Im impressed how well the drones scared of the thieves, Id love to see a mark II of these drones

Honestly, seeing these security drones work really well makes me wonder, what if Hacksmith with security drones, Mark Rober with glitter drones, and Michael Reeves with attack drones all tried making a project with all their inventions together?
Still exciting to see projects like these work really well!

This looks like a good example of an open source project for people across the globe to improve the drone smarts, particularly with roof boundaries and detecting home. You may need beacons or reflect pads in a pattern the drone can detect in the air, to know how to land.

You say it’s unfortunate for us that we didn’t see more thieves getting scared. I’m bloody satisfied anyhow with this vid. I loved how complete it felt. And great that it worked

I think it might be cool and more terrifying if you had a red laser on the drone that would lock on to the "target." It'd be pretty awesome, and would probably be a lot more scary.

I love the idea of these drones as active security. Just shining a light and camera on intruders is a powerful deterrent.
Granted, the automated light on a turreted system shows just how easy it would be to weaponize something like this, even for a casual mid-budget builder.

Love it, but I would like to see MarkII with a few improvements:
A)
Replace paint bombs with paintball marker auto gun.
B)
Better landing pad with weather protection.
Maybe use some strong magnets to lock the drones onto the landing pad - and electromagnets to release it for takeoff.
IR diodes can be used to improve landing precision.
Place the landing/charge pad on rails, so the drone can be rolled into some form of hangar.

Not only do we want a part 2 - you could make this into an entire show helping other companies :-) Absolutely love it

I work with security systems but this is on a whole other level!
So glad to see guys like "Steve" getting caught.

Heres some of my personal opinions
1, maybe have the thermal camera mounted stationary
2, have the property map out in grids, since theres already multiple camera already mounted on different angle / or specifically set grid on specific area like front of the door and front of the containers
3, pin the grid using the foot of the trespassers
4, upgrade the splash pattern to maybe little over a grid to maximize coverage or the trespassers standing on multiple grids at the same time
5, set the firing procedure when the target get stationary for 3~5 seconds in a single grid to avoid innocent ppl
6, drones only take off when target enter grid for 2 seconds to maximize element of surprise
7, use non color uv paint with some itching powder , trespassers could just wipe em instead of washing them off and would look for a doctor
8, louda$$ alarm(optional) mount at specific location, only goes off when the paint fire triggered to prevent burglars escape before the paint spray on them and could stun them for a short moment to enjoy the full shower of paint

You should use drone with cages like the drones for indoor inspection flights. This would prevent the drone from getting destroyed when crashing into things

Even if the drones don't scare off people 100% of the time, it's still neat that it can help aid the cops into knowing where the the thief would be. I mean it's kind of hard to miss when they're under a spotlight with a siren blaring above their head. Pretty dang neat

Some of the truest hacksmith behavior right there. People wanna rob us? Have fun robbing a place protected by a literal drone swarm. The siren and light honestly were a brilliant idea, because they trigger the theifs fight or flight, and since they have no idea what they're fighting, they'll almost always choose flight. Brilliantly done, and incredible AI too, that level is not easy in any sense of the word!

I like to think the thieves were scared shitless as to what the drones might pack in weaponry, bc they definitely know who they’re stealing from.

A shroud could also have height markers in the form of bar codes to assist drone landing process.

You guys should try and see if Mark Robert has any interest in doing a part 2 with you guys! Would be an awesome collab package thieves series even though he just ended it. Awesome job guys seems like they work better than you give them credit for

When engineers get a chance to fulfill their security design dreams, it is such a sight to behold.

You should make the drone have a countdown to call the police if the intrudes ignore the paint and the sirens.

I was only into the 3rd minute of the video and I caught myself with this huge smile on my face, and wanted to FF to the end to see how everything came together. But then, i was afraid I would miss something cool. I love this type of engineering work!

On the one hand, it's impressive how effective just the presence of the drones are as a deterrent. OTOH, for storytelling reasons I really want one or more thieves to escalate and get into a battle of technological wits with our Hacksmith team. Also makes me wonder how many (if any) thieves are repeat "customers".

You should get a sniper laser and have it body track, then install some sort of speaker that makes a charge noise. It'd scare the hell out of them thinking they're about to get beamed

I used to work for a R&D company in New Zealand that was working on a security drone system for several years. Its pretty awesome to see what you guys achieved in (what looks like) several months.
Excellent work! Please make a version 2!

I want to see "boleadoras" in action. Boleadoras are traditional throwing weapons used by South American gauchos for hunting or capturing animals by entangling their legs. They consist of two or more balls (often made of stone or metal) connected by cords that are thrown in a spinning motion to ensnare the target's legs.

