  • Just this last week at the SXSW convention Disney Parks chairman Josh D'Amaro blew everyone's minds all over again when he showed off Disney's real retractable lightsaber. What do we know about this light saber? Is it the first time we have seen this? And will this light saber be for sale in Disney parks soon? Come hang out and let's talk about it.
    How much would you pay for this fully retractable lightsaber?

      As it is? No way I'm giving them money. The blade, would bend too easily as it heats up. In a few years, maybe a decade, it may stay solid enough to stand up to how a kid would want to spar with it.

  • @MasterMayhem78
    @MasterMayhem78 년 전 +1129

    The blade is covered in a transparent light diffusing bag of some sort. As it retracts it is essentially smooshed at the bottom. This is why they can’t actually swing it because there’s no structural stability to it, it would just bend over and collapse like a measurement tape with a bag on it. It’s made to look nice, that’s it.

    I strongly doubt this will be able to be strengthened much. Disney R&D is impressive to be sure, but if this blade operates much the way people have suspected for a while then it'll probably be a gee-whiz showpiece level item without any dueling capability, just the extend-retract action. Which, to be clear, is really cool and probably something Disney could sell for a thousand USD a pop, but... well, don't get your hopes up too much.

      my theory is that it's kinda like a long baloon that inflates and deflates. given that you can't duel with that would also make sens. that plus if it uses servos it would have to somehow have somthing that's strong enough aswell as long ennough to connect the servo in the handle to the tip of the blade

  • @Scorpwanna
    @Scorpwanna 년 전 +97

    I think it retracts the same way the toys do, just with servos programed to extract and retract. If you look close enough you can see the parts in the "blade" going down, meeting another piece, and both going down. The servos would need room to do the work mechanically. Seems pretty simple...

In cinematography of lightsabers made by fans in youtube, even in professional work, a Neopixel saber in camera really looks like a real lightsaber, even in the Mandalorian, they use Neo sabers to shoot scenes. this retractable saber has really cool aesthetics indeed, but imagine if its broken, since its a new tech, there will be less than a handful of repairs tutorial and very little people that can fix it. everything that moves up and down makes problem. what happen if dust go in etc

    If I had to build this thing, I'd use an inflated cloth tube of some sort. Something which can diffuse the light evenly and which can be carefully rolled or folded so that it "activates" realistically.
    Install a bright colour LED and a loud lightsaber hum (to cover the noise of the small blower fan) and working lightsaber. Which you can't swing. Which can be "deflated" but not "retracted" as expected.

    I'd probably pay up to $500 for Disney's retractable lightsaber. Even if I can't hit it on anything, it is the closest thing we've ever experienced to a "real looking" lightsaber. When I show people my sabers, that'd be the #1 item I go to. Sure I can do cool effects with my proffie/neopixel but the magic isn't there when I have to put a blade in and tighten it down with an allen wrench.

    Exactly what someone else said, the hilt is ridiculously large like a thermos and I wouldn't want to carry around a big bulky saber even if it could retract like that. I'm happy with my neopixel ultrasaber which I paid $500 for, it does all the things I want it to do and it looks really cool. So I'm not going to be giving Disney any more money over what I pay for Disney TV. I'm disabled and can't go to the parks anymore as I have a service dog and it would not be fair to put him through that kind of environment, besides I couldn't go on any of the rides. But I remember when I was a little boy around 1967 my grandfather would take me to Disneyland all the time and you hardly had to pay anything to go in the park, all the rides had ticket booths at them if you wanted to ride them then they came out with the ticket books you could buy, but we used to go just to ride the teacups, and have lunch and ice cream.

      Good point, but I think the og patent might be "phase1" or gen1. When you make improvements you don't have to update the patent if the idea you are patenting stays the same. One semi easy way to accomplish the flat idea is what is EL tape. Electro luminescent tape or wire is basically a band of glowing stuff that they could roll up. Cover that with a diffuser and badda-bing.

The fact it's retractable is not going to be a cheap function, but you won't be able to do as much with it. Speaking as a sound engineer the sounds could come from the hilt, the lapel or headset mic would be sensitive enough to pick up any sounds it did make.
    From an electrical engineer stand point, it would be easier to make it just come from the speakers then cram more junk in the chonky handle. Accelerometer, speaker, gyroscope, battery, motors, switches, Arduino, and oh yeah the blade.

