But what makes the food in anime look so incredibly delicious? On this episode of Gochi Gang, Reina Scully sets out to have a cartoon-themed feast with anime obsessives Zack Fox and Thundercat. But before Reina can dig into two iconic anime dishes-pancakes and omurice-she’s meeting rapper and comic book-lover Denzel Curry for a manga shopping spree. From a drawing lesson with manga artist Misako Rocks, to a deep-dive into titles like Food Wars and Sweetness and Lightning, Reina is about to embark on the ultimate anime food adventure.

Wait I love this, I feel like they’re really onto something here with the connection between hip hop and anime, I’d always felt that way but it was never articulated so well
I love this choice of line up to talk about anime with. Anime and Hip hop has been such a low key fusioned culture for such a long time. With how most the guests have mentioned, Samurai Champloo, I would say it's thanks to the legendary Nujabes (RIP) for his great addition to hip hop with OG lo-fi sound with a dope beat that's been recognize by even bboys at the time. Anime was even more available in smaller networks compared to Cartoon Network and Teletoons. Reina could have talked about anime with almost anyone, but having these hip hop influences talking about it shows how hilariously and incredibly anime culture has taken itself in the west. Not to say that it's only in hip hop culture, but just that it's really meant for anyone from the nerdiest nerds, to the most gangster or ghetto habit characters out there.
Man when Denzel brought up Big O and Zoids, it reminded me when I was a kid and would wake up at 4 and just watch tv and adult swim would still be on showing these.
I remember reading an interview with Thundercat when he was in the studio with Erykah Badu he would just play Naruto Ninja Storm all the time.. :) love you Steven!

I keep coming back to this series. I love food and anime and Japanese culture, but Riena really sells it as a host. She just has so much joy and appreciation for the culture that she is exploring and talking about and it brings me back to it, especially when I am craving certain Japanese foods.
