    Ranking starters with position players is so hard these days because nearly all of the top starters have serious volume concerns. So much variability with guys like strider, mcclannahan, and the aging Mets aces.

    • @cjcable6995
      @cjcable6995 년 전 +5

      I agree completely. When I think about player rankings, I tend to separate out hitters and pitchers. Pitching WAR is not nearly as useful as hitting WAR so there really is no cross stat to compare them. And their value is just so different with the way pitchers are used today. Still think Foolish does a pretty strong job of including enough pitchers in there and I sort of mentally separate his ranking of pitchers out from the hitters anyways.

      @mattrussell4880 년 전 +1

      @doublersports2866 년 전

      I think you have a point, but Strider and McClanahan have two of the highest ceilings of any young pitchers in a long time and of course the Mets aces are legends.

    • @rodstone1597
      @rodstone1597 년 전

      Strider's only volume concerns come from his less than stellar command at times. The braves let him go over 100+ pitches in his last 6 starts of the season last year, contrast that with McClanahan only getting 2 games all season with only 100 pitches. I think strider can definitely be a 200 inning guy in a full season of starting if he can stay healthy, especially if he can fix his minor command issues even a little.

    It’s so crazy just seeing this now - Tucker would be considerably higher on the list, Chaz McCormick didn’t even make the list, but he is really doing well this year. Altuve was injured, but is batting incredibly and got his first cycle! I know this was predictions before the season, so no arguments from me. I’m just proud of my Astros. 🧡

    Congratulations on finally leaving the clown car this year and not ranking him third like you did last year. I’m fully expecting Ohtani to belt out 40 dingers and have a sub-3.0 ERA. His wins is in question with the Angels’ double A bullpen. He should be the easy MVP though as long as MLB doesn’t supply Judge with juiced balls like they did for the home run chase last year.

    Thank you for saying that Jose Altuve didn't cheat during the scandal years because people keep saying "Altuve cheated to win MVP and cheated in 2019 to hit the homer off of Chapman". And to those saying he should've said something while it was happening clearly don't understand baseball. You don't snitch on your team for anything(maybe some bad crimes but that's exetreme)

    I definitely respect this ranking more than MLBN, but I have one minor (and I do mean minor) nitpick of some analysis. I think it's still a bit presumptuous to assume juiced ball theories are the most significant cause of increased league wide offense. Nonetheless, even assuming league wide offense was down last year because of an "un-juiced" ball, league-wide environment is not a solid basis for extrapolating individual player performances. For instance, I wouldn't suggest that Devers improved because his numbers didn't suffer with the rest of the league. I think that would be a decent basis for arguing that his talent is not as environmentally sensitive as the rest of the suggesting his offense is more reliable than other hitters. I don't think that necessarily changes your ultimate conclusion about the value of the hitters you described with respect to '22 league wide stats, but that sort of nuance may or may not prove significant in the future.
    I definitely agree with you about injury proneness when it comes to position players, but I'm more skeptical when it comes to pitchers. Now I wouldn't treat Edwin Diaz's freak injury as grounds for being injury prone, but I do think deGrom's injury history speaks to the stress he puts his body through when pitching. Unless deGrom were to reduce his load this year, I have trouble believing that the force of throwing is ridiculous stuff would not cause his body serious stress. I would still say that one should not generalize injury history with being injury prone.
    I thought I would leave off with a couple of interesting thoughts about players on your list I happen to pay close attention to.
    Alex Bregman has had a statcast max exit velo from 105-107 for most of his career (it's actually shockingly consistent from year to year). In '22 Bregman had his first healthy season in a couple of years and had a stereotypically strong season. However, his max exit velo in '22 was recorded at 109 mph which leads me to believe Bregman used a good amount of his rehab stints bulking up and has found a bit more power. While I'm also skeptical that he could hit 40 homers again, I think Bregman may surprise us with a new powerstroke this year.
    I strongly agree with your analysis of Carlos Correa. I do wonder if the shift restrictions will add a new wrinkle for Correa's defense. Generally, Correa's greatest value as a shortstop comes from his arm which has allowed him to position deeper than the average shortstop. His deeper positioning, usually shallow outfield, has allowed him to compensate for his slower movement. Because the shift restrictions will require Correa to be positioned on the infield dirt at the pitch, I wonder if the value of his arm may somewhat diminish relative to his agility simply because he won't be making as many throws to first on groundballs to shallow left and he'll have to cover ground faster being closer to the plate.

    Problem with Cole is his fast ball while fast does not move as much as say Christian Javier's. Therefore he gets barreled up more when a mistake is made. I saw that alot with Billy Wagner, especially in the playoffs. He three 100 but it was straight as an arrow so he would give up some big homeruns.
