The Last Tortilla Kings of Brooklyn | Food Skills

- Bushwick, Brooklyn was once an epicenter for Mexican cuisine in NYC, earning the nickname the “Tortilla Triangle” in the process. Today, Mi Barrio Tortilleria is one of the only tortilla factories that remains, churning out hundreds of thousands of tortillas every day.
In this special edition of Food Skills, owners Miguel and Nelson Carrera give First We Feast an intimate glimpse into Mi Barrio’s decades-long history on Flushing Avenue. Together, the Carreras have successfully transformed a struggling tortilla factory into a booming food-service empire, supplying goods to neighborhood taquerias, as well as Michelin-starred Mexican restaurants.
Here, as Miguel and Nelson tour Mi Barrio’s production facility and its surrounding neighborhood, the brothers share the details behind their family’s uniquely American success story.

That's the sort of comment that makes youtube worthwhile.
Wow. These guys saw a successful business that was failing, strengthened it's weak points and just truly respected it's employees. Inspirational.
He had to add "that's legal" at the end of the sentence. LOL
which probably means that they do illegal too, probably bring in pejote along with the tortillas
Cydonius1 You're such a Debby downer bob
i lived across the street from this place; right next to the cheese factory! awesome to see the old hood and what went on inside
Doesn't the early morning beeping trucks wake you up? I was wondering who would live across the street there.
@@GFkilla17 it did! our bedroom was facing the street; part of the reason we only lived there a year and a half.
Please be nice to them and ask them to use gloves when touching the tortillas. I worked in one in Texas and the City makes you were them.

@psalm and what's wrong to be proud of your roots ??? Is who you are at the end of the day like YOURSELF if you aren't indigenous to this country your roots will be from another country or even continent and you should be proud because your ancestors DNA runs thru you even if you born in China.

Ah the Mexican culture is so chill and friendly. Walk into a Mexican business and you instantly get the homely vibe, also great food. I'll leave you with the lyrics of a classic Mexican work moral song.
"All week long, Boss-man say,
Work Mexican work
Sing your song, earn your pay
Work Mexican work
Work, Mexican
Sweat, Mexican
Toil, Mexican
It's your lot in life
While people play in the sun all day
Work Mexican work"
Thats so cool to know, thanks for sharing bud :)

GREAT JOB GUYS !!! NEVER GIVE UP GO FORWARD, EXCEL AND IMPROVE WHERE YOU CAN....
Prime example of the American dream....
It's hard but still possible
Rick Martinez from Bon Appetit. You may talk a lot of smack about machine made tortillas but this is what a real American made tortilla is like. Fresh, custom made to a chef's specifications, and from a company run by professionals.
Exactly, this is how it is made, no different than with store bought maseca from the supermarket, except it has time to sour for a day or two on the plastic. It's like using canned tuna for sushi, sure it works, but it tastes very bad compared to real fresh ground corn. The problem with tortillas is scale, you can't really scale, so fresh nixtamal you will only find in mom and pop tortillerias or restaurants, which mostly don't exist in the US, or they used processed flour like this place. Even grabbing the tortillas fresh of the machine will be very inferior to fresh ground.
Raised in north mexico. Great film. Had my mouth watering.
Love seeing the personal side of business. Was really cool seeing the process and care behind those delicious tortillas.
oh shit food skills is finally back whaddup
Barrios need a QC manager because all I see are a bunch of people handling fresh tortillas with no gloves and wearing rings, I'm like wtf they get health inspector in their and they'll get shut down faster than a taco gets soggy. not to mention the way they move fresh produce with other products that shouldn't be close in the vicinity.
Love their attitude!
I really like how this video was made.😍💪
🇲🇽🇲🇽 jimmy kimmel Tortilla maker, jaritos and aguacates distributor by morning. Comedian by night! And I think I saw Guillermo there too with a pallet
I feel they came in like a bigger gangsta and took over the business. Hence, no one messes with them haha
This mini documentary was remarkably inspiring.
I wish them well! I love this. Support local!!

I love seeing buisnesses and how they start. I'm currently have a lawncare company that I started when I was 13, I'm almost 17 now and still going at it. Sometimes it seems easier to just go out and get a normal job but things like this are inspiring
Don't get a normal job always be your own boss
Jimmy Kimmels Spanish cousin making tortillas. Good shit.

Near Hispanic store
Depends on where you live, I've not seen that brand of tortilla in any of the stores I go to.