A perfect example of why great inventors need to have, and continue to develop, high levels of emotional resilience. Dealing with failure after failure, and watching your baby crash and burn repeatedly, while you problem solve and find progress where others might simply see failure, is the true sign of a great inventor. Thanks for all the inspiration you guys deliver.

this is probably one of my favourite hacksmith videos, which is saying a lot. I think this also has potential to be refined into a commercial product, if the paint dropper was removed and the kinks with landing were ironed out. really cool build

It's incredibly impressive how well you were able to integrate the security camera footage and drone flight, that's not an easy coding challenge

You just revealed your security system, guys. At some point, someone would disable the system, leaving you with the inevitable feeling of defeat.

I loved this idea, definitely need a part 2. Would anyone else also like to see a Mark Rober-esque package thief video? It could be for packages, but I was thinking maybe for cars? I would love to see the Hacksmith Industries fight car theft in Canada and maybe come up with some electronic and physical ways to fix the rampant OBD port vulnerability (merch shop ideas maybe?)

that is awesome. I would suggest if a second one is made have it automatically call the police if it does detect an unwanted visitor to your facility.
and have a bigger battery so it can fly for longer and maybe even have a longer range with an upgraded camera :)

Honestly the way this drone is incorporated for simple security deterrent in an autonomous manner is fantastic. Just goes to show if they can slap these together haphazardly and only get a few test runs in, imagine if one of the big companies were to pick up an idea like this and sick a team of engineers on it. Realistically a product like this very much has it's merits, as mentioned by hacksmith themselves, cheaper solution than paying for a security guard, and with integrations it could even be used to programmatically notify law enforcement. Using something like IR Paint would make it so that thieves are easily identified, even if they managed to leave the scene of the crime.

Really liked the video with the drones scaring the thieves off, drop paint on them shining a light on them making lots of noise. Enjoyed it immensely. Keep up the good work.

I will legitimately buy a channel membership if you guys turn this into a series. Sort of like Mark Rober's glitterbombs. And also more videos of robbers being caught.
Maybe make member only compilations of theives triggering the system.
EDIT: It looks like they ARE turning this into a series, there's a member's only update video. I'm gonna think about whether I buy my membership now or once they post an official part 2.

I'm a bit surprised because in a lot of ways this project wasn't so completely over the top wild like many of the other projects, but for exactly that reason, I would say this is one of my favorite recent videos!
I love that it had real world application and worked!

Most definitely would love to see this drone series continue! Not only is it entertaining, it’s functional and inspiring. Would love to see it get to the point where it’s completely autonomous. Plus adding a glitter bomb would be amazing lol. Sorry for your losses but I’m glad you’re giving would be thieves a taste of medicine, the bitter kind when they’re arrested. The great thing about how loud the drones are, they cover some of the noise of the police arriving, letting them catch the bad guys in the act of trying to break in.

This needs to be an actual product. I live in a woods that has it fair share of break-ins. I could definitely see the viability of having an outdoor drone base security system.

One of the effects of the war in Ukraine. A security system with paint-dropping drones, or better yet, stink bombs would be great. Especially if you pair them with AI that will detect unauthorized entry into the area. The perfect automated security system.

Please make a part 2! Not only would this be useful for commercial properties, this would help on farms and stuff too. For example, deterring wild animals from livestock.

This is the type of innovation I can actually see turned into a product. Loads of business and homeowners get hit by thieves and would want one.
There have been a lot of shootings and home invasions occurring at or near my neighborhood. Every now and then I thought about sending a drone to surveil and thought how useful a ready drone on a weatherproof charging pad would be.

for any real use application, you need to work out a battery auto-swap capability... so they can keep going all the time. The docking would need to be more precise... or if it lands on the pad, then using those fancy multi-directional-spinner-wheels (used for freight box tracks, etc), the automation would move and spin the drone to the correct position to link up and swap over the battery pack with a new one. Then the old is charging, but it may need a handful of battery packs to be a valid solution (that can swap in multiple times over the night, so needs some rotation function of old and new units).? OR... Maybe a "simple" automated robot "arm" like on a factory line could be set up on the edge of the pad and detect the location of the pack on the drone (once landed), and reach over and remove it and place into an empty charge unit, then replace with in a new charged one?

This was such a cool idea! Maybe as you creep into V2 you could design a better cage system around the drone for protection, could even 3D print it from flexible materials.
Also just making a “catch net” around the landing pad could help immensely. Like 3ft wide boarders around it at a slight up-angle to help the drop slide down to the charging pad when it lands or slightly misses?

I would actually love to see this as a series on other properties that are getting robbed!

