de Paul & the aftermath of this substitution cleared a 2 goals frm mbappe. Should scaloni had not pulled out de Paul & di maria Argentina would have been easily defeating france and argentina would not have to have penalty shoot out. Remarkably the argentinian substitutions squad also as best as lined up players. It was great to have Emi Martinez being an expirienced goal keeper for facing penalty shoot out. Once more Bravo Argentina....concratulation....I can see argentina will have a 3 stars in their jersey in next WC matches.

Di Maria had to be taken out because he had some physical issues he was recovering from, as a matter of fact, he shouldn't have been there, it was a surprise move on Scaloni's part. It was also surprising, given his lack of fitness that particular day, that he managed to play and in the way he did. That's partly why he left the field smiling 🙂

I can honestly say I had to have a few drinks before the game started and when the game came to the end I didn't know what could happen for each team in extra time. It was insane intensity.

This was likely the greatest futbol match I have ever seen. The match featured two of the very best strikers, with one being on the cusp of futbol immortality, and the other also considered one of the very best in the world, trying to lead the defending champion back to glory. Both sides played at their peak, peak performance and were trading punches like two heavyweight champion boxers, it was definitely a clash best of the very best... and if we are talking all sports, then I would probably even take it over most any other final from any other sport with one exception - that would be the 2016 NBA Finals when Cleveland Cavaliers came back from 1-3 games in a 7 game series to upset the Golden State Warriors, whom had just set the best regular season record in NBA history, going 73-9, and had the first ever unanimous league MVP winner.
My heart stopped beating at the 80 minute mark. The atmosphere went from pure joy to absolute silence and dread in a matter of 2 minutes. Then the 3rd goal, we didnt know if we could cheer or not, until it was confirmed. It was suffering and joy all around. As a country, we've never experienced this kind of collective happiness ever, tomorrow when our boys come home it's gonna be a party

For me, as a cricket fan, the Cricket World Cup final in 2019 is the greatest final that I have ever watched. Keeping it to football, the 2005 UCL final was also up there with the World Cup final 2022.
yes, they were both winners, if you gotta take the game all the way to penalties in a match where both teams found a way to exploit each others' weaknesses and create excitement and entertainment for all then both teams are really first place, the penalties just give it to one team or the other. The crucial penalties against Croatia Holland and France helped Argentina take the cup. Blatant partiality. FIFA drafted the script and well executed. It was a very good final. Much better than most of the recent world cup finals. I've seen every final since 1982 and this was second best to the 1986. The reason why I have it second is that for 80 minutes there was nothing from France. Even extra time was pretty much all Argentina except for the final 3 or 4 minutes when France scored and Kolo Muani had the one on one chance v Martinez. There wasn't enough back and forth really as Argentina probably controlled the whole match apart from minute 80 to 90 and 116 to 120. France basically played hard and had chances etc for 14 minutes out of the 120. The Argentina Germany 1986 games was tense and had more back and forth to it, along with 5 goals and several other good chances. But definetly this final was unforgettable, especially after the finals we have endured in recent years like 2010 and 2014 which were terrible.

Angel Di Maria and Emiliano Martinez were the key players in the final that give Argentina the impetus and class to get the job done. They both came to the party and provided the team completeness and ultimate greatness.

I was teaching Esl evening class somewhere in Africa. Game stated 6 pm and I had from 6 pm to 7 pm. My class started 7 pm, my students and i decided to watch tha final and they were surprised how excited I was for the first 75 mins, then everything had changed. We started feeling anxious and were in stitches. For me, this was the best football game.
It's amazing to read how people from every corner of the world on any circumstance (at work, at a mall, at school, at home) were watching this match, from Asia, Africa, South America, Europe... most of them cheering for Argentina and/or for Messi. Thank you all for your support!

