Ads aren't only about exposure, they're a lot about people associating the brand with positive experiences subconsciously. If people watch your ad before content that shocks them, it's potentially bad for your brand. At least that's the justification here.
Making me watch an ad generally would give me a negative opinion about a brand, no matter what content comes before or after it, but hey, whatever

Do brands realize that people aren't clicking on videos for the ads, people do go click a leafy video, sit through a Pepsi ad and think, "wow that was wonderful, I'll consider buying some" then proceed to the video and hear some hateful rambling and go " oh no, how could my brands ad be on here. I'm a GUN channel, you can imagine that makes youtube freak out! Even though my content is trick shooting and family friendly. I've noticed most of my videos being approved for monetization (eventually) but making MUCH less, and they just give me the form letters of how monetization works. (like I didn't know this already after 4 year) What ticks me off more though, is they are absolutely limiting reach and engagement. They've even admitted this. That's more frustrating to me.
They never explain why and I suspected I'm somehow listed in "sensitive content" lump. I don't mind that brands can opt out of my content, but I dont want to be lumped in with unrelated vids like sexually explicit etc. I also don't want my engagement to be limited, even to my fans, while I'm practicing legal, fun activities.
Thank you for explaining this better than I've heard most explain it.
Love your work Kirsten, you'll always have a bright future with your level of skill but it is really depressing that KRplus is attacking so many forms of content. Survivalist content gets targeted too, stuff about making a campfire, hunting, surviving in the woods. Some of my favorite KRplusrs from that community like Survival Lilly had total demonetization. Most of her videos feature product sponsorships to make up for this. Maybe you can do the same, get some gun company sponsorships.
And this is all happening because Google, who owns KRplus has an extreme agenda that envisions a world where no one goes into nature or does anything that could make them a dangerous person, some sort of technocratic utopia where we all eat paste and save the planet by never interacting with it.

KRplus is essentially implementing fascism into their little sub-market of sorts. It's all for the good of the "nation" but instead of nation, it's KRplus and the one party state is just the people at the top who run it and make the major decisions. It's not perfectly accurate due to the fact that KRplus is funded and somewhat controlled by outside sources, but nonetheless they are silencing opposition in a roundabout way.

Pretty simple. Content providers can still do whatever they want, if it's offensive, or possibly too edgy or unpopular, you don't make money from it.

Seems to me the advertisers themselves should be smacking KRplus around the head. They ought to be advertising on video content that people actually watch, so that their ads get seen. That is the entire reason they made the ad in the first place. At the time of this comment this video has 2.3M views which is 2.3 million missed opportunities for the advertisers. What the actual fuck.
This. I'm certain that there are companies that don't mind running ads on videos with mature content and it's a highly questionable business decision on youtube's part to keep all of those doors closed and screw over a bunch of creators simultaneously.
I think we reached a point where there are so many big youtubers, and many smaller ones which are still big, that advertisers can easily decide to remove their sponsorship from the most controversial and only advertise on those which are more "family friendly".
You're right. I think this is what the advertisers probably have in mind, but the algorithm KRplus is using is not subtle enough to make the distinction is a way that makes sense - the impact seems to be much more far reaching, affecting channels that are not really, in essence, controversial.

No because you still can't not associate it in some respects with the video. It's like if you always see a toothpaste ad with a funny channel you might start associating the funny, positive vibes of those videos with that product/brand. This is reinforced even more than TV cuz most videos will only have a single ad that runs and so only one other thing to attach to it. I can see how this makes a little bit of sense but, like E n H explained, it's way too strict. Also the ad associations aren't nearly as strong as in-video ads or like product placement, but still make a psychological connection nonetheless.

Is not about being associated, it's about being the financier of the content. If your add runs on controversial content, whatever you like to be associated with that content or not, you're still paying for its creation.
