Just get a little sand box with a lid the kid can use. Either that or get a box/ small container go outside and fill it with a bit of dirt for the kid to use.
Or get kinetic sand and a thing so the kid could dig mess free or almost mess free.
I recommend taking ibuprofen for cramps, it works very well! It was originally invented for rheumatoid arthritis.