  • @ThatVideoGuyTom
    @ThatVideoGuyTom 년 전 +1

    As a 3d printing/invention nerd, it looks like it's a car antenna motor with LED wire around it or that electrified paint that glows (EL Paint). The Car antenna connects to a wire on a motor in the hilt that pushes the saber out and back. The shaft is most likely two or three pieces of clear that slide along each other and are incredibly thin so you don't see where they overlap as it extends. All the force/weight is on the aluminum core antenna much like a car radio antenna from the 80s would be. So it's not that hard to actually build something quite similar. I think the real issue you have fundamentally is the lighting. Do you use projection lighting, or do you use LED EL wire/paint? I would bet they use projection lighting because it would be much more even and if you got the walls thin enough it would basically be like those toys that pop out when you swing them. So really, while cool, not that cool

    Hmm, at this point as small and bright as led are these should already be available, rather than a stiff rigid plastic the round part of the blade itself is probably made of some high reflective fabric with extension rods pushing it up and stretching it out as it extends. If I’m correct then that means that no they wouldn’t be able to hit with them as the fabric could tear or the extension rods could snap or the emitters could be damaged. But the extending is still very cool, I’m sure they will keep improving on it.

    The most practical way to create this effect would be to use 2 or 3 hollow tubes that fit into one another. An air pump in the handle would pressurize the tubes forcing them to extend out from the handle. To retract the tubes the air pump runs in reverse sucking air out of the tube thus retracting both the tubes back into the handle.

    I think its a retractable rubber balloon with retractable metal or something metal inside the rubber that when switch on the retractable metal or hard plastic of any kind will erect, you remember the plumber rubber retractable that they are inserting inside a pipe to unclogged the pipe or to repipe the broken pipe, i think that is the principle.

    The "ears" are not pointed the "wrong" way, per se. The standard configuration seem "Empire" on is the indeed with the clamp in the 9 o'clock position, (when looking into the emitter, with ears pointed up at 12 o'clock). The "A New Hope" version, however, is seen in multiple configurations, but is primarily seen with the clamp at the 1:30 position, as is the case here.

    I know how they did the r&d for the lightsaber…it was a continuation of your story. Except one large goon gave the dude a haymaker, then puts his knee on his neck, while the corporate stooge with them bends down and said “well hello there, I just wanted to get your signature giving Disney all of your research, prototypes, and all data…and that you did this all of your own will for free.” The guy then had his arm pulled out from under him with a pen in hand, and had him sign it.
    Before the ink had even dried, the stooge nodded to the big goon and he twisted his knee to the right breaking the guys neck. Then all hard drives were taken and all personal accounts were deleted. With just a note left saying: “hello. I am tired of doing internet things. I am going to live in the forest from now on, please do not attempt to contact me. P.S. you should also visit Disneyland as much as possible in my honor and buy as many Disney products as possible.”

    "It works with air, it's a kind of balloon that inflates and retracts itself. You can also see that they move very carefully once it's extended. Rey picks up another lightsaber from the ground that is solid, because you can't have a lightsaber duel with a balloon, it wobbles in all directions."

    6:06 Actually, your comment about the bunny ears is wrong. They are supposed to be different. You're comparing the ANH version of the prop to the ESB/TFA version of the prop. The clocking on activation box was on the other side in ESB and that carried over to the TFA/TLJ prop as well, so technically they got that right.
    Sorry, I just have done way too much research on the graflex hilts.

    How much would I pay? Well, so: to make your own: 2x tape extendable measures, some batteries, a strip of LEDs, a motor, some other electrical wires and buttons and such, some sort of case for the handle (PVC or metal), and finally some paint and other bits 'n' bobs - I reckon I could make one (using all new parts) for $200, minus the money for the hours I'd charge a client for labour. If I got secondhand parts, I could probably get it down to $90 or so. N.B. I *am* a metalworker and woodworker though.
    I'd pay double that $90 (or just over) for an official Disney version then considering they're still working on it. This can't be the final desired result.
