  • In this video I'm going to show you how to sew a reusable face mask with filter pocket. This medical face mask can be sewn in 5 minutes! Great mask pattern to batch sew masks for hospitals quickly. These mask are super comfortable to wear by themselves (with or without the filter), over the top of hospital PPE masks and are made of washable materials. No elastic, no pleats to sew, have a flexible nose band and fit the face really well. No ear pain since the straps do not sit directly behind your ear-making it ideal for those 12+ hour shifts. Great beginner sewing pattern.
Dimensions for kids pattern (from what I've tested) is 9 x 7-following the same directions to sew and assemble.
Disclaimer: These masks are not going to prevent you from contracting any sort of respiratory illness. They are meant to be used as a temporary solution and will only provide minimal protection.

Before beginning to batch sew masks, I highly encourage you to contact your local hospital, clinic or long term care facilities to see if they have specific types of masks they are looking for. I’ve heard many hospitals are only accepting specific masks types.

I have a collection of 11 other tutorials/how-to docs for making masks. Certainly no where close to all that are available out there, but enough to see a pattern of practices. This presentation is by far the best, the most elegant, the simplest and fastest I have viewed. Instructionally, it is superior. It holds strictly to a chronological series of short steps, using broadly comprehensible language and annotations. The settings for lighting and context focus the eye on the task at hand, with minimal distraction. The presenter's demeaner is relaxed, friendly, competent, and extremely likeable. As an educator with a Ph.D. in communications, I assess this presentation to be the very best of exceptionally well done.

You know what's a super addition? I had some of those spring toggles like they use on sleeping bags and windbreakers, to cinch things closed. I had the idea, that, instead of having to tie and untie it, you run those ends through a toggle, overhand knot them together, so the won't slide out. Then you just put the loop behind your neck, pull it up in place and cinch it down. Want to drop it, for a second? Just pinch the toggle. It's much easier to get the tightness just right, too. I'll bet lots of people have old jackets that they never use the waist cinch toggle or the hem
toggles. I just made my first mask today and did that. It's sweet! It would be so much easier for older folks, too, instead of having to tie something behind their heads. Quicker getting the kids ready, too.

Hi, Thank you for this instructional video. I wanted to suggest a tip that some who are new to sewing may find useful...
When folding over the side edges to sew the pockets for the cord - no need to sew the cord into the pocket (my kids have sewn a few cords into the mask rather than the pockets). Simply sew along the edge like you do - then insert a drinking straw into the pocket - the cord will easily move through the straw and the straw can then be removed and reused.
This is a wonderful design that has provided a close fit to most everyone I've shared or provided it to.
Aside from using the "shop towels" as filters, I've replaced the cord you use with "para cord". This is very strong and durable - and I've fitted the masks with dual-cord spring-stoppers. These operate with just a press of a small button and have been very operable by young children and seniors with dexterity/arthritis issues.
    Cheers!

This is the best design out there! It does not pull on your ears because you tie it behind you head. That also makes it completely adjustable so that there is little to no gap on the sides. Using a cut down coffee filter for the pocket makes it filter much better than most masks and you breathe and not sweat a lot wearing it! Just come in from shopping and take it off by the ties, remove the disposable filter and dunk it immediately into hot soap and water in a bowl. Wash it well while cleaning your hands at the same time then dry it in the sun and it’s ready to go for the next outing! Great job on the design of this mask. Thank you very much for doing this video you have helped so many people and we are very grateful..

I live in Oregon, and had been making and using these masks for months. I had cut filters from a hepa vacuum filter, but had not been using them.
    Then the wildfires began burning.
I popped in a filter, and discovered that once I had my nose piece well adjusted (I modified this design to add a piece of plastic- wrapped wire, like the closure for a bag of coffee), the smell of smoke was cut by 90% or more.
I've been wearing my filtered mask indoors 24/7, even in bed, and I'm very happy with the results, which are underscored every time I drop my mask to drink or eat.
This is a great design. Thean you for sharing it.

Synthetic clothesline will melt. Run those snipped ends through a candle flame to quickly fuse those loose thread ends together so they don't fray. But not too long, because it will burn, melt, turn black, and drip melted "plastic" on your hands.

So here is an update on my post from 5 days ago: I was able to make a couple of these masks (quite a feat for a retired heavy equipment mechanic ;-) )
I was impressed not only that I remembered how to thread my wife's Singer...but could even sew something. I'm sure it took me A LOT longer than most people hear and they are NOT as pretty as most of you folks would do...but hey...I got it done and they are actually very comfort. I finished my wife's last night and mine this morning. We had to go for groceries so figured we should give them a try. We were quuite p[eased with them.
So here's my opinion: easy to make and comfortable to wear!!
    Thanks again for sharing. Cheers!

