My heart hurts. I am from South Texas about 4 hours San Antonio. And words can express how deeply saddened by this. I am a mother of 5 kids and I can’t imagine what every parent is going through. My prayers to all those affected. Rest In Peace sweet little angels.

I'd like to offer an explanation as a high school student currently. No, not all schools have guards. My old school had no security at all. The school I'm in currently allows bonds to be tied between guards and students. They allow friendships between them. We don't have metal detectors, and we have one "officer" with the state police. That's all. This sh** is too easy for people to do.
Edit: the more people that care about the safety of kids in school, the more can be done about it. Stay strong.

U cannot arm ever building in america like its the pentagon. Thats not practical. Plus the kids usually are planning to die so they go in with guns a blazing. They could just wait til school is over and shoot up a bus. The problem is the ease of access to guns.
Ask them why you walk into a court building downtown and feel safer than you do at school.
The fact that law-abiding adults can't carry guns in schools while all schools don't have at least 2 or more armed resource officers on staff to deter/eliminate threats is criminal. You're basically advertising to malicious people that they're free to murder children.
I think if it doesn't happen in the school itself these people will just find another way. Schools are not the issue or solution here
How this shooter was able to walk in that building? Usually at any school anybody even parents they have to ring the bell before they get in and the receptionist has to be sure who is the person and this person has to show an ID. Also they suppose to have two doors at front of the building in case somebody wants to shoot they can lock one or both doors! Why not start investigating about the low security at this school?

Am I confused or did the police actually chase him into a school? Could've easily used lethal force and prevented this from happening. You're chasing an individual that just shot his grandmother.

I am absolutely heart broken. I also live in South Texas, a few hours from SA & a mother to an 8yr old boy, who is my whole world. This just hits so close to home.. all those sweet little innocent babies, thinking they were just having a normal day.. almost to Summer.. I just can't imagine the pain & sorrow the parents, families, staff, are going through right now :'( 💔 We are suffering right there with them.. This didn't have to happen!!!!

I agree we need more changes. We can start with the reopening of federal mental institutions and make it easier to commit minors with violent tendencies. We can pass laws that make social media adult-only spaces and ban platforms like TikTok that mainstream mental illness. We can make sure schools have better security and armed guards on duty while students are there. There are a number of things we can do.

When I was in grade school all we needed was a yard teacher who was basically, a parent volunteer settling disputes over hopscotch. Now schools require an entire military presence just so kids can come home alive.

Texas 5/24/22: Two obvious problem's noted here. He walked into the school, he hinted on social media. My solution lock school doors, put a police office with on duty officers present during school. Put in metal detectors just like the courthouse has, see something on social media turn them in. If you want to take away all the guns, start cleaning up the high crime areas and gangs. How about putting in some ideas that help prevent the next incident.

As a father, I have a duty to protect my family. A firearm is the best tool to do this. I'm sure that there are many teachers who would like to have that option to protect their students. The left loves to blow things out of proportion - "assassins with weapons of war should not be roaming our schools!" You want a common sense answer to the problem? Let the teachers who want it, get trained and let them carry concealed. Properly done, a teacher could carry all year long and the students would never know it.

Hard to believe there were no red flags upon this kid purchasing a rifle. These kids are falling through the cracks of society. The firearms system needs revamping. Why can’t Congress put their big boy/girl pants on and get the assault weapons out of the hands of people who buy these deadly weapons, the right to carry should NOT include guns like these. It’s ridiculous to buy this type of weapon for protection. These guns should not be sold for self protection, they are being used by the wrong people for all the wrong reasons. Pass a ban on sales of assault rifles. I believe in the right to carry but these types of guns are way over the top!!!

New Mexican highschooler here, America is known for having the freedom to own guns without issue we need to teach parents and all gun owners better gun security and I feel no one under the age of 20 should be able to buy a gun nor any elements to such weapon the human brain is not fully developed emotionally til 18 years old but we do not reach mental maturity til 20 to handle such a serious weapon i love guns they are really awesome weapons but this is too serious to joke about
