The series is filled with lots of over the top deaths, challenges and a major twist ending that has a lot going on with it. Because of the major reveals there's several fan theories floating around about the show including how Gi-Hun almost became a guard, his relationship with Il-Nam, The VIPs and a lot more.
Throughout this we're gonna be breaking down the best of them but I'm putting a red light on the video right now if you don't want spoilers. If you enjoy the video then please hit the thumbs up button and make sure you subscribe for videos like this every day.
With that out the way, let's get into our Squid Game Theories.
Ok so throughout the series we learn more about the set up of the Squid Game including the guards and also those in control. Though the security that works in the compound seems like they're all part of the vast organisation too it could be that they were selected much in the same way that all of the players were.
In episode one we come across a mysterious character played by Gong Yoo who offers Gi-Hun two choices. He can either pick a red or blue card and Gi-Hun goes with the latter which could end up cementing which type of player that he is in the game.
Lucy.what1 on TikTok came up with the theory the other day that had Gi-Hun chosen the red card that he could've ended up becoming a guard instead of the player that he was. If we're going deeper into this then it's definitely a possibility and the guards themselves seem almost as trapped as the players at points. They themselves sleep in cells, are killed for even revealing their faces and though they seem like they're in control, we see from the way that they're treated that they actually have very little power.
Similar to the players they are given numbers and this could highlight the similarities.
They also have very little knowledge of what's going on either and don't know who each other are. Everyone is kept in the dark so that they can leave the facility without really knowing what's going on and therefore it seems more like this might be a one time thing for them just like the players. It's definitely an interesting one and the more we learn about the game, the more it seems like the guards are almost just as powerless as the players, hinting towards this perhaps being the case.
Now in our last video we talked about all of the clues and hints that Gi-Hun was actually the one who was in control of the game. This included things like the file starting at two instead of 1, him instructing the Front Man to end riot and also the marbles area being modelled on his childhood home.

I was thinking, at the beginning with the game at the train station, Gi-hun gets slapped instead of paying. When he finally wins, he's forgotten all about the money and tries to slap him back, but of course he is reminded of the money, and takes it almost reluctantly instead of hitting the other man. This really symbolises the game, it becomes more about the revenge and violence than the money.

The title of the last episode, 'One Lucky Day' was a big spoiler to Koreans. Especially the scene that Gi-hun's mother is found dead. One Lucky Day is one of the most famous short stories in the history of Korean literature ( even elementary school kids know it ). The main character in the story, Kim Cheom-ji, is a poor rickshaw puller. One day, his sick and starving wife asks him if he could get a bowl of meat soup for her on his way back from work. Kim Cheom-ji gets infuriated "Where do we have the money to ?" and rejects her request. The wife answers, "Well, I am feeling like something will happen today, so please come back as soon as the work is done." As usual, he heads for work. Oddly, the day turns out to be "one lucky day" for Kim Cheom-ji. Because of a sudden rain, he gets more long - distance customers than usual, and, in return, more profit than ever before. Delighted, Kim Cheom-ji doesn't reject a wealthy student's request to go extra miles for double his usual paycheck after his usual working hour. He gets back home very late, with a bowl of meat soup in his hand . He can hear his baby crying in the house, and when he opens the door, he finds his wife's dead body, gone cold from illness and starvation. He picks her up and cries, "I brought the soup you asked for. Why are you unable to eat it? Dam* it, I knew it was one heck of a lucky day."

I hate to be that guy, but a slight correction: as Jun-Ho is going through all those files about the past games, he doesn't just find that his brother was a contestant, he finds his name in the book of winners. He won in the year 2015. He hasn't been missing since then, he only went missing recently, in the beginning his landlord says his rent is a week late. Jun-Ho also says on the phone to his mother early on that he tends to not answer calls for days at a time. My guess is that after winning, In-Ho returned as the Front Man, or as a guard/staff and worked his way up to a the position of Front Man, considering how he apparently tends to "go missing" for days at a time usually.

