How to Cook a Hawaiian Loco Moco Burger with George Motz | Burger Scholar Sessions

- Burger Scholar George Motz is here to set the record straight: A real homegrown Hawaiian burger is NOT a beef patty topped with pineapple and ham. When locals crave a burger, they order something called the loco moco. Technically a 'burger plate,' this regional icon is a burger patty placed on a bed of rice, drenched in gravy, and topped with a fried egg. A popular late-night order at diners, the loco moco is one of George's favorite burgers to eat. And now's your chance to make one at home. Here is your master class on how to make Hawaii's own loco moco burger.

If you could go on a *burger road trip* with George, where would you go?
Texas
I’d go to my hometown by Chicago and probably just get Culver’s. They are probably the restaurant with the lowest price to highest quality ratio among fast food chains, and there’s no need to be lavish with spending.
Man now I want Culver’s
New York
Haha krplus.net/bidio/pNpqlqeGZa3Ln4Y
Hamburg, Germany.
Best thing to come out of quarentine. Solo George Motz.
👍💚
For real, I love this guy
the anti Nick Solares
Yes! Everyone else detracts from the point of the videos, esp Alvin 🤮
Definitely needs longer episodes
George is one of the best things to happen to First we Feast. So stoked every time I see one of his videos.
Have to agree. For me George has already tied Hot Ones, and I suspect will shortly be my all time favorite.
Truth.PREACH
Hell yes.
@@RPRosen-ki2fk We need George Motz on Hot Ones!!!
Agreed
-Hey dad, we made you breakfast for your birthday
-That's a nice gesture, but I'll have to disown you
-Why? What did we do? =(
-IT'S TOO SWEET
ieshi akerman I love pineapples
@@IslamicTalksPodcast me too, brother. I can eat those until my palate starts bleeding
I just ate so I'll come back to this video in a few hours when I feel desperately hungry
KAKAKAKAKAKAK this is wonderful! PRANK! It is terrible! I looked in the mirror and saw something UNPRETTY: my face. KAKAKAKAKAKA! But I am happy agayn because I have TWO HOT GIRLFRIENDS and I use them to get views on my videos! KAKAKAKAK!!! Good day, dear setj
Exactly what i do to give myself an appetite
@@AxxLAfriku wtf
Seriously, nothing “Hawaiian” served in Hawaii automatically has pineapple. In case you’re there and want some good Loco Moco, one place to try is Kenekes in Waimanalo. Man, this video made me so hungry. Great job! 🤙🏼
Canadians - will put pineapple on pizza and burgers.
Winters are obviously far too long,
I love the local foods in Hawaii- so many variants of other cultures of foods slammed together- for example: The Spam Musabi, which is sold in every 7-11 stores on the islands. And The Maunapau (slightly sweet Steam char sui Pork Buns). Spam’s not even Hawaiian 🌺 made- however, the locals have fine tuned using it 😛👍
Re-edit: “manapua”
Tante’s on Ali’i Drive in Kona has ono Loco Moko bro 🤙
@@expfcwintergreenv2.02 do you HAVE to use the 🤙 emoji?! Haha I thought the 🤙 was only a movie thing you guys seem to even do it in text 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Keiki Alani Frazee manapua* but yeah, the buggah is bomb
This has quickly turned into one of my fav shows not on just first we feast but on KRplus like George really makes knowing about burgers fun and entertaining 😀
3:33 Yes. 2am loco mocos at Zippy's are where I've had some of the most genuine conversations with my closest friends.
Aloha George! Hawaiian here 🤙🏽 just wanted to say you did a great job on that moco! I suggest adding mushrooms or asking for it "paniolo" style the next time you visit Liliha Bakery!
Cheers brah

I love how your little side stories and anecdotes plus you are very interactive with the audience
Bc of George I will make a ton of burgers now
Shoutout to Ma'ono in West Seattle for their kickass fried chicken and also loco moco!
Got to love the spirit of someone like George. Doesn't give a shit about color, race, ethnicity, or nationality. What kind of hamburger you serving up is the only thing he's judging, genuinely. So pure
Thank you Sir! My trip to Hawaii was canceled due to the state shutdown. When I reschedule and go I’ll be sure to seek this out there.
