  • Alright, so on multiple occasions I have had customers ask me about what do I need now once they have already purchased a calf. This is the wrong answer! I made this quick little video to give you the basics. I know some of you will tell me there is things I am missing. This is just a quick video and list. I will be making more videos talking more in-depth about all the things I use on a daily basis plus everything I use for the 1 in 1000 cases. It is incredibly important to do your homework and research when it comes to raising calves it is not for the faint of heart. Calves die sometimes its inevitable. Others time its you the PRODUCER who killed them. I hope you enjoy the video. All the best - DJ

    Gotta watch buying from some private sellers also, I bought two calf's off of a guy in Port Royal pa back in spring and he told me calves was healthy blah blah, well he got here and was unloading them and noticed they had scours, he said they must have just got it, well they died two days later even with vet intervention. They had scours longer than what they was here.

    Hi I’m front Trinidad I watch your channel a lot, I bought 3 calves 1 is very skinny and defused to drink milk, he picks on feed but is trouble to get him to take the milk at times, is there any substitute for that? Thank you in advance

    • @PowersFamilyFarm
      @PowersFamilyFarm  3 년 전 +2

      Asha, if the calf refuses to take a bottle you have a few options. Wait a day and let the calf get good and hungry, if it's already super skinny this might not be a good option, option 2 which I would do, is tube the calf. Don't give him the option to not eat. Hope this helps. All the best - DJ

    I’m 14 and I want to buy 20 bottle calves this summer the only place I really know I can get them is from our local sales barn is there anything I should treat them with before they walk into our barn on our farm

    • @PowersFamilyFarm
      @PowersFamilyFarm  3 년 전 +1

      Thats ambitious, my hat goes off to you. First and foremost quarantine them away from any other animals you have on your farm. I would then hit them with an antibiotic such as penicillin or something stronger from the vet. Follow that with BO-SE 1 ML and A&E 1 ML for 2 days or so. Give them the best chance. Try to get the oldest calves you can at the sales barn and be very picky or you might have a rough bunch and get discouraged. Feel free to reach out anytime with questions and good luck! - DJ

    • @PowersFamilyFarm
      @PowersFamilyFarm  3 년 전 +1

      I do 1 ml straight down the throat. A&E can be bought at TSC or your local feed store or online. BO-SE is from your vet

      I don’t recall that particular calf. Most likely an auction calf probably starved a few days in the pen (prior to me buying it) but I appreciate the positive input. I’ll take it into consideration.

    • @PowersFamilyFarm

      I didn’t take offense. I tried to go strictly organic remedies at the start. Problem was I really started getting into bottle calves late fall early winter and all the natural remedies weren’t “keeping up”. My thoughts when I made this video are for the first timers. Once you understand the animals and have experience and can identify symptoms early and have a great bio security plan I would 100% agree “organic” or natural farming methods are best. Just ask my goats. All the best - DJ
