In the Meyer Shipyard in Lower Saxony, the world's first natural gas cruise liner is under construction: the AIDAnova. There is room for up to 6,600 passengers, a television broadcast studio and a theater on the 337 meter long ship.
Needless to say, production of the giant ocean liner is a technical and logistical challenge, and comprised of approximately 15 million individual parts.

@@flyagaric007 Personally, i doubt it. Getting rights to all the docs on this channel costs a lot of money and KRplus income is very small unless you have millions of views per upload. Besides, KRplus is well known for it's inability to automatically monitor non-music piracy. Takedowns happen only if the rights owner a) notices and b) bothers to report the show.

I was onboard when it was going thru finishing built, it was amazing.
A good example on how you can make a nice documentary without excessive drama. Like notice how the days remaining to the deadline are mentioned but there is no "any delay could be catastrophic", "will the engine be ready on time?", "a mistake now could spell doom for the project", etc etc

It showed the bit where they were celebrating the start of a new ship, and I had to see what the comments would say...
Actually the first cruise was on december 2018, so she had a couple of years to earn some money to the company before the world went crazy.

I've been building a high-end custom homes and log cabins for 38 years and I could not even imagine the headache it would be to try to manage that build in that amount of time. PS I Love Your solution of getting the tugboat out. It's nice to see real pride in construction like it used to be when I was actually working. Good job man well done.
This truly is a marvel of imagination, design, engineering, technology and construction, and stands as a testament of the collective and individual skills that made it possible!
There isn't any aspect of this vessel that wouldn't benefit from an in depth documentary of it's own, be it the dome, theatrium or the fresh water making capabilities!
It is impossible not to be fascinated, impressed and overwhelmed at what it took to create this floating marvel in such a remarkably short time!
My ideal cruise would consist of in depth 'behind the scenes' tours of all the things that make the ship possible, from the domed roof to keel, bow to stern and port to starboard!
Thank you for this fascinating insight into this beautiful vessel!

It is amazing that that Engine is assembled by just two guys in 25 days.
Well... to my mind that's one of the least amazing things about this project. Those guys knew just what they were doing, had great tools for the job and everything they needed.... it would actually be a pretty cool job!

Wow, I am blown away. It's insanely incredible how all of this was engineered and put together. That's one amazing looking ship, with so much technology on board.
And I have to say, this has been the most fascinating ship building documentary I have ever seen. With most others the only important thing seems to be all the unnecessary and fake drama. So a big thumbs up to this channel for bringing solid videos which we can all enjoy to watch! :)
So basically it took 2 years to film this documentary. Great stuff and learned a lot. It's just insane to think that even though the ship is built in sections and there are many subcontractors all of the piping, wiring and trim fit precisely. How you even being to co-ordinate this process from start to finish is insane but I'm glad there are people smart enough to do this.
It's insane. Just sourcing the materials, parts, etc, the amount of work involved is hard to overstate. Obviously it's a team effort, but still, coordinating everything... I feel insignificant after watching this.
No unnecessary "drama" included. Great documentary!

Great documentary, I like that you identified challenges, but did not over dramatize them, or that you didn’t create false drama’s.
I love cruise ship building documentaries! I watch every single one I can get my hands on. There aren't many out there, but there are a few, and I will try to watch them all!

Agree, with regard to the actual construction process, but don't forget the level of safety and redundancy required for building an aircraft. A ship will generally survive fine with multiple malfunctions. An airliner, not so much. I guess they are just hard to compare.
I can honestly say that I enjoyed watching this documentary a second time even more than I did the first!
How utterly incredible that this could go from a set of plans to a licensed, seaworthy commercial vessel in such a short space of time!
The level of time management and coordination is mind blowing.

When you look at all the switches, all the valves, all the lights, circuits, wiring, plumbing, fittings, and etcetera, is anyone else damn impressed the whole thing actually works, and works well?
OK first off, hats off to the amazing engineers, and construction staff, heavy engineering at its best, and OK it is powered by LPG.
But most cruise liners are disgusting heavy polluters burning the most appalling fuel.
Wish we could use this amazing talent to solve the real problems we face.