    • @canoetipper019
      @canoetipper019 4 년 전 +5

@@KathgoKat well I sracked the two pieces then sewed them together for those 3 inches. Then fold the top piece up over itself at the stitch line and press it. This should leave you with three layers at the top. Now flip the whole thing over and fold the single layer up over the stitch line and press it again. Now you should have 4 layers of material with the stitched line at the bottom. Now take the top two loose edges together and fold them back down and press.
This should leave you with the same surface area that you started out with when you stacked the two pieces of material...only now you should had a slit in the middle...(this is where I exclaimed, "TA-DA"...making my wife give me yet another funny look. ;-) )
I hope this helps. (Ha, look at me acting like I know how to sew...lol. Fix a bulldozer, yes...build a house, did that...and now I can say I sewed a couple masks.) Just don't look too close at the straightness of the stitching. lol

My wife made 5 of these today. She doesn't do a lot of sewing and said these were much easier than the masks with pleats (which took her 4 days to make 5). I had a bunch of 550 paracord that we used for the string. I tried 3 different mask patterns and ultimately chose yours. I made 100 from all the fabric squares, fabric I had on hand, pillowcases and cotton shirts that I no longer needed. I made a short video on social media and in one day sold all 100 I had made. All the proceeds were donated to Make-A-Wish CNY in honor of upcoming World Wish Day on April 29. Since we can’t have our usual fund raisers this was a great and fun way to raise money while helping friends who needed masks. The only materials I had to order was 3mm parachute cord and/or 3/8" gross grain ribbon to use for the ties. Your instructions were the best I've seen. Just wanted to send you a huge THANK YOU for sharing your pattern. The masks are fantastic. They were so well received that many friends bought to gift to their friends. I also used old cotton star pattern aprons from a previous Make-A-Wish event that made masks for the staff at our regional office. It was a wonderful way to support my favorite charity while enjoying making them as well. Stay well and thank you from all our wonderful wish kids who will benefit!

Used paperclips & clothespins as 'wonder clips' and basted the whole thing together by hand with a needle borrowed from a neighbor. Stretched out a big paperclip to use as nose wire. MODIFICATION: When sewing the initial square, instead of square corners, sew a diagonal in 1/2 inches on either side. Then cut away excess fabric. Turn it rightsides out and adjust so it has a soft corner. NOW when you are enclosing the string/rope, there isn't the thick lump that is hard to sew thru.

Thank you so dang much!!! I haven't sewn anything in decades and couldn't even remember how to run a sewing machine. My mother in law had one of those little "mini" machines tucked away in a closet and I pulled it out and dusted it off and did some test runs with it. Then I found your tutorial and knew I could at least sew straight lines!!! My husband wears glasses and doesn't like the masks that hook around the ears, and we've tried a couple crocheted masks that had ties on both ends... He liked those, but they still weren't ideal. When he saw how this one goes around the back of the neck and then comes up and ties behind his head he said "please, baby... I like that one!". So I made one and it's no piece of art (LOL!) but he's very happy with it and so am I because now I can make even more. No crazy pattern PDF to download, no delicate cutting, no curvy sewing, just a nice straight edge all around. Ok, enough typing... I have masks to make!!!! Thanks again, "SEW" much!!!!

Hi finally.....THANK YOU! As an RN in LTC I have been searching for days for a credible mask pattern for myself and family friends and co-workers. This is the third different one I make and by far the best for mass production efficiency and fit. I tried the pipe cleaner and thought it was a bit too flimsy. Florist wire, bread ties (three braided), produce ties all work but one of the best items I have used is the flat metal covered strip on bags of coffee....flat sturdy comfortable...so round up All your coffee drinking friends and hit them up for the strips...ps, this is not an ad, but, Starbucks bags strips are perfect. Also I hear hanging file clips work as nose guard, but I have yet to try this...i much prefer Coffee to filing😉. As for the ties, hooded items with pull strings (yank them out...priorities people), shoelaces, binding/bias tape, cotton yarn braided to desired thickness. This is all about “creative thinking” which is the ongoing theme of nursing education. Stay Well and great job!!!

I was making a different pattern for my hospital and while they work well they were too time intensive. This pattern works up so quickly and I love the pocket. For those who can't get the cord--sacrifice an old T shirt. Cut into one inch strips the desired length and then pull them. They will curl up and not fray. One extra large T shirt gave me 24 ties. And you really don't need the metal nose piece--they fit quite well without. Thank you so much for this pattern.

Thanks R Lax. The tshirt straps is what I wanted to know about. The clothesline I'm using is bulky and not very easy to tie. It's the synthetic kind. I wonder why I can't use the all cotton clothesline. But the tshirt should be easiest to tie. One tip I'd add, I used all batik fabrics and find it difficult to breathe through. The pleated kind with one layer batik and one layer flannel was much easier to breathe through. But my husband doesn't care for the flannel. He uses it anyway until I make one with plain cotton on the inside. Idk if batik is best but it does have a much tighter weave so I will use it on one side, but just one side.

