Since I’ve started taking Korean class in school, I have no idea how people mix up the Korean, Japanese, and Chinese languages. They sound and look totally different.
Even like that I find it terrible that some do not see the differences of Korean, Japanese or Chinese. Before calling foreigners Chinese just understand that there are people that speak English but are Mexican (for example) wich doesn't mean that if you speak a language makes you the person from the specific nation. If they do not know your language just use Google translate for God's sake even if its not accurate.

I loved Gabriel Iglesias' video on Cuban speakers vs Mexican vs Puerto Rican. As an English speaker with only a poor, rudimentary grasp of Spanish, idk if this goes for other Spanish speakers or not but I would add that I find the Peruvian accent incomprehensible (at least I am pretty sure it was Peruvian). Mexican Spanish is by far the easiest for me to understand due to its relatively slow pace and taking longer to say certain syllables that would otherwise be easy to miss. I feel like it is maybe the Spanish equivalent of an Indian accent in English? I do totally agree with his suggestion that even if you don't know Spanish, you can definitely tell some Spanish speakers apart just by how they talk, I think that is probably every language with a large enough geographical spread to have various accents.
I studied Spanish, our teacher was from Spain. She used to tell stories when she went as a guest to some relatives for a few weeks in the US. It was all great, until some snobby lady told her to "Go back to Mexico" because she was speaking Spanish. Smh. Our teacher was having fun dinner at a restaurant before it was ruined by a confrontational Karen.

A simple way to tell the differences between the 3 languages. Korean: tiny circles and straight lines. Japanese: curvy lines and straight lines, and some Chinese words. Chinese: a complicated combination of mostly straight lines.
people in Spanish feel the same, since it is almost a continent speaking the same language plus an extra country (spain), although I already knew you were Korean because of the letters you use greetings and new subscribed :)

One thing I learned from being stationed in Camp Humphreys (Jan2020-Feb2021) is that never, EVER, call a Korean person Japanese. That's like calling someone who's Moroccan(Which I am btw 🇲🇦)to an Iraqi.Or an American to a Russian.

Many people don't know how to understand these languages so sometimes they get confused but that doesn't mean they're ignorant . It doesn't mean that we are disrespectful to the languages.I live in India, and usually foreigners get confused between South India's languages like Tamil or Malyalam for example.That doesn't mean they are disrespecting.

@Vanda Bhahardwaj @Damien I understand some people might not know but if you all look closely, the characters are different. Maybe instead of seeing a non English sentence and just assume it's Chinese. Maybe learn about other cultures and how their language looks. That also goes both ways. Assume a Korean sees Spanish and assumes it's French. Don't you think they would benefit from looking deeper into both cultures instead of just writing off the language as Spanish.. It's ok not to immediately know the difference but it's 2022 on the internet, you should be able to use Google if you're unsure tbh.
@Damien Except for English the other language is non-mainstream. Hard to see TV and Netflix. And there are too few speakers in these three languages. But, the number of speakers in Korean, Japanese, Chinese is about 1.6 billion. And a lot of series, movie, animation etc. Can come into contact.

I like how you put this issue in a slightly funny way because the 3 cultures you mentioned are different from each other. There are similarities but ultimately they're different. I just hope people learn world geography a little more.
From physical appearances, it’s understandably hard for other people to tell the difference. But Korea’s writing system is very distinctive from Chinese and Japanese letters.
@@tcjgaming9813 honestly it's hard to mistake even when they are talking... Accent also different, I don't understand Korean but I can at least tell if I'm looking at Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean or Japanese Same with Spanish, Portugese, French, Greek, Russian, Dutch, German etc they are usually really easy to tell apart, though I still struggle to identify some of the languages but rather where abouts its spoken. Arabic and Hindi stand out as well, but I don't know much about forks or anything like that. Just where abouts it's spoken, so I can usually tell what language someone is speaking if it's one I recognise but doesn't mean I can understand a word they saying. Kinda strange how the brain can be like that tbh But in saying that I've heard conversations enough in most those languages to be able to get basic context of many conversations in public using body language with Chinese and Japanese. Can't say same for another other languages

