Idk man, I watched that whole game and I was having trouble seeing the ball any time a raven had it. I think more due to the color of their uniforms in that game vs skin tone though, but skin tone probably does play a factor as well, especially in combination with the uniform color. I think it’s an oversight to say that it plays no part at all. There were times in the game when the 9ers defense clearly couldn’t tell who had the ball.

It would be the same thing if it was the same exact scenario except instead of Lamar it was a white QB with black arm sleeves, you wouldn’t be able to get a good read of where the ball is especially on those option plays where you have to guess if he handed it off or kept it I know I was fooled at least a couple of times watching the broadcast. People who try to claim his comment was racist and trying to discredit him because he’s black is just plain wrong if anything he said it was an advantage to be black which is the opposite of racism.

Im not gonna look too far into this however how does someones skin being similar color to the ball not help it blend in a little? Even if its a small difference. From thirty yards away, theres no way that a football against football colored arms would have the exact same visibility as a football against non football colored arms. The football is at least a very small fraction more visible against a background that contrasts it in color. Im not saying it makes a difference or that it doesn't. I'm just saying that you can hide a football better with dark skin that is a similar color to the ball than if you didn't.

His statement is actually true just as its easier to see the laces from the ball itself. I'm a black person who loves black people of all shades, and comparing our shade of color to an object found in our world is not in and of itself idiotic or wrong or insensitive. I'm also a designer who's spent years studying color science/theory and the way the human eye understands what color its viewing is based on the available light in the area, and the color(s) nearby.
