      Take alook at Fissure 8 from Kilauea. It was going 30 KM/hr and had actual standing waves like a river over rapids.
      That being said, didn't some early shots of lava moving in this direction show that it was a direct downhill run to the ocean?

    So at the 9:58 mark on the far upper right of the frame I can see a bubbling-up zone. Makes one wonder if a new smaller fissure has opened up underneath the existing lava lake. That whole region is pretty molten at this point, as shown by how rapidly the lava is flowing through the breech, so it is unlikely that there are any lava tubes which could transport "young gas-laden" lava to a remote location. I would keep an eye on the spot to see if it continues to bubble and/or grow in size. Back in the early days of the first eruption in 2021 there were a few of the newer cones which initially appeared as bubbling lava pushing up through the lava runoff from cone #1.

      I agree. Itโ€™s fascinating. I find myself wondering whether the rising magma under the old lava field has reheated it so it has at least partially melted again; alternatively, like you, whether rising magma has broken through the old lava field (melted or not). One of these days I really ought to write down all these questions about the details of exactly how magma behaves and exactly what new lava does to old lava fields, and other things like heat exchange between rising magma and mostly-cooled lava from a year ago.

    Are there any signs of the formation of 'lava-tubes', yet? Those would retain the heat; and allow the lava to travel over much greater distances than surface-spread. At Geldingadalir, there were certainly such tubes operating. The lava was pouring from the main cone, and then disappearing down tubes, to re-appear some great distance from the cone.

    • @robertslugg8361
      @robertslugg8361 ๋…„ ์ „ +2

      Tubes require certain features to form. One of these is a slope which can create a channel, over which a top eventually forms as the upper surface cools. The ones at Geldingadalir likely started on the steep hillsides, and then as the lava was drawn away faster along the bottom surface, began to then extend back towards the cone. The pulsatile nature of that flow also helped, by allowing the tube to drain, which then allowed the roof to cool and thicken further. Central oregon is covered by miles after mile of old lava tubes from When Mt Jefferson erupted. They are facinating structures to walk through.
      My guess is that there aren't any of consequence yet with the new eruption as it is both continuous and the slopes so far are rather shallow. I do think there is a very short one (like 20-30 meters long) off the backside of the cone edge on the side of the most recent breakout. You can see a zone of incandesence at that location which is not explained by any surface movement. 3:30 mark, just above the head of the guy in the orange jacket.

    Yes it is impressive to see, the lava lake can only hold lava back as long as there are no breaks, this is a breakout and all the lava that is at a higher altitude compared with its surrounds will naturally flow to the lower ground, just remember that the flow coming out through 'the break' is only a fraction of what is in the lava lake.
    So pls. clarify, is the lava now moving over seemingly solidified lava, moving over last years' deposits or earlier from this year?