there was one thing that made it easier determine the signs japanese, chinese, and korean people use, it was how different korean “letters” (could say kanji but it sounded weird, comment down if i should use it) were from the others, though being neighbors, even being part of china before, it still surprises me how much they changed it even from chinese influence, and the japanese just copied then rebuilt the chinese one’s a little bit (some of this might be miss-information but comment down what you think, appreciate the thought)
Also, between "signs" and "letters" I think the more universal term you are looking for is "characters." In this context, a "character" can refer to any complete symbol used for writing (such as a letter in the Latin alphabet). You seem to have a really good grasp of English in general though, my apologies if such a comment is out of place due to you being a native English speaker. I have a very poor grasp of only one other language, and that is Spanish.
I had this same thing happen to me a lot, except it is the other way around. There was a girl with a BTS photo as her profile who replied to my comment (I was replying to another chinese person in the discussion thread), saying "Sorry I don't speak squid game." I'm not korean but I literally felt offended just from that comment alone...

One thing I learned from being stationed in Camp Humphreys (Jan2020-Feb2021) is that never, EVER, call a Korean person Japanese. That's like calling someone who's Moroccan(Which I am btw 🇲🇦)to an Iraqi.Or an American to a Russian.

Many people don't know how to understand these languages so sometimes they get confused but that doesn't mean they're ignorant . It doesn't mean that we are disrespectful to the languages.I live in India, and usually foreigners get confused between South India's languages like Tamil or Malyalam for example.That doesn't mean they are disrespecting.

@Vanda Bhahardwaj @Damien I understand some people might not know but if you all look closely, the characters are different. Maybe instead of seeing a non English sentence and just assume it's Chinese. Maybe learn about other cultures and how their language looks. That also goes both ways. Assume a Korean sees Spanish and assumes it's French. Don't you think they would benefit from looking deeper into both cultures instead of just writing off the language as Spanish.. It's ok not to immediately know the difference but it's 2022 on the internet, you should be able to use Google if you're unsure tbh.
@Damien Except for English the other language is non-mainstream. Hard to see TV and Netflix. And there are too few speakers in these three languages. But, the number of speakers in Korean, Japanese, Chinese is about 1.6 billion. And a lot of series, movie, animation etc. Can come into contact.

I like how you put this issue in a slightly funny way because the 3 cultures you mentioned are different from each other. There are similarities but ultimately they're different. I just hope people learn world geography a little more.
From physical appearances, it’s understandably hard for other people to tell the difference.
But Korea’s writing system is very distinctive from Chinese and Japanese letters.

@@tcjgaming9813 honestly it's hard to mistake even when they are talking... Accent also different, I don't understand Korean but I can at least tell if I'm looking at Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean or Japanese
Same with Spanish, Portugese, French, Greek, Russian, Dutch, German etc they are usually really easy to tell apart, though I still struggle to identify some of the languages but rather where abouts its spoken. Arabic and Hindi stand out as well, but I don't know much about forks or anything like that. Just where abouts it's spoken, so I can usually tell what language someone is speaking if it's one I recognise but doesn't mean I can understand a word they saying. Kinda strange how the brain can be like that tbh
But in saying that I've heard conversations enough in most those languages to be able to get basic context of many conversations in public using body language with Chinese and Japanese. Can't say same for another other languages

there was one thing that made it easier determine the signs japanese, chinese, and korean people use, it was how different korean “letters” (could say kanji but it sounded weird, comment down if i should use it) were from the others, though being neighbors, even being part of china before, it still surprises me how much they changed it even from chinese influence, and the japanese just copied then rebuilt the chinese one’s a little bit (some of this might be miss-information but comment down what you think, appreciate the thought)

You seem to have a really good grasp of English in general though, my apologies if such a comment is out of place due to you being a native English speaker. I have a very poor grasp of only one other language, and that is Spanish.
