Himalaya Gongo Hotel ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ต

  • โ–  NEPAL, HIMALAYA: Ever since I'd ran into an Indian trekker coming back down along the Langtang river on my first day of this Himalayan excursion, I've had one thing on my mind: get to Tibet Guesthouse at Lama Hotel rest-stop and try their Gongo (or Roksi as it's called in Nepal).
    I always like to sample locally made brews when I'm in a new country and according to this Indian who had just spent the previous night at Tibet Hotel, the owner there had made the best Gongo he'd ever had in his entire life.
    In fact, and I quote: "He has brewed it to perfection!", he said.
    That's why I set out from Bamboo Lodge so early in the morning without even eating anything other than a granola bar. I wanted to get to Tibet Guesthouse as soon as possible to start the day like any real man should: with a fresh shot of Gongo!
    What I didn't expect though was to run into the coolest and nicest couple I met on my whole Himalayan trekking adventure. A couple that started the very first lodge at the Hotel Lama location over 40 years ago and are still running that same guesthouse today.
    โ–  Now before you watch, or after for that matter, I'd like to comment on what you see in the very beginning here, which I actually fully understand given the hard times hotel and guesthouse operators face, but still rubs me the wrong way. As I'm walking into this area here called Lama hotel I already knew where I was going: Tibet Guesthouse.
    Every-time I entered a cluster of guesthouses like this, the people who run the first hotels and restaurants will of course be outside trying their best get you to stop at theirs. In this case however I knew where I was going and clearly stated I was going to Tibet Guesthouse, although I didn't know exactly which building that was.
    Instead of simply pointing it out for me, they answer evasively on all my questions and instead say something along the lines of why don't I stop at their hotel instead.
    Normally I am fairly good and ignoring such people but in this case I was so obsessed with hunting for Gongo that they nearly got the better of me. Especially when I saw that big barrel of I almost set up shop there and as you can see for the next 5 minutes even after getting away, seriously pondered going back to eat at said hotel.
    Luckily I came to my senses and both drank and ate at Tibet Guesthouse which was the original plan. My point is when someone already know where they're going I wish they'd simply say sure... that's the hotel you see 3 buildings down there on the right; enjoy!

I have no debt and I've got a pretty good savings that I'm just reluctant to use. But as you say, I need to get out there. The only real traveling I've done was in the Yucatan and the Caribbean. Don't worry,, I'm not talking about cruises or all inclusive resorts.....I did the kind of stuff Harald and Bald and others do and it was the greatest time of my life. I know that still isn't exactly being adventurous (its less than 1500 miles from home and even when going off the tourist trail there are not many truly isolated/adventurous places. Maybe I'm wrong...but there certainly seems to be something about people who live in mountains and who know all their neighbors and life being inherently hard in such places...that that kind of people, no matter where in the world, tend to be very welcoming and incredibly charitable to those who pass through...it's pretty much that way in the USA in various parts of Appalachia as well and I have seen at least one or two reports of some researchers studying people who live in cold, mountainous areas that apparently found it to just be the case: people who live in cold, mountainous areas are just nicer and more gentle to others...almost out of necessity I imagine since you never feel the need of other humans quite like living in such areas. In cities, it's easy to just treat others as just another number...one of many who has no relation to you and who, if you wanted to, you would never have to see again even though you live within 1 square mile of each other.

    • @mbenrice
      @mbenrice 2 ๋…„ ์ „ +2

      @@wowomah6194 I have had this same observation. I guess the harder the elements push people, the closer they draw together. It is also just in generally cold places - not strictly mountainous areas; the northern plains of Canada would be a good example. What certainly helps is their distance from urbanised centres, where money and power have an influence. I also saw evidence of this humanity in Vietnam in rural areas. There are many factors but the differences between cold, mountainous areas and cities in the USA, for example, are stark.

    Wow. The green vines & blue purple/flowers above doorways are absolutely amazing, I love the wood, glass & shelf spaces lodge owners create. So much Hollywood 'advertising culture' steals in an unhealthy way from sustainable individuals like the Nepalese, consumers will obsess over a commercial enterprise like 'lord of the rings' while you move your flesh & blood in your own arrow of time & space to connect with real individuals also on a living creative journey that becomes spectral wby including technology & observers. You encounter others who you know are like you & also on a journey that includes amazing things like nature, sustainability, communication social, economic & food cultures in a holistic trajectory. Nepal is so great for the real cyber journeyman like you. I'm glad you got your Gongo. It is also so thoughtful that you work tirelessly to bring us with you, completing each production while you are en route so that we also travel with you. I hiked & sprinted in the snow & our local preserves & found a huge crystal fossil & ran errands 13.5 miles yesterday. There is some relationship here you cultivate between your athlete viewers to your activities wherever you are. You dont wait a month to edit & post each video (you could) you are self trained at content creation & production & you mentally make the effort to unite all these things, even as time passes this is how you understand the imperative of information as something universally mechanistic, influential & immediate & creative & not at an imaginary distance in some kind of inaccessible conceptual delay, again what advertisers do.

    Kiddo, these views of the land and your hike goes way beyond amazing. I am 77 and I have traveled about the world on my own, as it is easier to meet people. I wish more people would have the courage to venture out and meet the World face to face with others who are sharing this life. I lived in the U.S. 68 years and had been all over, but never South America. Then one day, I just packed it up and moved to South America, where I have lived, and love, for ten years. I spoke very little Spanish and demanded to live in an all Spanish neighborhood on the side of a volcano. Keep the videos coming!

    I'm just amazed. These people barely had any customers and business for two years, and still they are not pushing anyone into buying their food/staying at their lodge. They are still so friendly when Harald turns down their offers. That one woman even gave the card of the other lodge Harald wanted to go to. Amazing people up there!
