@@sirioussam05 it is a bit different to the other two, it has more of a focus on human nature which can make deep at points, so it does make sense that it might just not be for you while the other two are!

That scene in Hot Fuzz where the two detectives slide out of frame and then the one pops back in for a second fucking kills me every time. That's just a director who is having fun and loves what they do, and it matters.

That very brief shot sold the movie to me, big time. According to the actor Rafe Spall, the one who plays the detective on the background, his detective partner on the foreground played by Paddy Consadine actually improvised sliding back to the camera shot. Edgar Wright only told them to do something quick and witty while that camera frame stays still and rolling. Rafe was laughing off-camera after he was out of the frame due to what Paddy did, quickly sliding back in and out. Man, it still hits me hard in my funny bone.

After watching HOTD I googled Paddy's credits, I never would of realized he was one of the Andy's with out it. That man can act.
I knew something funny was coming, but I still laughed out lot because I wasn't expecting it to be like this

Did you know he had already thought of the music in the film for a car chase long before he wrote Baby Driver, infact he has an earlier sketch using BBC actors to the same effect years before.

When the cast got the script for the first time, it came with a flash drive containing the soundtrack. Even more to the point, they all had earpieces in while filming so they were all in time

This video just helped me realize how good cinematography is so addicting even when you can't explain why. I love watching Scot Pilgrim Vs The World over and over again and it never seems to get old. The camera pans, sound effects, unique and engaging visuals really change a scene, and even support the dialogue fully. It's like ASMR, both audible, visual, and intellectual.

I love the bit in Shaun of the Dead where he flips through the channels and they blend to explain what's happening
i think its funny when he jumpcuts a bunch of actions together when shaun does his daily routine. its inventive and not boring and it keeps up the pace
Archer almost religiously uses that. Almost every time a scene change happens during conversation it flows into a completely different conversation with that word as the blend word.
There's a Studio C skit like that, I think it's just called Channel Surfing

One good way to tell just how visual or inventive a comedy can be is to turn the sound off and see just how heavily it relies on dialogue.

Works in real life too. Turn off sound and dialogue from everyday life and realize how much of life relies on that.

What makes Edgar Wright movies so special is the heavy-handed foreshadowing that's subtly written into the first act, the ridiculous amounts of details in every shot, dramatic close-ups and shots of mundane things...

@@skepticmoderate5790 Man you are missing out. Adam Sandler is an oscar-worthy actor. The issue is not with him, it's with whoever is directing him. Anderson, Safdie Brothers, hell, even some old school adam sandler movies are pretty good.
But he does so many shitty movies that it genuinely overshadows his real work.

@@MrEddie4679 Punch-Drunk-Love, Uncut Gems and the Meyerwitz stories are Oscar worthy performances from Adam Sandler. Keep in mind, Meyerwitz is a drama/character study of emotionally abusive households. Uncut Gems is an anxiety-inducing gang drama.
“Baby Driver” is still one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen. It may not be as funny as some of Wrights other stuff, but it’s really well done and still quite funny at times. I love everything about that movie.
It's very stylistic. Wes Anderson, Wong Kar-Wai, Wright and Tarantino are my favorite directors because of this

The tv sequence in shaun of the dead is masterful
It's a nod to the radio-era humor. When comedy writers deliberately wrote two radio programmes (e.g. a sports match cast and an audio drama) and the audience got to switch back and forth between the imaginary radio channels, resulted something farce.
I just love the sequence in Shaun of the Dead when Shaun twice leaves his flat to run to the local shop - same scene, single shot, first on a normal day and then on the day after the zombies arrived. That second trip he misses all sorts of apocalyptic visual cues, from various zombies roaming around him to bloody hand prints on the beer cooler and slipping on some blood on the floor in the shop. It really is, isn’t it! It’s amazing cause I never noticed it on my first watch but on rewatches, it was so fun to notice stuff like that! Edgar Wright is great with foreshadowing and honestly, it’s what makes his films so good and fun to watch!
Edgar discussed this in a video for Vanity Fair. He shot the second zombie walk on the first day of filming, because he wanted to send a message to the cast and crew that this is what they can expect. He was also peeved when a crew member (maybe the director of photography?) said this sequence will be cut. His reply? Lard in as many in-jokes as he could.
And the "slipping on the blood"? An improv by Simon. If you watch that spot, you won't see any blood there to slip on.

