Honestly, GFriend has been getting popular gradually and steadily... Those who have stuck with them throughout the years support them not just because they find GFriend cool or pretty but because they genuinely perform with passion and are very consistent with each comeback. They've certainly passed the stage where an artist is too worried to try something new because they'd lose their popularity.
It's more about them growing up as artists and taking on those challenges.
And let's appreciate the fact that looking at their discography GFriend is probably one of the very few groups at the top that has at least that one song which could appeal to any random listener!
