He was asked what he thinks about the protesters and responded with "I'll never respect anyone who disrespects the flag" which is the whole issue with the protesting. It has nothing to do with the military or hating the country. It's literally symbolism to represent that there's injustices that they want to bring attention towards.

You could argue that the 4 groups of people that have been the most oppressed in the last 500 years are: the natives of north america, africans/african americans due to the slave trade, the jewish people and acadians forcibly moved to louisana.