Every time you guys upload that determines my lunch.
that is definitely a burger that I would love to try all of the burgers you've shown so far I would eat nothing on them that I wouldn't and just thank you for doing this it's an amazing show I love watching this and I love learning about cheeseburgers and hamburgers alike
Lived in Hawaii for 5 years and one of the things I miss the most is the food. Loved seeing your take on the delicious loco moco!
I need more of this man and I need more regional history about burgers. This is so good.
Yessuh bro, I could eat loco mocos all day. So much greatness on a plate
Rainbow Grill in Honolulu was the best moco loco I've had in my life
Absolutely love this! Grew up getting them from Cafe 100 in Hilo whenever we'd visit my grandparents. Gonna have to make it for dinner tonight now I guess!
I miss cafe 100, used to go to the Aiea location alot
Da Hell you talkin' 'bout? Only get one Cafe 100 and it's in my hometown of Hilo, HI. Stay two minutes away, walking distance from me. You trippin' if you tink get one in Aiea.
I'll have to try Cafe 100 the next time I'm in Hilo. I've always eaten breakfast at Ken's House of Pancakes.
bufordt42: Ooooh, stop that. Ken's is way to overpriced and overrated. Check out Hawaiian Style Cafe the next time you come. If you want a good Loco Moco, go to Koji's!
@@raiderfrankdatank Ya, Cafe 100 was never in Aiea, but the Heights Cafe was, and used to be the BEST place to get mac salad, except their version of Loco Moco was called "The Hungry Man" ;P I miss The Heights soooo much D:
I really hope that one day I will find something I love as much as Motz loves burgers!
I truly loved this one!!!!!! Food great and the dialog was awesome!!!!!!!
I’ve ALWAY been a burger lover.... this channel has inspired me to become FAR more a knowledgeable burger maker/consumer loaded with knowledge of regional situations regarding THE MOST EPIC BURGERS! Much live my people!!
Amazing video thank you George keep up the good work !
That just sounds good.
I live here and can vouch that it is delicious. It’s super easy to make too honestly, I’d give it a shot when you get the chance. You won’t be dissappointed
Best burger show now thanks to George Motz! Keep it up!
That sounds PERFECT for someone like me from Puerto Rican heritage. You got your mixture of many styles from the tropics or from America. Rice, burger, gravy (or other toppings of preference) and on top with an egg. THAT SOUNDS PERFECT FOR CHILL PEOPLE.
Always yummy food and you’re funny as hell to watch thank you sir.
Always a tasty treat to watch these videos.
That egg actually did look perfect. Couldnt see any unset white and the yolk still looked so delicate. Love this show. George is the man. Keep it up first we feast
Loco Moco is FANTASTIC for breakfast too.
Get you someone who looks at you the way George looks at every burger.
Drooling with anticipation and love.
I just adore this man
Motz, you are a cooking and presentation god brother! Keep 'em comin' and I'll keep watching 😁
Epic as always George!
Always drooling over these videos with George
The best
I love how george is getting shout outs from so many different channels that do burgers
Between George and Sam the cooking guy not only is my cooking better but I laugh my ass off. My woman just shakes her head. But she does love my burgers. Just saying
Kam Bowl in Kalihi Valley had the best Loco Moco I've ever had. Their gravy was bomb!
Some of the best food related content right here. For me, personally, on par with hot ones. Keep these coming guys!!!
I love George’s videos, they’re my go to videos when I’m suffering from anxiety.
The Loco Moco has been a friend of mine at home for a few years now. I am so glad you went Oklahoma style with the onions, I can't help doing most of my burgers the OK way.
Love gorge need more of it please
Big shout out to Saimin Says in Kent, WA! I miss you guys and your loco moco! 😭❤️
This guy is a God! This was so good. And that gravy recipe was one of the best things I've ever made.
How great and how delicious it looks
George is awesome as always, but I really appreciate the editor's work on this one. Great job Mark.
I hate fried eggs; but when I eat loco moco, it is a must. I make mine with a mixture of burger and sausage. It gives it really good flavor from the fat and seasoning of the pork.
And Aloha Shoyou is a must for that gravy
when I lived in Hawaii used to love this with teriyaki burgers to add flavor
Love this show
I think he finally found the answer to how pinapple found it's way on so many foods. It's Canada... Probably someone from Quebec went to Ontaria and ordered his burger entirely too impatently. "one burger, tout suite! And the line cook thought "I will show him tout suite!!!!"
