      Makes Ovechkin having a real shot at breaking Gretzky’s goal scoring record that much more impressive. Plus Ovechkin missed lots of games due to league lockouts and COVID

    • @mickshealthjourney3635
      @mickshealthjourney3635 2 년 전 +1

      @@eriklakeland3857 Very true: As of right now (4/26/22), Ovechkin missed out on 155 games; 82 from the lockout of what could have been his rookie year, 34 from the 2012-13 lockout, and a total of 39 games due to Covid across two seasons.
      As far as "what if" is concerned, we can look at it one of two ways: Career numbers or season-by-season.
      With a career 0.612 goals/game, 155 more games would give Ovi another 95 goals, putting him just 19 behind Gretzky.
      Season-by season tells a similar story. Assuming that he'd have had career average numbers in 2004-05, he'd have tallied 50 goals in his "rookie season". 2012-13 was solid, as he was on pace for another 23 goals had that season gone a full 82. 2019-20 would have been even better, as he was on pace for another 10 goals that year. Finally, 2020-21 had Ovi on pace for another 14 given a full season. That would give Ovi 97 goals missed, putting him just 17 behind the Great One.
      The season-by-season numbers show just how consistently good Ovi has been his whole career. Given the goals projected to have missed, Ovi would have broken more goal records by now: 2021-22 would've marked his 12th 50-goal season (beating Gretzky/Bossy's 9), his 14th 40-goal season (beating Gretzky's 12), and his 18th 30-goal season, all consecutive (beating Gartner's 17, and beating Gartner/Jagr's 15 consecutive)
      The most insane figure from all of this is that with those games missed and four years remaining in his contract, He'd currently be on pace to finish his regular season career with 1,075 goals: 3 more than the number of goals Gretzky scored in the regular season and playoffs in the NHL and WHA... COMBINED.
      And all this during an era of hockey when scoring goals is considerably less frequent than in Gretzky's time.

    Ovechkin has already surpassed Gretzky's goal scoring record because the modern era that Ovechkin is playing in needs to be factored in when making the comparison. Ovechkin's goal total gets multiplied by at least a factor of 1.4 when comparing to the 80's NHL era back when they were giving goals away like they were going out of style. Not only that, Ovechkin lost one and half seasons due to Bettman's lockouts so you have to add at least 70 or 75 goals to Ovechkin's goal total.
    It's an undisptued fact, Ovechkin is already the all time greatest goal scorer in the history of the NHL.

      Yes. Nobody will ever eclipse Gretzky's point total barring some serious changes to the game. But nobody's saying Ovechkin's going to surpass that. Purely from a goal scoring standpoint, however, it's not outside the realm of possibility. He's only 210 goals behind as of today and he averages between 45 and 50 goals a year. Still a tall order given his age and personally, I don't think he'll be able to break Gretzky's mark, but if he doesn't get seriously injured he'll still finish ahead of Gordie.

      That's a played out dumb argument. Gretzky had raw talent if he was born in 95 he would be even better. Training, tactics, equipment is all better year after year. If it was so easy back then how come nobody else did it.

    Gretzky’s record is crazy. To beat it, You need to be proficient scorer, never get a serious injury, have good teammates, and have a bit of luck at times. Alex has all of this going for him, and he is one that COULD do it. It will be tough as nails, but could happen. And I know Ovi, he’s mostly joking when he says he will retire as soon as he passes the record. He may do that, but it would only be cuz his body is done. He loves this game so much (just watch his emotion when they won the cup), and he will play this game until his body gives out. A great hockey man all around.

    I'm a Buffalo Sabre fan, but also a hockey fan... just a couple things, Ovechkin can beat Gretzky's Goals record.. He's on pace for a 48 goal season this year... He is a power forward that has taken great care of his body and with science and nutrition the way it is now he can play at high level for another 3-5 years ... It is a matter of how long he wants to play....... And if Gretzky played in this era it would a different story with the neutral-zone trap and if Ovechkin played then who know's how long his career would have lasted the way he plays.. The enforcers would be out in full effect and he would be mucking it up with them( taking more of a toll on his body, trainers not equipped with advancements in technology and he would be off the ice more with 5 min majors for fighting, and 10 min misconducts ) .. So each where in the era they belonged and let's see where this show ends at....... I personally like the ride!