The cornetto trilogy is in my opinion the best collection of comedy movies that exist.

Leon He Paul's all right, but it was missing a necessary ingredient, Edgar Wright.
Could of done without Seth Rogen and too much American humour.
Brody's reaction to the shark coming out the water unexpectedly is funny to me because 1: it's realistic because I can tell he's internally panicking but trying not showing it and 2: the pacing for the reveal of the shark makes it more dramatic and it feels more earned.
And to think a lot of it is because they couldn't make a realistic shark, forcing Spielberg to improvise a video solution.
The Wright movies are endlessly rewatchable. So many things you can catch years later, it's truly amazing. And thanks for mentioning Arrested Development who also used visual gags at perfection.
Edgar Wright movies are so funny. Their are always hints about the outcome of the movie.

One of the things about the genius of this is that he Write is using the tribal psychology behind “ inside joke” This running joke doesn’t get old because it makes us all connected to the situation. When those of us who have seen all of his pictures laugh. And those who are not “ part of the tribe” identify themselves as outsiders with their lack of laughs. And the “ i don’t get it ..” look . It’s genius.
@@KoriEmerson Each of the fence jumping scenes is good enough to stand on their own though, there is no previous knowledge needed to be in on the joke, they are all physical slapstick that is immediately enjoyable.
That monty python scene always cracks me up
I love the scene where they want to kill the witch.
I love the ending, where they set up for a climactic battle scene, and then the police just show up and stop the filming of the movie.

Yesterday I watched Ant Man (2015) -- I'm just doing an MCU marathon, it's a guilty pleasure, don't judge me 😅 - and when I watched Luis' very concise, to the point renditions of how he got informed about new jobs, I got this "I know this style" feeling.
So when the credits rolled - always watch through the credits in MCU movies! - and I read "screenplay by Edgar Wright" (among others) I had a big AAAAAH moment. ;-)
Just came back to this EXCELLENT video to share this little story.
I’d not call Ant-Man a guilty pleasure. It’s a genuinely good movie and you can clearly see Edgar’s influence on the humor and action. Imagine he directed the whole thing
So that's why Michael Pèna fast talking scene was quite familiar...it is Wright's style
If Wright is to be believed, his version of Ant Man was very different to the one that got made. He left the director/writer role after years of work so his fingerprints are on it but I really do feel like it's a missed opportunity.
The cuts and the transitions seemed so familiar to me when I first watch it, I even mentioned that it was similar to something Edgar Wright would make... And then I saw who did the screenplay!
Truly a master of film and a director that all should look to for inspiration ☺️

I think another major factor is that Edgar Wright movies aren’t strictly comedies, they’re usually also action/horror/genre movies too. So a lot of humor can come out of using elements from other genres and turning them on their head like the World’s End example with the beers and water that uses sharp tense music during the shots of pouring drinks like a horror film would use to build up to a jump scare
I think for good visual, cinematic comedy in America, you really have to turn to television. Key & Peele, for example, is very well directed and understands every aspect of filming comedy, with great cinematography and editing, they realise it is much more than just the dialogue that provides the laughs.
harry lindsey whoever directs key & peele is great. they did a parody of 90's basic cable action movies and they nailed the look.

+Every Frame a Painting Peter Atencio directs the skits and is also directing their first movie "Keanu"
harry lindsey Sorry but i personally think key & peele are overdone.
The first 2 series were pretty good with good skits, while the last series are mostly skits 3-5 minutes long. The whole 3-5 minutes they try to build a pointe, but yet at the end mostly it gets boring and the pointe lost its joke/charme.
Also Peele is a way better actor then key which is visible in facial expressions and gestures. The only thing key is able to do is changing his voice to a girly like high pitched scream that gets annoying after the seconds skit.
Think of meegan, slapass, make-a-wish, consequences, boxing-press-conference

"this is not visual comedy, it's pre-recorded improv"...that's a really good point! that's why I fine so few of these movies actually funny...
totally! I do improv comedy and the humor is in the spontaneity, putting that style of joke to the big screen, scripted and polished just doesn’t work.
If you want, Hollywood comedies aren't more just feature length Saturday Night Live sketches. It originates from the times when big SNL names (Chase, Ackroyd, Murray, Murphy) went to silver screen. Caddyshack, Vacation movies and others were just 80 min SNL flicks. And USA still thinks "this is the only way to make comedy".
He creates scenes like a graphic novel to create a static scene feel then enhances it or subverts it. But you never know which one it is.