Yeah I was gonna comment this too. We know for sure that his brother was a winner in 2015. But Jun-ho thought that his brother must have been a player in the most recent game, because he went "missing" when the first round started. This is why he believed that the "zombie" corpse that the current guards were talking about was his brother.
I assume his brother won in 2015 and went back to his normal life (much like Gi-hun did at first) and then hosted the games periodically since Jun-ho mentioned to his mother that he goes missing all the time but always comes back.

Yeah, I feel like it's their relationship. Il Nam didn't have time for his son so he put him last when it came to hosting the games (apparently decides not to host it before he passes.) So at the start of the show Il Nam pointing out that he is the last player has a significant meaning to it. He put him (supposed son until) dead last even in his own Squid Games. As if the games and contestants we're more important than his son. Though later regrets it as he decides to let the Front Man host it instead.

Perhaps Il-Nam is the leader of the Asian continent and the other VIPs run their respective games. If anyone recalls Sae-Byeok's last conversation with her brother, she said that she "wouldn't abandon [him]." "I'm your big sis, why would I lie to you?"
When Gi-Hun went to retrieve her brother, it can be assumed that he was told that Sae-Byeok had simply asked Gi-Hun to take care of him, and left after that. From how he reacts in the next shot, you can just *see* the pain in his face. He thinks his sister lied and abandoned him. Like the part where she’s pretending to have diarrhea in order to make the guard feel uncomfortable to distract him while the North Korean chick spies on the other guards through the vents. As childish as it is, it’s just an inherently comical scene. There’s multiple little bits like that throughout the course of the season that serve to lighten the mood just a tiny bit and provide a tad of comic relief to balance the heavy stuff. I think the message you want to say is that all those people THOUGHT they had nothing to live for. That without the money their life would be worthless, if not opening destructive on the people around them. They are all suicidal. And in the end we see in all of their humanization that they did. That money was just money.
I don't think that has anything to do with coming back. Pretty clearly the front man was a foil for Sang Woo, who lost his humanity.

Ill-Nam was actually good at betting. Also, there can be a huge chance that he betted on Gi-hun too. When we saw that he was winning almost every round of marbles but pretended to forget everything everytime he won it. He later on teaches the lesson to the main character when he begs for the last marble left with Il-Nam reminding Gi-hun that he cheated throughout. It certainly proves that why he came with a game of betting on people and also the games he was already aware of. We can also conclude that he must have betted on Gi-hun as Il Nam is with Gi-hun all the time in the game and also when they were in the room.

2:47 Adding on to this, I'd like to point out that the drawing of three people on the wall wasn't a reference to the dinner scene, but rather was a clue on what the 4th game was supposed to be. The main reason is that the supposed "dinner drawing" is set before the glass hopping game, when the dinner was presented to the finalists after they passed the 5th round while there is no other drawing for what the 4th game would be. Therefore, I believe that the 4th round was meant to be a marble game that would require 3 people to play: this would leave Il-Nam as the odd one out as there was meant to be 40 players for this round and 39 of them would be playing. However, after the doctor was found out and killed, the Front Man probably had to change the amount of players from 3 to 2 at the last minute, as a way to ensure there would be one player remaining (38 playing) and that Il-Nam could leave the game. That's why the players were allowed to pick whatever game they wanted to play with the marbles, because the Front Man didn't have any games for 2 players already set up. And that's why I believe the marble game was so different from the other games that were shown.

My personal observations and theory havent read about this anywhere yet:
Gi Hun always ends up winning each game at the very last minute or second. His decision of joining was actually last minute hence he ended up being as the last player 456. Ironically, he also won all games without deliberately or intentionally killing anyone. This pattern can be observed as well at his very last game with Player 01 - when the ambulance arrived and saved the dying stranger at the very last second and he was supposed to kill Il Nam however Il Nam passed away on his own. This could also hint Gi Hun's ending of the deadly game in S2 (notice how he made his decision of turning back from his flight at the very last minute again suggesting to us that he'll win again this fight)

Regardless, if they were all randomly picked then how would have have decided on a ranking system? I could see it being a situation where they are chosen and they start as circles and each year work their way up to squares because they would gain experience. That could also explain how the stealing organs thing worked because a square likely formulated the entire thing and just recruited some lower guards to help.

