@@Crundmama Perhaps, but I still agree with the panel that they should have aimed to spend their money on either a stronger backfield or at least a mid that would suit their needs. It IS very difficult to find a solid CB to lead the line as they're quite rare.

@@aetarz Not sure about that. Luiz being last minute was a mistake of their own creation. They prioritised other positions and panicked. They prioritised Pepe when they had bigger issues elsewhere... a situation that is compounded by not even playing him. Good players are rarely 'available'; it's a marketplace. You need good scouts who identify talent that fits into the system, which was another criticism.. there is no cohesion or clear thinking.

It's very easy to sit in the studio and point out mistakes made in terms of signings in a hypothetical scenario but doing the business in the transfer market isn't easy at all. Arsenal are in the Europa league so attracting big names to the club is really very difficult job...
Arsenal have lost to Sheffield Utd, Leicester, Brighton and drew with Wolves, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Norwich. How many big names in those teams? These are relegation results.

Juls, it is not hard to find defenders. Lascelles from Newcastle or Nathan Ake, Tarkowski etc... Koscienly said he was leaving a month before the end of the transfer window, so throw 40-50 million for these players instead of pepe.

Arsenal have no structure simple, Brighton were literally strolling through the midfield the problem isn't just their defence, the Jules guy was hitting the wrong nail. Even teams that don't sign players, have a structure or system. Look at Chelsea with transfer ban and injuries, forced to play youth, they have a system and a good structure.

First time I've seen Ian Darke. Feels weird seeing a person to a voice I've heard for years.
Wierder is that his normal speaking voice is like his commentary voice. When he's having a normal conversation it's like he's commentating a game.
hes actually right, they dont pressure or get compact, they sit in the middle ground of no defending. its easy to walk through. they dont cover their own players in possession incase the lose the ball, so its easy to counter attack too, both goals at norwich for example.

The board can easily be blamed . We needed a CB and Upamecano was about £50m and apparently we couldn’t afford it yet 2 weeks later we bought Pepe for about 1.5x the amount we were gagging at . The worst part is Pépé isn’t even a starter .

I’m not a manager but what i have seen so far, based on the available players, Arsenal should go for 3 at the back, David Luis is a different player when he plays with 2 other center halves. They should go for 3-4-1-2 with Aumameyang and Lacazette as two strikers with Ozil as no. 10. And play Torreira and Gendouzi in the midfield.
For Arsenal if a manager wants a change, 10 players of the first team should be benched and and sold.starting,with ex player ozil Play youngsters, couldn't be worse than Luiz in defense.
I hate when people talk out this "world class" attack arsenal have. Jules is right and he didn't really have enough time to fully explain, so ill expand for those who are curious. Basically, when you look at Pepe and say "72 Million" that is only correct on a technicality, it was an installment signing, Arsenal has only paid part of that 72 and will continue to pay it off for another 3 years or so. NO TOP DEFENDER WOULD BE ABLE TO BE PURCHASED THIS WAY. This is why Arsenal couldn't get Zaha, this is why top defenders like Koulibaly were never an option for Arsenal in reality. To buy true top players you either have to pay in full or be able to pay large portions (for example paying 65 million upfront on a 100 million deal) and because of the way the Club is set up Arsenal does not have the funds lying around to shell out for the immediate game-changers that they need. Arsenal won't be able to challenge until the financial structure of the club changes, they hit on a bunch of low budget gems, or some of the younger players who were injured (Holding) find form immediately

Reason why Arsenal got Nicolas Pepe in the first place, instead of buying a defender was due to the fact that they didn’t want to give the chance for other clubs to strengthen their squads (city rivals like Tottenham and Chelsea, despite the transfer ban)
They should try and get Idrissa Gueye, i know he just got to PSG but he is a really underrated defensive midfielder who even though isn't a central defender but like Jules said they could at least have someone who could help cover for them ahead of the back line

These mofos underestimate Arsene wenger. This current squad (on paper) is better than some of the teams wenger had back in the day. At one point he took scrubs like denilson, djourou, Bendtner, etc and took them to the knockouts of the champions league. His style isn’t stale, you just have a bunch of lazy average spoiled premodonnas now a days who can’t meet standards of the old. That can be said about many teams today. Did he need to move on from the club after so many years? yes. But the amount of doubt people had in his abilities was baffling
Steve was right and has said what most Arsenal fans haven't been saying or are afraid to say. They know their biggest weaknesses are at the back and in the middle but they go ahead and spend 72m on one player. That money could have been used to buy players to cover the back and middle.

Stevies spot on. Since day one of Emery in charge the defence has been awful and never got better. There's no organisation, team spirit or leaders, can't even find a captain. They're in trouble now, relegation form. There should've been someone in place to replace Emery, it was obvious he had to go six months ago.