The fence gag is one of my favorite running gags in any of Wrights movies and/or the Cornetto trilogy. It's funny but if you've seen Shaun of the Dead where he fails and then Hot Fuzz where he totally nails it and Danny flubs it, when you see the fence in Worlds End you know the joke is coming and the minute he hits the fence the joke is that he's in on it too with the half-fourth wall break of 'ohh nooooo'

Edgar Wright's approach toward creating a film that shows you so much in the most mundane objects. The cinematography is so fresh, the way that shots blend together using new camera angles, the storytelling being so easy to understand through the visuals and the writing of dialogue and actions are so fun to watch. This was probably why I enjoyed watching Shawn of The dead when I was younger, it spoke to me as I love things being told through actions rather than words. Edgar Wright is a seriously underrated filmmaker who deserves way more recognisation.

On the DVD commentary you can tell how much analysis Edgar Wright puts into every shot. Apparently he re-shot the scene where Angel is jogging and first meets Simon Skinner because it didn't match the storyboards, but then ended up using the original take because he realized that the way Dalton kept shoving Pegg toward the edge of the frame made him seem sinister.

Hot Fuzz might be - along with the first Matrix - the movie with the best camera + cutting I've ever seen. Every shot, every transition is a masterpiece. And so are the sound effects.
My favorite of his is Baby Driver. The moment at the very beginning when the robber points forward and says "drive!" and the car goes straight backwards is pure gold.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is another one of those comedic masterpieces. I've always loved the scene with the killer rabbit and the Holy Hand Grenade.
I love how the guard gets killed and the other ones reaction is "oi?"
That second guard had perfect comedic timing in that scene

Scott Pilgrim was one of the funniest movies I've seen just because of the way it was filmed.
The most frustrating thing for me as a Scott Pilgrim fan is I have exactly zero knowledge of film jargon. What I love about the film is always "Well like in one scene Scott forgets he has a girlfriend (I'll try to be quieter)" "Chicken is vegan?" etc. Those are two examples of scenes that i love that make zero sense to anyone that hasnt seen the movie.

Scott pilgrim is just plainly epic
This video just popped up in my recommended and made me want to shed a tear. I first watched this video and borrowed it for part of my senior project in highschool. 8ish years later this has awoken a feeling in me that I thought I lost and would like to recover, the same passion for film and filmmaking that I pursued and abandoned.
I feel like when they did the fence gag in The World's End (7:24) and Simon says "oh nooo," that had to have been Simon Pegg actually saying that like "not again! C'mon, you do this to me every time!" Edgar Wright makes the best movies.
The close up on the puppet in Arrested Development is one of the dumbest jokes i've ever seen. That being said, i'm helpless against it and it makes me belly laugh every time.

I will never understand how so many people hate on The World's End (relative to the other two Cornetto films). Maybe it's not as much of a comedy film as SotD/HF, but in terms of raw film making _quality_, it's just fucking amazing. The cinematography, choreography (particularly in its action/fight scenes), set and costume design, colours and atmosphere, MUSIC, the emotion and storytelling. It's not a constant barrage of jokes, but it's easily The World's End that I get the most drawn into as a viewer.
Unfortunately all that yummy visual goodness isn't enough to make an enjoyable movie. None of the characters were likable.
Personally I disagree about the characters not being likeable. I tried to endweight my list of yummies with "emotion and storytelling", but I think its had the opposite effect and made it seem like an after-thought. I cared a _lot_ for the main group of friends, particularly Gary and Andy. The film really delves into the history of the group, and also devotes a lot of time to building on each individual as the story progresses. Conversely Shaun of the Dead had characters like, I can't remember her name but it's that actress who played Dawn in The Office. Did she add much? And characters like Shaun's mum result in emotional moments but it's just because it's his mum really; I didn't care that much about her on her own merits, it's just really funny how she's oblivious to the zombie threat. Similarly Hot Fuzz has a tonne of lovable funny characters but it's more about the humour, whereas World's End is getting me invested in their _lives_ more. Just different tastes, I think.
(Feels so stupid, me criticising SotD when I love all the Wright films so much. They make most other films look like garbage. I'm just trying to say World's End really puts the work in so far as the character's backstories/personalities go, and there's certainly no shortage of emotional moments between them.)