I was onboard this ship when it was still being furnished and decorated. It was in Eemshaven, HUGE BEAST.
Also something to know: While the ship has the ability to run 100% on LNG, it doesn't because it costs the company a pretty penny :)
48:00 The food for the crew on AIDA is widely regarded as one of the best in industry, whereas other companies don't particularly care for the look or the taste and only do a bare minimum. I have so many horror stories to tell aboard many of the companies I worked for.
LNG is competitive, remember this ship seems to take takes diesel fuel DFO as alternative to LNG but not heavy HDO, 40% cheaper than DFO but requiring large fuel treatment and care. I guess LNG is not available in all ports and sufficient amount...yet...
@@philgooddr.7850 The company always has the ability to order refuel of LNG in most ports. They don’t do it because it’s expensive.
@@serious_filip522 Wasn't it also insanely expensive to give the ship the ability to run on LNG? You would think they must use it sometimes else why bother wasting all the money on it?
Plus no LNG engine can run all on LNG. To start up more cylinders, they feed it a richer mix of fuel to kick start the combustion. I wonder why they don't fit bigger turbos to make a smaller engine and boost performance but then again ship weight seems an afterthought.
Mind bogglingly complex and amazing. Nothing but respect and awe is deserved.

Don’t feel bad, there are entire nations of people achieving nothing. One continent of nations which shall remain nameless has more natural resources than most nations on the planet but their people are uneducated, superstitious and living hand to mouth.
Fun fact, AIDAnova's sistership, the Costa Smeralda was finished last week. Made in Meyer Turku, the finnish shipyard Meyer bought a few years ago. The next one, Mardi Gras will be finished in september probably.

@@tjtrent2351 I hate watching sports and when I have gone to races, the best part is watching the mechanics in the pits. My career is building, repairing, and designing. My hobbies are similar and I do compete in shooting competitions which I load my own ammo for, but I get bored watching competitors do their runs. With all of the documentaries I have watched, I have probably seen enough to cover many of the systems on the ship.

1,106 feet long, 138 feet wide, 183,858 GT, those are some seriously staggering figures for a ship. The fact that these three colossal ships can be operated at speeds up to 17 knots (not very fast, but cruise ships don't need to be, they operate on a schedule and the ship is just as important as the destination, maybe even more so) while producing near zero emissions is absolutely groundbreaking and astounding. Granted, there are larger ships (see Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas at 1184 feet OAL, 215.5 feet beam, 228,081 GT and Harmony of the Seas 1188 foot OAL, 215.5 foot beam, 226,963 GT), but they're run off of conventional diesel electric powerplants. These ships are as well, but they can also be run off of LNG and that's what makes them marvels of modern shipping. Thank you for taking the time to document the building of this amazing ship. It was really interesting to see how it was constructed.

from a point of view of someone that loves anything to do with engineering, although not clever enough to be an engineer, this blows my mind with the tolerances to 100th of a millimetre on them huge engine crank shafts, and even putting them together while they are floating absolutely amazing engineering from all, including electricians, pipe fitters and floor layers. hats off to every single one of them,

LOL Let's just say that it makes ALOT of power and torque! They're typically only used to generate electricity for use by the azipods (the rotating pods that hang under the stern of the ship that contain the electric motors that turn the propellers, gone are the days of propeller shafts and rudders, all maneuvering is done via the azipods on modern cruise ships. I haven't seen the propulsion design of this ship yet, but that's how Oasis of the Seas was constructed.
Update: Yeah, the ships uses two azipods...I had to double check myself so I didn't look like a moron giving out bad information...
Drive: diesel/electric: 4 Dual-Fuel Caterpillar/MAK diesel engines. Total installed power 61.760 kW. - Propulsion: by 2 ABB azipods - power each 18.500 kW by variable rpm. depending on frequency - Max.Speed: knots.- Service Speed: 17 knots

What a fantastic documentary. I salute the people who designed this ship and also those who built it. Also, I am super impressed by the size of the building in which this ship was assembled.
I cringed at the thought of the heating bill when they opened the door to take the first floating section out in the middle of winter.

The Eiffel Tower: How was it built? ... As the tower grew, moveable platforms were propped into place on the intermediary levels, not only to enable the workforce to weld the latticework together but for their own safety.
I remember they used cylinders filled with sand to level the legs, let out sand slowly and the legs would drop until they were level
