  • From a delicately battered piece of tempura to a crispy slab of tonkatsu, Japan is a wonderland when it comes to fried food. In this episode of Gochi Gang, Reina sets out to explore the heart of Japanese fried fare-and there's no better companion than former Man v. Food star Adam Richman. Between bites of pork cutlet, Adam and Reina discuss everything from Japanese puns and good-luck rituals to Adam's own routine before heading into food competitions. But before Reina fills up on tonkatsu, she's heading to Secchu Yokota for an unforgettable tempura experience with chef Atsushi Yokota. From the origins of batter frying in Japan, to the lesser-known tradition of eating KFC on Christmas, Reina is about to embark on the ultimate Japanese fried food adventure.

      It seems that with Japan being so formal, especially in this sort of interaction she had with the chef, there are very predictable things that they are going to say to eachother. For whatever reason in an everyday conversation, you will hear very similar things talked about, in a very familiar manner. I think its rooted around tradition but I'm not very sure. This was one of the big things I noticed when visiting Japan.

    • @ali-amaza
      @ali-amaza 4 년 전 +11

      Ive been told that I sound a lot nicer when I'm speaking Japanese, even if it's informal. I think it has something to do with honorifics and respect. Like you know when someone is speaking in a ride way because it sounds so much more harsh.

    • @weaselsdawg
      @weaselsdawg 4 년 전 +9

      A lot of how words are differentiated is based on pitch. Think about the difference between like present and present, as in a gift and the act of showing something. That shape of the word is important to Japanese and one of the trickier things for people who are learning it as a second language. Using a wider range of pitch helps make it clear what's being said. There's also a massive spectrum as far as formality is concerned, and you can say pretty much anything in a few syllables or a giant fucking paragraph. Also most of the other replies to you I see here range from a little wrong to just plain stupid, so take them with a grain of salt.

    Adam's such a chill guy and was very eloquent with how he described Japanese-style frying; it really emphasizes the subtlety of the technique and making the food taste delicate despite being cooked in grease. Good stuff.

    For three years of my life, I lived right across the street from the best Japanese tempura shop in North Carolina. It was owned by a little old couple with a million grandchildren. They grew many of their own vegetables and probably made no money because of the market. But I ate there five times a week. Maybe more. I lived on vegetable and shrimp tempura. I loved every bite. I will treasure those memories. I hope they're still around and still frying!

      It's not that unusual tbh. Most people who speak two or three very different languages sound completely different. Languages like japanese or french have a different intonnation, so your voice sounds higher. And esepcially japanese uses a lot of "bridge sounds" like ah, huh, mmm and so on
      I speak 4 languages and my voice goes higher or lower depending on the language.

    I love how expressive people are when speaking Japanese. So much more interesting than people speaking English and staring at each other dryly while the other person talks. You can even see a difference in Reina's demeanor when she's speaking English vs. Japanese, and she's generally cheery and expressive regardless.

    Tempura Master treats the humble asparagus spear with equal respect and passion as he does with prestigious scallop. It speaks to the cultural attention of doing the absolute best possible work regardless of the job at hand. So deeply impressive.

    I'd love to see an "easy to make at home" episode or at least "home made Japanese food." Maybe get Binging With Babish to guest star.

      @@nom6758 Totally. I'll watch like 3 yt video, then head to the kitchen. Havingthe real Japanese ingredients from my local Asian market helps, but isn't essential for someone that just wants to cook and have fun. I prefer spice, so it's Japanese/Koreans fusions most of the time.

    Reina really seems to enjoy conversing in Japanese...whether it's with a Japanese chef or Adam Richman. The words and the body language are really interesting...and fun to hear and see. Reina is such an enthusiastic host...thank you!

      Reina was born in Japan, then moved to the East Coast of USA with her mom when she was a small child, and she went back to Japan every summer and attended school while she was there on vacation. She basically has two native languages and I'm so fucking jealous. I consider my written English to be quite good, but if you hear me speak you'll notice a heavy accent and that just sucks.