People talk about France wasn’t there but it’s just that Argentina tactics was spot on. Scaloni knew exactly what needed to be done until he made the sub for Di Maria and he made sure all the XI knew what needed to be done the defense was perfect until the obvious errors and the midfield was brilliant as I expected closing down players & rushing them off the ball so they didn’t have time to think & make key passes and that’s what won them the game within that 75min masterclass. Having Di Maria start on the left kept kounde from going forward knowing Mbappe wouldn’t come back to support and De Paul helped Molina to keep out Mbappe while cutting out griezman passes & helped turnover possession. He was brilliant. I don’t even have to highlight Messi because we all saw his brilliance and determination in the entire World Cup but in this match he was everything. He was the one in his own penalty area heading the ball out for a corner, he was the one who tracked back & won the ball in his own half, he was pressing and even fouled players in the process. He was involved in every key moment of this match and he has silenced anyone who said he’s not good at penalties and couldn’t handle the pressure in big moments because the way he took his penalties against lloris was brilliant and even the one against Netherlands and especially Croatia was excellent.

I was nervous the entire match even though Argentina had a 2 goal lead up until the 80th minute, then the sky blue & white's defense made mistakes which let France tie the game 2-2. Messi gets the third goal then Mbappe scores a pen to make it 3-3. Argentina kept their composer together and got the victory with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory. No doubt that this is the best World Cup final ever, with the GOAT lifting up the trophy in the end.

These teams were two Titans of massive proportions, the way they battled one another up until the last penalty kick. It must have been very nerve wrecking for both of them to try to win for their countries. It was so much fun to watch this type of "high-powered" soccer. Di Maria had to be taken out because he had some physical issues he was recovering from, as a matter of fact, he shouldn't have been there, it was a surprise move on Scaloni's part. It was also surprising, given his lack of fitness that particular day, that he managed to play and in the way he did. That's partly why he left the field smiling 🙂

The match featured two of the very best strikers, with one being on the cusp of futbol immortality, and the other also considered one of the very best in the world, trying to lead the defending champion back to glory. Both sides played at their peak, peak performance and were trading punches like two heavyweight champion boxers, it was definitely a clash best of the very best... and if we are talking all sports, then I would probably even take it over most any other final from any other sport with one exception - that would be the 2016 NBA Finals when Cleveland Cavaliers came back from 1-3 games in a 7 game series to upset the Golden State Warriors, whom had just set the best regular season record in NBA history, going 73-9, and had the first ever unanimous league MVP winner.

I think its the best WC final ever but not the best final ever...the hyperbole of things in the present, clouding memories of great moments in the past.
It's not hyperbole. This is the most prized possession in football and every single mistake had huge consequences. That's why it's the best final. The pressure of the moment was unbelievable.

For example the 86 final between Arg v Ger went on a similar route....but with the passage of time, unless u r argentine, nobody remembers....which illustrates my point

Argentina game never surprise me I know they are the best when they play Italy with South America Champions and Europe champions when they beat Italy 3 0 I just know if they put their head together they will do a great thing in this world cup they deliver
It was a very good final. Much better than most of the recent world cup finals. I've seen every final since 1982 and this was second best to the 1986. The reason why I have it second is that for 80 minutes there was nothing from France. Even extra time was pretty much all Argentina except for the final 3 or 4 minutes when France scored and Kolo Muani had the one on one chance v Martinez. There wasn't enough back and forth really as Argentina probably controlled the whole match apart from minute 80 to 90 and 116 to 120. France basically played hard and had chances etc for 14 minutes out of the 120. The Argentina Germany 1986 games was tense and had more back and forth to it, along with 5 goals and several other good chances.
But definetly this final was unforgettable, especially after the finals we have endured in recent years like 2010 and 2014 which were terrible.
Because of the penalty kick drama,,it beats the 1986 final,,

Has to be. I don't think we'd see something like that again in terms of the tension, drama, pressure, passion and tempo. What a game!
when france tied the game and sent it to extra time i thought argentina just let a championship get away and i thought france would win but i am glad argentina won, it has been a while since a non eropean team won the cup