It's possible (like in the running man) that the winners don't actually ever win the money - hence why the Front man was still poor irl, but he was good enough to be offered a place as a guard. That could also support the theory that Gi-hun is in fact Il-nam's son, since that could be a way of him earning his inheritance and perhaps ultimately taking his father's place...

But some hints also point to the fact, that "getting entertainment for the rich" was also a kind of a facade, hyping Gi-Hun involvement. I mean, the rules say that everyone must have equal chances. They always go after people desperate for money, in big debt or ahead of huge spendings. It gives them options to leave and come back. And afterwards their money is "rightfully theirs". Il-Nam also favors players who are helpful not antagonistic and even his final game/bid was to check if people help each other. I think, that based on everyting we saw, we could assume that Il-Nam actually wanted to change the most good-hearted person's life each time. The Front Man not only won his edition, but prior to this, donated his organs to save his younger sibling. In my opinion, he wouldn't shoot his brother if it wasn't for aa higher ideal. He seemed visibly shook.
The prize money never gets back to the pool - if the winner doesn't want it, the families of other players actually get a share each as a consolation. If you last words are "Do you still believe in good in humanity?" I would say you are REALLY concerned about morally well-adjusted people to get the money.
This and the fact, that the lives of each contestant is carefully monitored not only prior to the Squid Game but also after (to see, perhaps, if they are not, um, misusing the money?) we can see when The Front Man tells Gi-Hun to get on the plane.
Also, why are we not talking about the choice of haircolor at the end? Doesn't it pertrain to the Guards?

Does anyone remember when Il-nam met Gi-hun near the grocery store, after everyone was allowed to go home? And the reason Gi-hun ultimately goes back was because of his sick mother and what Il-Nam said. I have a theory that maybe Il-Nam was affected by Gi-hun's kindness, since right of the start Gi-hun has tried to include him in the group and worried for him. Although Il-Nam was pretty cynical, the way he challenges Gi-hun at the end if the series - so Gi-hun could do something with his life. And the fact that he shared his last dying breathe trying to play a "game" (i.e. the bet) with him, shows just how close he feels towards Gi-hun. Il-Nam may have even regretted creating the game until he realized he was dying but prolly couldn't stop given how invested the VIPs are. I think Il-Nam orchestrated the last meeting and him seeing the guy with the brief case (at the airport) with the help of the front man so Gi-hun could go back and stop the game. Notice in the phone conversation, the front man knew he was boarding his place. I'm thinking the front man will be in it too since he closed Il-nam's eyes (a sigh of respect) and because he had to shoot his brother. The front man also looks stuck.

    - the number on the business card is a real number of some random guy in Korea who's been getting countless prank calls and messages day and night since this show aired. He's had this number for like 10 years and its linked to his business so he's kind of in a pickle
    - gi-hun died his hair red at the end as a sign of the start of a new life cuz he couldn't go back to who he used to be anymore. Apparently the director tried to think of something he would never do that was to dye his hair bright red
    - the last episode "one lucky day" is a reference to a korean story of the same title where a son goes off to make money only to finally succeed and back home and see that his mother's already passed away
    - gong yoo and lee byung-hun are top tier actors in korea and basically agreed to appear as small cameo roles as a favor to the director over drinks
    - in an interview, the director disproved the theory of choosing red or blue would determine whether u were a player or a guard. Sadly the color didn't matter

Well how to explain to the others one player is missing but not because of a game? It would mean he had something special the others didnt have and this is against the rule of egality. It would be a problem for the sake of the games.
But if a soldier dies who would care?? No one, it wont affect the game and no one will notice, no one even knows a soldier identity so wdc

The games are also somewhat designed to be played by specific numbers of people. Tug-of-war needs teams of 10, and the marble game needs an even number of players. Losing a player outside a game disrupts this and also affects betting as the VIPs will be expecting to see their player live or die in person.

Well to put it simply... No one cares if a special force agent dies, they can always replace them. But the world will become chaotic if a politician dies out of nowhere, and what if through an investigation, they find that the agents are involved in the murder? In this game, a player's life is more valuable than the guard's.

