My guess is how they butchered his character. He had an potentially interesting arc of being a stormtrooper turning good, but they just kinda made his character into a stereotypical sidekick character instead of developing it further in the movies

Well, I fully agree with you that Boyega proved beyond any reasonable doubt that he can (and really did) hold his capsaicin like a boss. And I'm a white Austrian with Hungarian and Silesian (=Czech/Polish nowadays) roots, so I'd say it's safe if you would give that bias of youse a wee break (at least on this one). ;-))
And by the way: while the Wakandan accent in the films with Boseman was based on Xhosa, Wakanda does have two other official languages in the original comics beside the fictional Wakandan which are... wait for it... Yoruba and Hausa. I.e. two languages which are actually spoken in Nigeria.
So the punch line is: if Boyega would play Black Panther and would use a Nigerian accent, that wouldn't even be a retcon, but actually more true to the original. :-)

His arc was the biggest disappointment I had for the trilogy. I cant stand 2 and 3, but after watching awakens I had hope for his character development. I was furious when they made his character a black troupe because they clearly didnt know what to do with Finn. I had no hope for Rey or Poe.
I'm old school: my Dad took us to see the original trilogy in the theatre. As an adult, I went with my best mate to see Phantom Menace....and the minute they wasted Darth Maul's character, I knew there was no hope for the franchise, no matter how beautiful Ewan MacGregor is.
One of the most underrated episodes! John Boyega is so real and full of character! Very entertaining!! 17:25 - just an amazing moment when he points out that Sean is ignoring him and going on with his question! That is pure gold!!