Please MAKE THESE LONGER!!!
when I was stationed in Hawaii used to love eating these things at all the drive-ins around the island. some also add mushrooms
Love this guy
this looks amazing
Best hangover food ever.
I made these for my family after watching you make them with Alvin. So good!
I love this guy. I don't think I need to explain why. I just love this guy.
In case anyone was looking for the intro/outro music, it's called Welcome to Hitsville by Gabriel Lucas.
Cheers!
The yolk is what really ties it all together for me!
best series
This is epic, great episode - Loco Moco rules!
This is my go to. So delish
Wow that looks scrumptious 🤤🤤🤤
Went to Hawaii a little over a year ago. Never heard of this dish. Ordered it from the L&L near my friends house. SO AMAZING!!!! Torn between this and Kalua Pork as my favourite
Why not both? This Hawaiian prefers it.
giving George his own show was the smartest thing FWF has done in a while. Hats off to Motz and long live the shower beer.. I mean Burger Show!
I had a loco moco for the first time at a Hawaiian joint in Alaska of all places. Ordered it for the name because in spanish it means crazy booger. It was great. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Love Loco Mocos!
I love this guy
How did it take so long to give Motz his own show. He’s so knowledgeable but such a delight to watch....esp when being an awkward dad.
More than ever right now we need to remember where we came from. Already the love of burgers dude. We must unite for delicious burgers!!
im not a fan of onions but the way he did it just hits different
More Motz needed!!!
Hello and thanks for the shout-out to Ontario, my home and native land 😂 B.C. Is wonderful, so’s New Brunswick, but here’s where I’ve chosen to be all these years 😍
George Motz is my Spirit Animal
Happy to see it. Great moco! Thicker the gravy better the moco.
Bro I've been eating/making these for a long time. I adore them. A local place called Aloha BBQ here in El Paso introduced me to them in high school.
Man. THANK YOU for not doing some pineapple burger bullshit. The loco moco is absolutely one of the most iconic Hawaii foods. Love your interpretation.
You can sense the Pacific Island vibes here- when I was volunteering in the Fijian rainforest for a month, a) they had lots of rice, obvs, but b) they would have lots of fried eggs, but with chopped onion fried into the egg, like you did with the burger! V cool stuff
More of these videos pleeeeeaaaaase
i use brown gravy mix, and substitute the meat with spam if i'm poor, which i am. one of my favorites foods my lad o7
Hey George,
I'm liking your First we Feast daliance. Very informative 👍
Ever heard of an Aussie burger?
I guess this isn't the show for telling you how to make the accoutrements, but George is making that gravy look real good.
in Nanaimo BC, there is a Burger Bus,that makes a burger with Grilled Pineapple and they put on a Grilled Ham Steak and Onions....IT IS THE BEST. BIG.MESSY AND DELICIOUS. YES.
who ever edits this show kills it.
I live in Hawaii. I work at a local burger chain. We serve grilled pineapple on burgers ALL the time. To locals and tourists alike
no.
doesn't change the fact it originated in Canada and we also serve pineapple on burgers here in Jersey. he didn't say pineapple on burgers don't exist in Hawaii
God I haven't had a loco moco is so long. That looks amazing.
I've had a pretty awesome burger life living in Hawaii and Oklahoma. I used to wolf down loco mocos at a paintball field, I think it was kapiolani.
looks delicious and i love that Ruby Motz gets the camera operator credit.
he needs his own channel; Burger time all the time
Big fan of show
Bought your books
KEEP 👏 THIS 👏 FORMAT 👏
i could eat that every day and be happy. wow.
Had a few of these at Teddy's in Honolulu, easily one of the best burgers I have ever had!
I fell in love with loco mocos when I went to hawaii as a kid. I want to go back so bad :(
As someone who has worked at a Hawaiian restaurant, I can attest to the Loco Moco being REALLY REALLY GOOD. TRY IT
George is my guru 🙌
Made loco moco last week. It's killer with some sweet peas and sautéed mushrooms as well as the onions
It's also a good breakfast and usually my first breakfast when I visit my parents in Hawaii.
This is basically a jolibee budgersteak. I wanna try this presentation and adding onions now!
Just made one, yummmmmmm