Thank you for sharing this video, very helpful!! To everyone making masks for health care providers Please try to use latex-free elastics or rubber bands if you are donating these masks to hospital workers. Regular elastics are made of natural latex, which is a sap from the hevea tree. About 17% of healthcare workers are allergic to latex because of the gloves they wear and their symptoms can worsen if their skin is in contact with latex. It’s a cumulative allergy, like bee stings, so the symptoms can become severe overnight when you’re exposed to latex. Once you develop this allergy it’s for life and there’s no treatment or cure. It’s best to avoid wearing latex / NRL gloves too if you can. The safe ones are NITRILE or VINYL gloves. Stay safe 🙌

I am so glad someone shared this video with me! Finally, I have found a pattern that meets my skill level. I used pipe cleaners for the nose bridge because that's what I have on hand. I am using Oly-Fun non-woven material for the "filter". I sew 2 layers together and slip them in the pocket for me and my family. I like that others can use the filter of their choice that is available to them. I also made t-shirt "yarn" ties from old t-shirts because that's what I had, and it worked well. Thank you again for doing this video. It is the only one I have found that uses only straight and simple lines yet doesn't fog my glasses. And the size is easy to adjust for different face sizes since it's just a rectangle. 😊❤

@@homemadeonourhomestead I found coated garden wire at Lowe's. I'm going to try that next. That is a good idea. It retains shape better than the pipe cleaners. I think I may modify it and leave a little pocket for the person I gift it to. They can choose the medium they like best. Thanks for a simple and versatile pattern!

I used an old T-shirt to cut a strip for the string. It works great. It’s soft and slightly stretchy, but also grips the fabric of the mask so it doesn’t slide around on the string when you get it adjusted just right for your face. It also stays tied, which is a problem I’ve been having with some strings. This is a GREAT mask. I’ve made three different kinds of masks and this is the style I reach for every time. My husband and a couple of our friends also prefer it to the pleated type of mask. It works for many sizes of face/heads. Goes on easily, but most importantly, comes off easily.

Jeanine Webb after I stretched it into a strip, it’s about 54” long without pulling on it, but it has enough give that it can be up to 60” when I stretch it out all the way.

Just finished my first mask for my husband. It fits great. He has no feeling in his finger tips so I used 1/4 elastic instead of the cord. He just couldn't tie it behind his head. I put the elastic through a toggle stopper and he can adjust by sliding the stopper. Thank you so much.

I made a couple of these and we really like them. I love how the string goes around my neck, allowing me to carry the mask at the ready. We added spring locks with a button like those used on tent bags and sleeping bags, to hold the two loose ends of the string together. It also is easier to slide the spring lock than it is to tie it. Great design.

It's a great design. I've struggled making fastenings adjustable to fit different people. Lately I've been adding a piece of fabric with velcro on to loop the elastic through (from both sides of the mask). I wasn't sure about this initially as the first mask I made had ties but I found I caught my hair in it while trying to fasten the ties at the back. But I think as you only tie this once (not 2 separate ties) it may be ok . I'm going to give it a go. Thank you. It's a simple design to do too.

This is THE BEST mask to sew and wear!!!
I put it on with the good side facing out; then I lift the mask up to cover my nose; next, on both sides, place the upper strap over each ear. Then pull on the bottom straps on each side to tighten the mask. Final step: tie the straps behind your neck.
I put the mask on at home as I get ready to go out and wear it around my neck until I need to actually put it on. This way I don't get it all sweaty before I really need to have it on and I never leave home without it.

Thank you for a wearable mask pattern and instructions. I made one pleated mass, but it was really uncomfortable and didn't stay in place. Next, I made shaped masks which are OK, but YOURS look more comfortable. Our Governor just said we're required to wear masks when out now, so my fabric is in the washing machine right now and I now have a project to keep me busy today while staying home! My poor husband and adult son will just have to put up with the less than masculine fabric I had in my stash. Thank you again...and stay healthy!

Got out the sewing machine that I barely know how to use and made 14 of these in 5 days! I used braided cotton 9/64 cord from the hardware store and white pipe cleaners for the nosepiece. Blue shop towels folded in quarters for the filter. Also, I cut the cord about 65", 55" was too short. Thank you so much for this pattern and tutorial! edit: I found it easy to adjust the mask by putting the loop over my head, scrunching the mask up to my neck almost to the point of choking, tying it at the top of my head and then adjusting the mask to fit my face.

This is the best pattern I've tried! I altered it a bit by using a single 10"x16" piece of fabric. It came out great! I didn't have the cord she mentioned in the vid, but I did have several pairs of shoe laces (no idea). I tied one pair together and the knot is at the part that goes behind my neck. I even made a tiny version for my 5 yo with a 6"x8" piece of fabric and a 23" loop of 1/8" elastic (finished is 5.5"x3.75" and loop is 22")
