To this day “there’s two sides to the story and I wish I knew yours” flew over a lot of heads. We don’t have to like each other, we don’t have to agree on everything, but we gotta share this land and this planet. One day I hope, this song won’t have a meaning other than to show how we had to have a song show us in broad terms how bitter we are to each other

This song is the best, literally. It’s like he encapsulated American racial tension and put it honestly in two peoples shoes. All the things many people think but never say out loud, so it never gets resolved. I especially love the bridge where he talks about the cycle continuing, placing blame, and how divided we are. The song also takes accountability for both sides. Joyner really outdid himself here.

It explains the whole problem that’s been going on for hundreds of years. Especially in the early/mid 1900s. Racism and division between both Black and White people isn’t necessarily a skin colour issue it’s a mindset issue. Racist people exist because of past issues between races and because they held onto that and spread their toxic point of view and infected other people. All people despite origin deserve love and peace, we should all get on and not see colour because deep down we’re all the same, we’re all human after all and at the end of the day skin colour/appearance doesn’t matter it’s who you are who determines who you are. Spread love not hate. And this is from the perspective of a white person. I mean sure I may have been “racist” in the past (when I was a kid) I thought it was strange that other people have different skin colour and then I learned that it wasn’t strange and that it was a normal part of humanity. But I guess we were all kind of like that as a kid because we were naive and hadn’t really seen the world.

@@justaguyonyoutube there is objective good and evil. It's objectively good to help someone in need and objectively evil to murder. That's according to pretty much any culture, ever.
It's more nuanced than that, of course, but on a really basic level you're just wrong.
There is an inborn moral compass - it isn't all nature or all nurture. And that makes complete sense, just in an evolutionary sense.
Good and evil may or may not be "just" human conceptions, I won't claim one or the other as truth, but it's either dishonest or naive to suggest that they don't exist. They certainly do, as ideas, or we wouldn't be talking about it in the first place.
All or nothing approaches to complex and nuanced issues are silly. You're making a very extraordinary claim and presenting a self-assured veneer as if you know the truth. People have argued these things for thousands of years and we will likely continue arguing these things for thousands more. A little humility wouldn't kill you; you don't have all the answers.

I was lol. Here is a bit I wrote for my students to try to relate to them.
Every time I’m in a school I feel miniscule
Sit down and do your work; obey the rules
Just staring into space; I feel like a fool
I hate this place and their damned rules
I get treated like a kid; shit, I am grown
Since I have been little; I’ve made it on my own
I don’t need no help; it don’t matter none
I am my own family; I am number one
I’m living on the streets, can’t say it no other way
I’m living on the streets, living day to day
I’m living on the streets, without a long term plan
I’m living on the streets, I’ll take it right outta yo’ hand
I will steal and burglarize and sell all that I can
I will stack my cheese in the palm of my right hand
Don’t you turn your back; you don’t understand
You are not my friend; I am what I am
I don’t have a job, and I work the streets
I am living for today and that is all I need
I put food in my mouth and all my clothes are fine
You really ain’t nothing if you haven’t done no time
I’m living on the streets, can’t say it no other way
I’m living on the streets, living day to day
I’m living on the streets, without a long term plan
I’m living on the streets, I’ll take it right outta yo’ hand
My life is what it is, no one sees the things I see
For all that I have wronged, this is my penalty
It just goes to show that there was no plan for me
Living in this hell is my eternity
I should’ve stayed in school, I should have tried my best
It’s hard when your support needs more and you get less
No one read me stories when I was very young
Mom and dad were not around; their life was getting drunk
If only someone cared and could see through all my pain
Maybe then just maybe, I could start to build again
A little bit of hope, a sign that life is good
Until that day happens, you’ll find me in the ‘hood

White guy here. What I got from this song was that there's a point on both sides. Okay, that sounds basic as fuck... except I mean there's REALLY a case on both sides. Whites and blacks spend so much time hating each other and killing each other that there's almost no understanding at all. But then when we try to understand each other, we also fight that shit "Trying to steal black culture", "Paying my taxes for your food stamps".... so there's a misunderstanding and we do it to each other. That's sad. We could do better.
