The "rot" is oxidized oil. Some are really bad and have a chemical smell and taste even in things that are considered not expired or recently expired items.

Sweetos are definitely one of my faves and the first time I had them was when I was pregnant (which was in 2017). So I don’t know if it’s only seasonal in some regions or what but I physically remember buying them in 2017 and again in 2018 after having my daughter.
