MacBook Air i7 (2020) - Long Term Review!

  • The 2020 MacBook Air was a nice refresh to Apples laptop lineup. It had a new magic keyboard, a lower starting price, double the starting storage, and new processor options. However, is the Core i7 quad core processor version worth the $250 upgrade or should you just stick with the core i3 or core i5 version... or maybe buy something else?

    I really want Apple to give me a reason to get the Air, but the 13" Pro just makes so much more sense even if you're just a casual user.

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster 3 년 전 +8

      Yeah. If the gimped cooling had a benefit, like it was much quieter than the Pro, that would be one thing, but it's hotter, louder, and dives back to base clocks fast, and you don't save much weight or size really either. Just stretch for the Pro is what I'd say to most.

    • @samgraves2
      @samgraves2 3 년 전 +9

      Not really. I'm never going to use smth like premiere pro or video editing. I would just grab the $899 version of the Air.

    • @NonsensicalSpudz
      @NonsensicalSpudz 3 년 전 +3

      @Cameron Yazdani actually its not that much lighter.
      the Pro, CPU is much more powerful, its actually can run at its rated specs, and maintain its boost, it doesn't get pinned at 99C, its 100grams heavier.
      i7 doesn't mean better than i5.
      My i5 Quad Core in my Pro destroys the i7 in the air
      the Pros i5 is a U series chip higher spec in general
      whereas the i7 is a G series cheap, built for low power laptops, and low performance thats its usage

    • @NonsensicalSpudz

      @@samgraves2 I mean thats kinda a reason, but I would call the base Pros, editing machines they're still just typical laptops

I don’t do video or photo editing and will be using it alongside my iPad Pro for my upcoming MBA (so in summary I’ll be a student again). A MacBook pro would have been a waste and I loved my Air from 2010 that got stolen.

    Hi Greg. Would you recommend the i5 or i7 for writing (novels, short stories), emails, watching KRplus and movies and storing and reading ebooks? Right now I have an iPad 2 (2011) which is only 32GB storage. When I first got it I downloaded lots of apps then deleted them as I started writing novels. Now I only use MS Word and Kindle apps and use all other websites (social media and other sites) through Safari. I have books stored in PDF format and other general PDFs. My iPad is slow as my iOS is obsolete now and I am considering the Air because of its design, weight and specs. I think I fit your general use example but I also do a lot of writing and listening to ebooks as well as blogging. I was able to manage my KRplus channel from my iPad 2 using free apps for video editing. So those are all the details on my use case. I use my iPad often during the day multiple times a day and will do the same with a Macbook. I have never had a Macbook.
    I'm thinking i7 or i5 with 8GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. I would like the faster processor and am not sure if 16 GB RAM is too much for my use case (it's an expensive upgrade where I am but i7 is not).

    Same here Greg!! I bought my i7 (16gb) Air when it first came out. It frequently stalls/freezes- disallowing me to load webpages, continue project(s), downloads, etc. I find it soooo frustrating to use it. I also frequent the web/KRplus constantly looking for reviews affirming that I wasted yet-another $1,000$ on something that "appeared" simply too good to be true.

    Hi, great video. What's your take on laptop cooling pads for the MacBook Air 2020? Not got the laptop yet and have heard different things about if one of these is needed or not. Some people have no problems with overheating while others do. Particularly interested in either Thermaltake Massive or KLIM products. But as I have never bought a laptop cooling stand I really don't know what to pick.
    My use case is writing novels and blogs as well as book reviews as well as KRplus, Word, Pages and watching movies online and listenining to ebooks downloaded to ereader programs. Daily use, often hours a day. I have an iPad 2 for which I hve a tilting wooden stand but am going to get my first Macbook. Is a cooling pad or laptop stand better for my use case? Looking for fans that are silent or as silent as possible as don't want too much noise if the laptop fans kick in.

    I have a 2015 MacBook Pro with an I7 quad core. My MacBook still rocks and I am very pleased with it. I just bought my son the I7 MacBook Air. Yes I spent the money on it. I firmly believe that you are getting 50% more power than the I3 without 50% more cost. I believe that this air is the best choice for students who need to cart the computer with them all day in their pack. Yes the pro is nicer, but not as sleek and ergonomic. I appreciate the video, but the I7 quad core is the top end air book at this point in time, even if it costs a little more.

      get the i3 with 512GB SSD. The quad core processors are useless on the MacBook Air due to thermal restrictions. It’s always important to upgrade storage. I always recommend at least 500GB.

      @@alanyu7732 I actually recommend upgrading ram instead of storage. Most of what I use is in the cloud and programs will get more sophisticated and process intensive (just look at our browsers and video calls now). Things are moving more and more in that direction each year. I have cheap external hard drives for storage. So I invest in ram up front.

    Unfortunately I accidentally bought a Macbook Air 2019 with the i5 8th gen, off the refurbished apple site, thinking it being a 2020. And after some research, apparently it’s basically the same when it comes to real world performance, except the keyboard... But, I do save 313 dollars (CAD), which kinda makes it worth it also the fact according to someone’s review the battery lasts slightly longer and the fans don’t spin up as much and also doesn’t get as hot. What do you think about this, I’m holding off spending the extra 313 CAD for the base 2020 because I’ve heard rumours about the new ARM cpus going to be unveiled at WWDC, and according to some rumours be applied into specially cheaper macbooks like the air, so I’m just gonna try out the butterfly keyboard, I have a 15 days return window as if it’s off Apples refurbished site. What’s your opinion on this, lol?

      Saravanan, I have the MacBook Air with the i7, 16 Gb RAM, and 2TB SSD. It costed about $2300. I usually run Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Endnote, Safari, Mail, and some monitoring software. I have a 2018 15” MacBook Air with 16 gb RAM and 2Tb that costed me $3200 in 2018. The two computers have similar benchmarks, but the Air tends to overheat and slow down when I use videoconferencing, I don’t play games. I travel a lot, taking long flights (15 hours to Asia) and medium length flights (5-6 hours to the West Coast and Europe). I have used it for about 2 months now. First, it works. The computer does stop turboboosting when the CPU exceeds 100 degrees C and whenever I have Endnotes or videoconferences going, it doesn’t turboboost to 3.5 GHz but otherwise will keep on chugging at 2.5GHz. There is no hesitation. I can’t hear the fan noise. When I am using it at full bore, the temperature of the CPU hang around 80 centigrade.
