True words. We have a neighbor who is a retired mechanic and avid hunter, and he takes great care and pride in helping out the whole block with repairs. Cars, water heaters, electric generators, lawn mower repair, power outages, missing roof shingles, loose stones in a walkway, whatever you need an expert pair of hands with, he's available to help. And that's brought the whole neighborhood together. Now we have one guy who does upholstery across the road, my mom is a retired nurse and dietician making meals for people, someone has a toolshed with whatever power tools you need, my dad has woodworking equipment, and another guy around the corner likes to fix watches and tinker toys. Kids take their bikes over to him and have him fix it up, and the kids reciprocate by doing yard work or shoveling snow for the neighbors in winter. It gets you thinking about the people around you when you offer to repair something for them. It builds relationships with the people that live around you. We can't lose those connections or that craftsmanship.

I am part of the "twin" village and Nick's dad was my 8th grade Social Studies teacher --- his dad was and still one of my favorite teachers that I ever had. I see a lot of his dad in Nick.

Hearing about this show from burnt keester on his podcast, I expected little. I waited 4 years to check it out. It really does break down the wall, and the questions are very well thought out/researched. And bonus, it’s funny as shit.

@@flugplatz21 I still think that even if you’re aware of how deep they dive into other people’s backgrounds, as a guest you’d probably be still taken aback being asked about something you had not remembered happening until the question was asked; or asked about a topic you aren’t usually asked in interviews and therefore you’ve subconsciously deemed to not be that important.

Doesn't have to be physical, but mental too. If you can fix a car, or a sad person, or a sick person, you are a better member of society. You don't have to be a doctor or a mechanic but you just need to be able to fix some things.

People are building stuff, people are coming up with ideas to clean up the mess humanity has made, it's just that the gov. isn't funding green innovation and technology. You can clean a small beach with some friends but you can't clean the trash islands in the middle of the ocean that are only getting bigger each day. Many engineers would love to be working on sustainability projects but apparently, it's not valuable if it's not profitable.

The arrows carved into trees was a real thing. I lived in NH and it was a huge point of pride among historians. Our trees were the strongest and the straightest, perfect for masts. If you were found felling a King's tree, you were put to death or had a hand chopped off in some cases. (I could be confusing a couple facts. It's been a while since they closed the Heritage Museum)
