Not all heroes wear capes.
@dylan foley where u from
proceeds to call a fucking weird german/russian empanada a hamburger.
@dylan foley Not remotely true. Modern "Europeans" with Gernamic roots came from about Central Asia. We even have Roman records tracing some of their migrations, as well as archeological evidence. Native populations - Basques, Sammi, etc. were displaced and marginalized.
Even the Celts didn't come from Europe.
And to move in, the Gernamic people killed.
Open a book and learn.

Brad was probably the best guest on this series. The perfect personality compliment to the geeky professor and his fangirl protégé
Like onions, meat and cheese
My grandmother was a Volga German. The bierock (we just called them "cabbage buns") is a staple tradition in my family, we like to make them for birthdays, and everyone has their favorite topping to put inside. You can also get them at a chain restaurant called "Runza," but it doesn't beat home-made by grandma.
In North Dakota the German-Russians from the Crimean region have something similar called the "Fleischkuekle", it's deep fried instead of baked and I have never seen cabbage in them.

Bierock, also known as Runza! Saw it and immediately knew what was up. Temperature Tuesdays were the best. Never forget your Nebraska roots!
Though one important thing to note as you mentioned the Cornish Pasty. Unlike the others, the pasty was both a meal and a dessert and fairly bigger than the others, you would make two seperate fillings one of meat and potato and a sweet filling usually apples or other fruit. Then the pasty would have pastry to seperate the two fillings and the sweet side of the pasty would be marked usually by sprinkling it with sugar. The reason being they where made for Miners, you would probably spent the majority of the day underground and having a full meal when so deep underground was practically impossible.
If you go to Cornwall there are bakerys that still make the traditional version to this very day.
This episode literally made me want to go get some Runza. The Bierock is an absolute legend around these parts, everyone just calls it a Runza though!
Yeah, when they said it was only something you'd find at church functions, all I could think of was Runza.
Grew up in nebraska and Runza was the only thing I could think of when he said bierrock.
It IS a Runza! You can get them all over Nebraska without going to church!
Ive live in nebraska my whole life and we have a family recipe for Runza's and ive never heard them called Bierocks before lol
Nebraska born and raised and always called 'em Runzas. It's like calling facial tissue a kleenex. Or hook-n-loop velcro.
I can't shake the feeling that they did this New Jersy quiz just so Alvin has something to do in this episode.
He seems like a real jabootch
George Motz is an awesome person and I love his setup, knowledge and ability to mimic any burger. So good.
Everytime I watch anything with Brad in it I end up with my face hurting from laughter. Too funny and wholly likable. Great video gentlemen.
I'm SCREAMING RUNZA- Literally the chain restaurant of bierock.
For real.
At least say it right!! BEER-ROCK. Not b-rock...
THANK YOU!!!
00:00 Brad perfectly describes what i feel when watching any episode with George Motz in it.
I love how there's no doubt in my mind that all of them are completely blazed and I'm here for it
The Runza truly is a legend in NE region (pre-dated the start of McDs inception)
The bierock (or at least a close cousin to it) is sold in Nebraska, in a chain called Runza! It’s their main sandwich they sell.
"You guys go ahead, I've already had a few, today... just kidding"
Sure George, sure
"you can only find these at church functions" umm there's at least 1 Runza per square mile here in Nebraska XD
YES NEO GO OFF!!!
Just about to comment this lol
When he said that i thought Runza had gone under xD
They acknowledge Runza at 8:25
I grew up in Lincoln, lived there almost 40 years. I've never heard this called a "Bierock". Ever. I even worked for Runza for a time when I was young. No one ever even mentioned that word. I worked all over SE Nebraska and NE Kansas. I've never heard it called that, even at church functions. If anyone wanted to avoid calling it a "Runza" because trademark, it was always just called a 'Kraut Burger'. Now I want a Runza.
Gotta be one of my favorites videos both of brad and George!!
Brad back again with the “briogge”
I wish he'd look at the word. "ch" does not make the "zh" sound.
And I hope it never changes 😂 "Sour-douuuuughnuts."

As someone from Nebraska, I don’t know anyone who considers it a “burger” but I get it. Fun to be represented

If you from Nebraska especially Omaha you call it a Runza
It's like calling a Philly Cheesesteak a burger... Just not correct
Ey, Nebraska gang. The Runza is not a burg, but they made it clear that it isn't, it's a weird cousin, or a hot step sis.
@@thefolder69 More like calling a Chopped Cheese a Philly Cheesesteak. It's close but not quite. Personally, I would have made and seared a patty (just to get color on the outside), then put it in the dough whole, so it was like a burger cooked into the bun.
I;m so glad you mentioned Runza while explaining the Bierock. I know so many people who have never ever heard of the chain and don't realize how great that burger actually is.

An amazing crossover.
The mention of a cornish pasty made my heart swell
Had a Runza sandwich for the first time a few months ago after travelling across Nebraska a few times. The bierock was damn good but their onion rings are gangster.

Always down to listen to more burger history with the Burger Scholar himself!
The brock is know more as a runza in Nebraska and Iowa. It is a regional chain of restaurants who make those sandwiches.
Omg I miss brad leone!!!! I need more of him
Brad Leone is the man.
Y'all should've thrown some salsa on the bean burger. Everywhere I've eaten on of those bad boys in San Antonio they always add some to the burger and to me thats what really drives the flavor of the burger home.
Motz and his voice...I could listen to all day...why have I never watched him before... History and food and fun are stuff I love. Also I clicked because of Brad and stayed for the content.

The "Bierok" is also called "Kraut Ranza." It's a German sandwich made by cooking beef, sausage, onions, cabbage, sauerkraut, and spices. Then wrapping that mix into bread dough and baking. AMAZING food found at almost every German grandmother's house and church potluck
Also called a Runza and sold at a local fast food chain called... Runza.
Its not German, its Russian or Eastern Europe and no, German Grandmothers dont cook bierok. Ive never seen one, and i live in Germany over 30 years now.
Didn't realize you knew EVERY German grandmother.
My hometown has a bierock shop that’s been around for over a hundred years
The bierocks make me smile.
I grew up with something very similar, out of a Mennonite cookbook. .... Russian Beruchas.
We cooked down the cabbage and onions more than here, but same type of beef pocket with cabbage & onions salt & pepper......the recepie didn't have cheese in it but the cheese keeps it from drying out and gives a lot of versatility (from cheese wiz to smoked Gouda or Havarti so many are so good in em)
Other than folks from the area we lived in where we bought the cookbook I have never found anyone else who had ever had them......I have been introducing friends to Beruchas my whole life all over Canada 😁😁

I'm proud of him, must be tempting to eat heaps when you're constantly surrounded by all this good food

So I'm a Nebraska native with pretty strong Kansas/Nebraska German roots and that bierock is pretty spot on. They're usually a bit more rectangular (i.e. Runza) but they're not really (at least not that I've seen) a church food. Generally when my family does bierock it's in the fall and my mom and grandma make it in bulk and divvy it up and freeze it for lunches, etc. Awesome to see First We Feast showing Nebraska food some love. I don't know if they've done it yet but it'd be awesome to see them do the original Blackstone corned beef Reuben (the real original Reuben, get outta here with that pastrami nonsense New York).

I never knew the name for the bierock, my family and I (a lot of German heritage on my father's side, my grandma makes a huge batch of these weekly) always made them and just called them krautburgers. Best thing ever!