I think one of the best examples of an Edgar Wright scene transition is from Baby Driver. In one scene, Baby is standing next to a car he has to bring to get destroyed. In the next scene, we see the car getting destroyed while Baby stands in the exact same spot in the frame in the exact same pose. One of the best scene transitions I've ever watched
watch Malcolm in the MIddle, rewatching this old show, I've noticed it has so many visual moments of comedy. One in particular, is when Hal is getting rid of a spider. He rushes to the front door holding it in fear, Dewey opens the door for him to throw the spider out. Hal throws the spider out and Dewey quickly closes the door. Hal then realises he's just thrown the spider on Lois, who was stood about to come in with groceries. It's a genius scene because Lois enters and exits the shot in quick succession for an incredibly effect joke.
Also the joke with the super firework, where they just change the scene to daytime for 2 seconds then back to night, genius >.
If only the story was as good as the jokes.

I didn't even know Scott Pilgrim was by the same director as the Simon Pegg movies! I had a movie binge a few weeks ago and decided to watch Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Worlds End after watching Scott Pilgrim. I guess I subconsciously understood that they had very similar styles, but didn't pick up that it's because they have the same director.

Better visual filmmaking also makes movies way more accessible, especially in countries with a lot of immigrants like the US & UK. Not only are a lot of jokes in modern comedies just bad, but they're pretty nuanced and you have to be quick-thinking, understand cultural references, and be a really good English speaker in order to get the joke when the director wants you too. I think this is why my parents (immigrants) LOVE the Edgar Wright movies with Simon Pegg. It makes me sad when we're watching a movie and the dialogue (especially jokes) is too confusing and my parents can't understand it, and they can't fully enjoy the movie. And they've been speaking English for 20 years! Better visual filmmaking also makes movies more likeable to watchers from other countries. Aspiring filmmakers, please consider this!

exactly this! visual/physical comedy is what often gets my mom and dad laughing the most, especially my mom who speaks less english than my dad. So when a movie incorporates ALL forms of comedy well, not just subtle/mild or straight up overdone jokes/executions of jokes that dont even land for me (and is completely lost on my parents), it can be appreciated by a much larger audience.

FallaciousScotsman did you see how that was made? It was unreal. Dailies were loaded and immediately edited. Almost the whole film was created on set. The attention to detail and the finesse with which it was done was just incredible.

I like all the little details. I couldn't stop laughing at the jogger in Shaun of the Dead. First day he's passes by just jogging. Second day there's zombies all over and he passes by sprinting.
I love the Cornetto trilogy and got my wife to watch them and she only commented "the director is very talented" lol because you're spot on he is so good with his cuts/shots...awesome

@@Johnny-ux7yi And the comics did the story much better since they were a series of six graphic novels, which when put into a single movie made it feel kinda rushed. The "extra life" part at the end of the story felt much more important and made a lot more sense after six books worth of character development. Still I think the movie is fantastic and I don't think it could be made much better if it had to be made into a single film, it just does a lot better if you've already read the comics.
Dylan Dacus i do agree but then again film adaptations based from books and comics are always tricky because sometimes being faithful can lead to problems with the pacing as well as a significant increase of the run time.

@@emmmm1233 I've read the comics after seing the move and only after reading i could tell how really really really fast paced the movie is. And honestly, i started to appreciate it even more. It's condensing a lot of stuff, sure. but it still manages to be a really great adaptation.

When you start to understand film directing, cinematography, editing it does prevent you from enjoying mediocre movies but it also give you the opportunity to understand and enjoy movies that would have bored you before. The secret perks is it also give you an extravagant pleasure to watch very very very very bad movies, they become pearls to your eyes in some ways
That may be so, but it's no drama. There are numerous "great" movies, but we are not easily exposed to them and can't easily watch them, because they don't often play in the cinema. That's the real shame :P

The World's end has some of the best fight scenes I have ever seen. Not only do they have a bit of humor in them but you can also clearly follow what's going on. It's also my favorite movie to show to people with no explanation besides, "it has a bit of a slow start". When the first fight happens, the twist blows their minds. They end up more surprised than Gary
Watched it with my brother upon discoveringg "it's the same guys in hot fuzz & shaun of the dead". when that scene came, we were utterly shocked and in awe!
