    When I was a kid I thought up a spike hammer design that would swing and puncture armor and then had a hole in the spike that it would fire a flame thrower out of. I was always disappointed in the use of flame weapons because they only seemed to be for show and I never saw one used to cause actual damage. Injecting some flammable gel and causing a spark could actually disable a robot.

      Neat idea, but I'd have to imagine even the tiny area required to allow for a flame would drastically increase the force needed to puncture any armor, and would possibly easily be damaged in a hit, potentially closing it off. Also without a pilot light outside the spike, you'd probably end up just shooting out gas. I don't think you could get a flame to actually propogate outside a nozzle that small.
      Again, neat idea, htough. It'd be fun to mockup and try.

      @@isgonrain what about a needled design? Just far larger. call it the wasp and you have a decent bot design. inject gas then spark it. giant fireball.
      only counter would be to move.
      or you could place it in a sort of drill hole cutter thing. drill out the edges and inject gas. would be more consistent, but slower. you'd want a flywheel for the drill for the required force. if the flywheel was heavy enough, it could likely provide enough force to keep the drill gripped. once you have a hole, pump your butane in and watch the fireball. have like a ignition chamber on the arm or wherever, and you now have a gimmicky but fun to watch robot.

    The sad reality I always understood about things like BattleBots is that their strategies closely resembled nature in hyperdrive: you start out with countless designs that are truly innovative and interesting... only to have them actually compete, and like 95% of them are weeded out in relatively short order, so that a couple years later you really only get slight iterations on maybe 4-5 basic archetypes.
    It's not about what's 'cool', it's about what statistically wins the most matches.

    The scorpion "tail" looks like a great design, but it does not appear to have the mass needed to do significant damage.

    • @camerongulley3791
      @camerongulley3791 년 전 +31

      Am I wrong in thinking that having 2 spikes means less penetration power, too? I would think 1 single heavy spike would be more effective, and perhaps more evocative.

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 년 전 +7

      @@camerongulley3791 those kind of spikes wouldn't be for true penetration, but to just slightly bite into the armor of the other robot to help it "stick" to it at the moment of impact when it might otherwise glance off, which would help it transfer more of its kinetic energy into the target.
      Idk if the mechanism of the tail would be able to get that small mass up to a high enough speed to do sufficient damage, but a small number of short dull points like those were a common design feature of medieval maces and warhammers to help them more efficiently transfer their impact into the curved surfaces of plate armor on a moving opponent rather than getting deflected off. (The image on Wikipedia's page for "lucerne hammer" has a rather pronounced 4 pointed version on the hammer side of it if you want a visual aid)
      You're not technically wrong, but they only need to bite/dent a tiny bit into the metal (even 1mm would be plenty) to get a grip on it and there being 2 means that if it hits on an angled surface it will start turning in towards the armor it's hitting rather than away from it because the force at the first moment of impact will produce a torque toward rather than away from the target.
      They won't penetrate, but they're less spikes and more grip studs, so they're not meant to.

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 년 전 +1

      Well, KineticEnergy=Mass×Velocity²
      Normally hammer bots are heavy because they are limited to a maximum of 180° and the faster you go through the arc the less time you have to put energy into the weapon so you quickly hit diminishing returns by trying to increase velocity.
      That said, if they really do have a 600° arc they have more time and distance to apply energy in AND there's some whip-like physics going on where each segment decelerates by transferring its velocity to the next segment all the way to the striking head then _maybe_ it could hit hard enough to do damage.
      On paper at least, it would be somewhere between a spinner bot and a hammer bot in that it would hit higher kinetic energies like a spinner bot because of being able have more of a rotation arc to get up to speed but be able to hit angles that spinners can't as they're usually stuck to attacking the stronger sides, corners, and edges rather than the top.
      In principle there's nothing stopping a small mass from totally messing up a bot IF they can get it going fast enough.
      Engineering that "if" without just making a gun or something comparably dangerous to the spectators is the hard part. Hypothetically possible, but whether they can is an entirely different matter that I have no answer for.

      @KG-th3cr 년 전 +2

      I would consider making the tail more of a "pushing" weapon kind of along the lines of a bot like Bronco where it's power lies nt launching other bots. I don't think piercing into another bot would be good as it could easily get stuck. Something with a gas-pressurized ram or the like.