The 7th floor theory! Why did Il-Nam invite Gi-Hun to the 7th floor in that building? It was the only floor that could be clicked in the elevator. My guess: it is the 7th and final game with both their lives at stake; since Gi-Hun completed 6 in the facility. The Priest in the show also mentioned the number 7’s religious significance as well. Could be worth looking into

Another foreshadowing to Gi-Hung’s success is that, even though he was hurting for money, he wasn’t greedy. Aside his gambling addiction throughout the show, wether it was money or his life, it was always a decision with good intentions. He did steal money from his mom, but it wasn’t for his benefit. As he won money from the horses to do something for his daughter, he tipped the girl in the window that gave him his winning. We see it at the train station as he forgot about the money to slap the dude; as he approaches the eldest player and befriends him after knowing about the money (also applies to the girl that pickpockets him); doesn’t take the money from the stepdad; he enters the game with the mentality that if he wins any type of cash (because he doesn’t know how much is in the game) he can pay his mom’s bills and provide for his daughter. Other traits that jeopardizes him to win: he picks the christian man (we do understand that this not about religious beliefs but about working with someone that doesn’t meet you eye-to-eye); he picks the old man knowing the circumstances of the place (even though it’s the only time he actually cheats but not for money, but because of future life comparisons); he accepts the guys request to have the 01 bib (to be clear that we tend to take/keep when someone else wants it); and sparing his friend’s life even after everything 218 did.
Now, the only thing that I’m a little fuzzy is the why Il-Nam questions him about if there were good people out there. Proposing the “No good deed goes unpunished”. Or the gamble of helping others and not getting the same in return. Makes me think that Gi-Hung wasn’t a random pick. Like, selfless people can’t be that successful because money will change you for the worst or something.
I believe that he loves his life, money just made it miserable for him. Specially when his financial situation wasn’t on his control nor decision. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t submit to money unless if it’s to help others.

All their deaths were foreshadowed from their past: Gi-hun swore on his mother to not pester Sae-byeok if she untied him, after he untied him he intsantly began peestering her and his mother died...coincidemce I think not, Ali played his boss and stole his money, in the end Sang-woo betrayed him and stole his marbles, Sae-byeok put a knife to her broker's neck, Sang-woo fatally stabbed her in the neck, Deok-su jumped of the bridge to escape from a gang he died when he fell through the tempered glass bridge,In ep 2 Sang-woo attempted suicide and in the last episode he stabs himself in the neck. I don't know if I buy the theory that if he chose red, he would have been a guard. Did that place look like it needed extra workers!?!? Did it look like it had trouble recruiting!?!?
Also, if you want to have sympathy for the workers, thinking that they are a slave to the system just like the players, that's fine. But that's only reserved for the circles who are locked in their rooms. The others (triangles and squares) have weapons and access to weapons. If they wanted to do the right thing and end the games, they could. I have no sympathy for them.
All those people who died in previous games, no one reported them missing? The South Korean police must have a huge missing persons caseload.
Whenever I see movies and shows like this, it always makes me wonder how the evil organization manages to find so many henchmen and workers. The old Bond movies were notorious for this. Evil rich man wants to drown the world so we can all live in an underwater world? Who signs up for that to work for him?! How does he convince them to sign on? Help wanted ad in the newspaper? How does it all get kept quiet?

at the beginning of squid game, the train to Busan guy said "how about you use your body to pay?" when gi-hun couldn't flip the square, so I think because the prize money was lesser, he only slapped him, but because in the actual game, the prize money is bigger, they killed them and sold the organs to get back some money, so they are using their bodies to pay.

A small error, the Frontman didn’t disappear in 2015. He won the 2015 game and went back to his ordinary life, but had been behaving weirdly, going missing every once in awhile and avoiding calls from his cop bro and mom(probably only during the span of the games every year). That’s why the cop bro literally calls his mom talking about his bro’s recent repeated disappearance, and searches for him just before finding the invitation card and infiltrating the game. And his apartment was still there with all his belongings intact, if he disappeared in 2015 his apartment would not be rented out by him anymore. The landlady even mentions that he is late for his recent rent. And before you say it was a flashback, nope it wasn’t, feel free to go back and watch it again.
