Basically. I cringed when she said "tacky" and he corrected her with expressionist. A lot of their experts love the time period they studied or worked in, so it's disrespectful to knock the style like that. You could call it colorful, fun, eccentric.. all would get the point across without being rude.
Yeah I was kinda offended she wasn’t embracing the moment he’s known for, but she’s critiquing it in a very narrow minded way
I saw that, too. But we chalk it up to being young and tactless, forgive & move on. He's the expert and he helped define the era. Sadly, I'm not sure how one defines the current era and is it even fashion? It seems every era has a definitive something, like 50's poodle skirts etc, 60's tie dye etc, 70's rainbows and unicorns (& ugly wide collars and leisure suits).

I know people mock the '80s, but it was a time of expression, a time of big ,bold and out there. I prefer it to today's fashion of casual drab and fear.

I love this series but Steph needs to learn how to show the looks off better, like don't slouch so much and for formal looks try to pose a little classier, and be more open minded to different decades. The 80's is obviously Montgomery's passion, and I don't think he too much liked it when she called the look tacky.

He obviously didn’t like the comment. But he is not her boss. Her job is to give her reaction and experience in the clothing, not to appease him. Mr. Montgomery did not invent 80’s fashions. He really has no right to be offended by someone else’s opinion of a day glow green leg warmer and headband set.
I agree, like think before you talk people like she said that right to his face and Montgomery’s passion is for 80’s style and she called it tacky right to his face, it’s one thing to be rude and another to have an opinion without being bratty
As an 80s teen, some fell flat for me, like they were "inspired by" the decade, but didn't look quite authentic. The sweater look, rocker chick, and Madonna look were spot on though. Well done on those.
I just remember the whole decade was kind of 'cheap and tacky' but also expensive.

I was glad to see the Madonna look on you. I thought you had a strong resemblance to her even before I watched this video. I noticed it in the iconic 50's looks. Especially when you dressed as the starlet (Madonna did a Marilyn look in the 'Material Girl' video) You looked like her long lost daughter!

The aerobic look was WAAAY off. It should have been a super thigh high cut leotard over the unitard, and the hair should never have been in a 60's/70's style flip. Gloria was an 80's icon, but (just like Anna Wintour now), her hair was decades in the past.

I loved the 80s, that was my decade, but people tend to exaggerate the outfits now. Yes, you might have seen some of these looks, but they all weren't necessarily that commonly worn, at least not for very long....unless you were in a music video that is. I remember a lot of girls emulating pop stars. They did get mocked if they went too far though. The big hair, makeup, shoulder pads and jewelry, yes, definitely.
My parents are full 80's kids, but the culture clash highlighted their need for me to be a 'pretty' girl. What I find interesting about the exaggerated outfits is that although they all include time-heavy makeup and hair, they do look...bad! As in they look like they're for the wearer, not the viewer. That must have been something. Would your experience agree?
Why have someone who neither knows anything about nor likes anything about the 80's?

I lived thru the 80s, was both a makeup artist and a model during that time period. These are ridiculously tacky and cliche outfits that were NOT the norm of either high fashion or every day person looks. Why can't anyone get the 80s right? UGH. They always choose the most extreme and weird looks.
They don't claim that it was. It's "iconic" looks, referencing the movies, icons, and pop culture of the day.
@@Erudessa22 thank you for pointing that out. My problem is that in many other videos made by other groups, magazines, influencers, and so forth they all seem to hone in on the same sorts of looks. Not a lot of people were wearing neon, and that trend was actually quite short and mostly limited to socks and earrings. Most people did not wear gigantic bows in their hair. Many wore bows, but not huge, oversized ones, for example. When other eras are presented, many of the looks are more accessible, less ridiculous, or cartoonish and stylized. I wouldn't even consider all these looks iconic. But I appreciate the response.

Grew up in the 80's, so I loved this! Montgomery did an excellent job pulling the pieces together to represent each look & Steph looked beautiful in them.

Stef, I just found your videos and I'm having a blast! I grew up in the 60s/70s and was a young adult in the 80s; holy smokes your looks take me back! What is funny is that I thought at the start of your video, "Wow, she could be Madonna's daughter!" I think I wore every one of those styles, except I had great cheekbones and always played them up. Make-up in the 80s was fabulous! I think I heard you say that some of the looks were coming back in (what!). Alas, what was once chic on me is now antique on me. Loved your 50s video, too!

For the prom look, we would have had matching, dyed shoes, definitely no big rose hairpiece. The dress I had for prom was a lot of lace.

Now I’m a middle aged lady in her pj’s with the elastic waist drinking a cuppa Barrys tea, but back in the day I was rocking my jumper tied around my shoulders, and my plaid skirt and loafers (listening to the Smiths, The Cure and The Stone Roses) I was eclectic that way!!! x

Dude! I lived the 80’s and don’t think I’ll ever be able to leave the 80’s. The huge bow in the hair is awesome! I’m a goth so I’m totally into all black including huge bows. Madonna in the 80’s is one of my favorite style icons.

I lived through the 80s and I sure don't remember any girls wearing their hair to look like Gloria Vanderbilt. Everyone had short shags like Sheena Easton or moussed big hair with a ball of bangs like Jessica Hahn.