    I think the core issue of using multiple smaller bots is the power scaling. Like you don't have the option of balancing offensive and defensive capabilities. You get hit and you get knocked out without doing much damage by a spinner etc. You need to have the offensive capabilities to show off to the crowd and TV but also able to survive. Its also more expensive as basically everything you need for internals is multiplied by the amount of multi-bots

    Great video. I’ve been an engineer/ toolmaker for 50 years. I also had my own CNC machine shop I’ve sold to my sons. They have Haas mills and use Solid Works just like on the show. My point is that this show has advanced so far from the beginning. While you do require many skills to build one of these to seriously compete look at what price. Unless you have huge sponsors and a bunch of computer geeks , mechanical genius’s and access to expensive CNC equipment it’s not too realistic these days. I’ve even sketched out designs I think could compete but then again there are ones I never thought had a chance and yet did good. I never thought Tantrum would take the nut last year. Comes down to a bit of luck as well as driving skills. Just like in football …..on any given Sunday. Now what I’d REALLY like to see is put a limit on $$$$$. Get the creativity going on what can be done on a budget. I believe Jackpot was a much less expensive bot. I applaud them. Rusty was a crowd pleaser even though he didn’t have what it takes. I understand what the producers look for. I was involved in Discovery Channels Biker Build offs several times. Don’t get me wrong it’s all great stuff but I’d love to see BUDGET BOTS!

      @@xgtwb6473 well the more I watch and see just how much machining is going into these things you have to wonder at what cost. My opinion this has now become like a reality show and drama . Teams are getting really big. Everyone has a theme and goes crazy with outfits and what not. It’s simply evolved so much. Not saying it’s a bad thing but I still like the more on a budget builds . Showcase true engineering. But it’s evolution I guess because it is certainly far and away off from what it started. I really enjoy critiquing the bots . I can see where problems are. Lol maybe I should become a consultant. Example. Blip. I love Arron Hill and think he’s brilliant but the last battle I watched he couldn’t get under enough to flip his opponent. A simple design change can fix that. Look at Hydra , that low long flipper can get under anything. All still comes down to driving skill. Just like in football. On any given Sunday any team could beat any team. All in all it’s a blast. Cut the budget in half and see just how creative it could become. BUDGET BOTS lol.

    I have really enjoyed your videos and how much you pit into it. Here is video idea you can do for the future that I would love to see. You could do a video every Battlebot put into the competion and tell everything about it. It's weaknesses, what rules it thrived on that may not be around today, its wins, and ranking it overall as how good it would be from its modern competion. I would love to see its different forms in battle and which versions were way bad or very good with no driving issues. This could be a series to look at all these bots until none are left to rank every Battlebot ever on the show and many versions that were used throughout the years and tools. Thanks again for your hard work and creativity on these Battlebot videos. Hope you enjoy this idea, I am not a big robot tech person, so mind any tech grammar that may sound wrong lol.

    • @hex1044

      I think the security who the ACME team argued with must have been working for Boeing, who were also letting BattleBots use their land. If they banned the ACME guy from their property, but BattleBots still allowed him in, they would have grounds to kick BattleBots out. Hence he wasn’t allowed to compete sadly.

I mean a regular vertical spinner that can move around circling the opponent with its weapon always aimed at the other and maybe a button with a pre programed command that makes the robot charge when you have its back in the line of sight. And for full body spinners, a shield in one side and a spinner in the other, so that you charge with the shield and push it to the wall before its weapon catch speed, then another pre programed command that makes the robot move backward, rotate 180 degrees so that you can charge again with the weapon

    If I somehow managed to find myself in charge of a BattleBot design team, it would have a spinner that encircled the entire robot as the main weapon, probably with some secondary weapons mounted at specific points behind the spinner. The entire robot would also be vertically symmetrical, making it far more resilient against getting flipped.

    Just a casual observer, what I observed is that there are 2 types of design. One type is just to show off, the other is to win! The show offs are usually, tall clumsy and with fancy shapes. The winners are mostly spinners with few flippers, relatively simple/functional design. They win because they can deliver a lot of energy quickly and frequently. In this review, the drill and the scorpion are obvious show offs, like they say it’s like taking a knife to a machine gun fight.

    I'd love to see an automatic tracking function coupled with a projectile launcher for crossbow bolts. Remote control aiming from the arena edge isn't easy. Adding an automated process to it would help tremendously. It doesn't even need to aim per say. Rather, it could be a system that the driver arms and the robot automatically fires at opponents as they pass. Basically, a "tripwire" of sorts.

    Zap reminds me of a robot I dreamed up as a kid. It's the name only, though, since my "design" (read as: doodles) used a large capacitor as it's weapon. The idea was that it would charge up that capacitor from a separate battery and use a metal prong on the front to stab another bot and electrocute it, hopefully frying the electronics inside, while thick rubber insulation protects it from harming itself. No way in hell would it ever get approved, large capacitors are _dangerous_ at the best of times, even if whatever they are in is turned off. Though I can imagine the frantic dance to avoid that poke of death and high likelyhood of smoke, fire and small electrical explosions would be fun as hell to watch.
