When I was living in Japan I bought a traditional Chinese top that I found in a second hand shop - it was beautiful and blue. I am Turkish coming from Europe, so the next day I wore it to my Japanese Business class at university - the majority of that class were Chinese students studying Japanese. ALL of the Chinese girls came to me to compliment on my top saying that they loved me wearing it - they said it was a compliment to their beautiful traditional fashion and crafting and they all loved it and said it looked beautiful on me. These were Chinese people from China. What is wrong with the US? We have to be open-minded, man. When I am wearing a Kimono or a Yukata Japanese people love it, they also say seeing a Turkish/Westerner paying respect to their culture is beautiful. Never met anyone who said this was "cultural appropriation". I come from Turkey and we have beautiful traditional Turkish garments, if I would see an Asian, white person, black person whoever, wearing our traditional clothing I would sooo happy to see it. Because it means they like and appreciate our culture! Are people going crazy? Chill and embrace this diverse world we are living in! Peace and love.

That dress is a cheongsam. That version is a westernized form of a qipao. The dress was westernized in the 1930-40's to be more form fitting like things seen on Western movie stars. This kid doesnt even know his own culture.

Btw, Qipao is not even traditional to begin with, it was created back in 1920's in Shanghai, with elements borrowed from Manchurian and Western clothing, it was originally representing a modern image of Chinese female, and it is very fashionable, looking it as traditional clothing itself is based on stereotypes. I bet most of these who screamed cultural appropriation knew nothing about actual Chinese traditions other than stereotypes. The real Chinese traditional clothing called Hanfu, which has more than 3000 years of history, and also influenced the traditional clothing of Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Ryukyu, Bhutan and Mongolia.
Of course you can wear it even if you're not Chinese, it was just a piece of highly fashionable garment.

Okay so. I'm Chinese. I saw the tweet. Did I care? Of course not. She was rockin it and looked happy. I'm just glad she was able to enjoy her prom. I showed my mom, who, btw, is Chinese (because I'm full Chinese) and even she was just thinking "wow, the girl looks great" and didn't see an issue with it. What my mom did see an issue with was the guy's tweet towards her. As a woman who lived nearly her entire life in an Asian country, my mother found it offensive to Chinese people that the guy would say what he said. She was mad at him for even claiming to be a defender of Chinese culture. We should be celebrating acceptance and mutual respect, not hating on it.
(Plus the KeiPou came from Shanghai in the 1920's and was used as a fashion accessory for all women. Shanghai was very westernized during this time and the dress came about as a fashion piece that was a blend of Western and Chinese culture.)

Honestly the girl looks stunning in her dress and I'm glad she had fun at prom. Jeremy Lam (which I assume is also a Cantonese speaker since his surname is 林) should be ashamed of himself for trying to ruin such a happy memory for a young girl over such a trivial matter.

What's even more ironic is the fact that the Qipao was actually meant to merge Chinese and Western culture. It was a fashion statement that became popularized around the 1920's. These people are trying so hard to keep this garment from becoming "whitewashed," when in reality, it was already partly westernized to begin with.

I'm from India, a part of Asia . People here love to see foreigners wearing our Indian dress. This is not only about India, most of the Asian countries would appreciate this. They would love to see you in their style of living when you visit this place. America has been a place for SJW's now. Isn't America a mix of all cultures or so I have heard? Someone in the twitter thread made the same point, even going on quora and asking Chinese people if they would be offended by someone wearing a Chinese dress to prom. Every example the person provided showed them fully encouraging it.
Another replied "these people are not representative of an entire race". That's true. But then is it also true that the guy who started dunking on a high schooler, a single individual, is not the ultimate representative of an entire race of people? Especially if he is not even living in China currently? The people who scream "appropriation" are also not representative of all Chinese people. In fact, the majority of them that I personally saw were white people living in America.

well this is how cultural appropriation work: the perpetuator like something, and then try to rationalize the culture and claim that their ancestor actually invented silk (for example) thus making the Chinese dress not fully Chinese but European...