The drone knows where it is by knowing where it isn't

Zipline has a line of drones that is very impressive, and I think you guys should check it their tech for your attack drones. Holy cow, I was impressed.

i would totally love to see a second version of these drones. maybe even one where you can talk through the drone from your phone or drops something a little stronger than paint, or maybe just more paint but that would probably be pretty heavy

this is insane to watch. i thought about having a drone with lights and a camera deploy on its own when my alarm is triggered, but this is so much better and thought through than what i wanted to build. i love it!

This was too much fun. Def part 2.
Note: Drone uses GPS. GPS is intentionally miscalibrated by a meter or so. You wanna land on target, you're gonna need your own triangulation. Don't worry about using it know your coords relative lat/long or earth, just use the timing of the signals to determine if you're in the correct position relative to the transmitters (record timing delays on pad, return to exact same timing delay).

You need to use non-washable paint or dye. Maybe ink. So whoever gets sprayed can be identified days later. Should take at least a least a week to wash off. This is key.

Fantastic work guys. Hopefully, your deterrence has scared would be robbers off. I would definitely love more drone videos for security or any weird customizations really. I would love to see someone build a protoss carrier from StarCraft. Say an autonomous RC zeppelin(mobile charging station) with a swarm of mini drones patrolling your grounds.

You guys should make a similar drone that emits the sounds of Chimpanzees, getting more and more excited, at a "concert" volume. This would provide and excellent (and probably very accurate) soundtrack for the whole project!

This was so fun to watch! A concern I might have is corrosion or oxidation on the charging area, current and water speed it up quite a bit. How do the drones hold up in the rain? That's pretty impressive.

I would highly recommend prop guards to protect the props when accidentally flying into objects. And what happened to the glitter?

Cool setup with drones. One idea that can help drones land on pad is some type light on corners so drone can use as reference to center its self down to pad

Love to see this done with a commercial drone instead of a kids toy. Also, put some soft nonskid feet on it so it wont skate sideways so easily when landing.

I haven’t watched a hacksmith video in a while, I loved the energy these guys had. Glad to see you guys have some great team members to help carry the load.

I'm especially impressed by the coding part, programming those drones must have surely been the hardest part so props to your determination dude!

Companies would pay big money for this, if you fleshed this out it would easily be worth 10s if not 100s of millions of dollars.

Petty thieves will run away at the first sign of danger, even if it's loud noises and lights. They know they're running the risk of getting arrested or seriously hurt, and unless they get really lucky, they don't make a lot of money, contrary to popular belief. "Steve" is likely hardened, has serious untreated mental illness, or is desperately addicted to substances.

I think one of the things I like about this channel is that you aren’t afraid of sharing the failures.

YES, make this a series. I would love to see a HUGE drone that had a spot light on it and it would auto fly when there is detected motion.

Laser guided landing and landing pad shroud to stop wind effecting the landing. Maybe some kind of fiducial marks for the landing pad.

Would be cool to see a drone army.
One that spotlights and blares a siren
One that follows and shoots paint
And another outfitted for a longer flight to follow their getaway vehicle at high speed and drop magnetic geotags.

I'd highly recommend a couple things:
A camera on the bottom, one that is shaped like a dome, where the angle it looks can be adjusted. This will allow for better landing, target locking, visuals, etc.
A bright color frame outline around the charging pad. With the camera on the bottom, can use machine learning to detect the bright color on the roof of the warehouse. Will create an obvious separation between the two. Also maybe using the same bright color of tape to separate the charging pad into multiple areas big enough for each drone, so a drone can know if a spot is occupied, then go into a different spot on the charging pad. The camera will also help with landing.
A couple of those detection sensor components. Can possibly give a distance to things around the top of the drone, to prevent it from colliding into something when going up. Either that or gps, with a map of the buildings, so it can distance itself from any of the buildings while flying up, then reposition above the warehouse with the charging pad, then use the camera to find the charging pad's outline.
A way to assign a person to a drone. So if multiple people come, can have each drone target a separate person.
A circuit that can monitor the battery of the drone. At a low level, even if it's patrolling, it'd be sent back to recharge, preventing it from crashing.
A pre-recorded audio, either saved online or made by one of you, that tells the crooks that the police are already on their way. I'm sure that'd give them a run for their money, along with that very loud horn sound.
With these additions, I think the drones can be pretty efficient and powerful. I hope these help in some way or inspire any ideas for improvement.

This is probably one of my top 3 favorite projects that you guys have done. I'd love to see version 2.0 of these.

That's one hell of a step into automated security drones. Lots of potential for scalability and escalation as well. Love it.
But its also low-key kinda terrifying, when one stops to consider the potential ramifications of the development of such technologies.
