The wife and husband realising they had to face each other instead of working together as pairs was too much for me.
That was really sad, but I never understood why they both risked coming back. If either of them won the other still could have gotten the money.
@@swopekat eh.. yeah if he or she won. But you miss one point here. The would still lost her husband or his wife if the lose. So it doesn't really matter if both play or Just one, if there don't win there the still be killed. And you saw that the husband killed himself after what happend whit his wife. That could happend too, if only one was playing too. Or it would be the wife that killed herself then. Really that you win in such a game are really what 1%?. I mean Sure the game Was about the money and surviving but this is about a man that couldn't life anymore after what happend whit his love. And like i said even if just one did this game, the chance that he/she win the game are really low. So the would highly still lost one the wife or the husband. And when you lost a loven one..not everyone can get back up :( but like all the others the needed money but idk the reason why.

I wish we'd have gotten to see how their game played out. I bet it was absolutely gut wrenching if they had filmed it but cut it out due to time or something.

All the character's death was already foreshadowed in Episode 2. Ali is eliminated because sang-woo took his marble the same as he took his boss money. Deok-su jumped on the bridge and was eliminated in the game by falling off the bridge. Sae-byeok die because she was stabbed on her neck same as she threatened someone with a knife on their throat. Sang-woo almost commit suicide in the bathtub and was eliminated from the game by killing himself. Also, the old man died from a brain tumor. Gi-hun swore on his mother's life, and his mother died in the end. Wow.

@@cokoladnatortica I would love to be proven wrong, that in season 2 he goes back and makes more difference than literally the sack of nothing he did in the 1st season. He survived purely out of plot armor and then wasted away for a year not honoring the dying wishes of his friends. Like I loved this show and I do want to see him go through growth lol, but growth in my eyes means not breaking your daughter's trust once again. Like sure, I'll see it as he has to leave in that moment to catch the last minute train to more PTSD but I'm genuinely confused what he hopes to accomplish there when all he can do in my eyes is tell the other contestants he's been through this before, but many people are still willing to throw their lives away for the hope of a chance at a better life regardless. BUT YEAH IF THAT MAKES SENSE LOL
The only real problem I had with the show was the glass bridge blowing up and causing the girls death. Goes against the entire “fair chance” thing these games are supposed to have

@@enderreaper1482 I also think it is kinda dumb to just blow up the glass. It doesn't look like a well-calculated plan from 001 as it could (and did) injure players.
It's a methapor on how democracy is said to be "fair and equal" but a lot of people are disadvantaged, vice versa. Like in the voting scene, the one in power is still the one in control, not the people
all 3 winners experienced the same blast from the glass. That's the fairness in a game where human life doesn't matter. Not saying I'm not upset about it either since it was a shitty way I think to kill off a character quick but they all ran the risk of getting hit with shrapnel
I think it's due to time limit. Maybe if players still on the glass bridge, the glass bridge still blowing out the players.

The deaths of the main players are also foreshadowed. The bully(player 101) jumped of the bridge to escape the thugs in the beginning of the movie, he has a similar death in game 5 when he falls off the bridge. Similarly, player 67 threatened a guy with a knife for her money that was lost and had a similar death when she was stabbed in the neck before the final squid game. Additionally, when player 456 wins, he also exits the train and enters the plane last at the end of the series, this supports the point of the series that "the last will be first" which is also a biblical scripture. There is alot of hidden details...

Sae-byeok also has a scar on her neck, which is probably foreshadowing her death as well.
Ali takes his boss's envelope of money, then runs away and leaves him to deal with his injury, much like how Sang-woo takes his marbles and leaves him to die.
The very first scene shows Gi-hun and Sang-woo playing the squid game and roughhousing, just like how they fight to the death at the end.
the saddest thing about 067 death is that, if she survived, she AND Gi-Hun would win, because the last game was a team game, and they would be in the same team.
I think one of them would have died during that game regardless, she was too weak to really be a threat and would either be easily killed or not be able to help Gi-hun.
I think that the rule is to have only one winner.

One of the things I love about Korean films is that they do such a good job portraying the human emotion and I always feel something for the characters.

Just realized, the game host knew no one would pair with the old man so ordered the guard to bring whoever didn't get into a group back to the dorm
but then the old man was invited to the team and this explains why the woman wasn't killed and was sent back to the dorm.
Or it was down to an odd number, and it wouldn’t have been “fair” to just kill the unpicked one. The main character has been nice to him since day one and outside the game. There was a decent chance that he would pick him.
I thought they let her live because simply killing her for not finding a partner went against the primary principle of the games which is to let everyone involved play a fair and level game. I tend to agree that 001's plan likely was to exit the game before a partner challenge - believing nobody would partner with him.
I rewatched the series and i just find it ironic that the gift that Gihun gave his daughter was wrapped similar to the coffins of the game. The gift itself was a gun shaped lighter. The gun part of the gift foreshadowed alot of shooting later in the series and the lighter part foreshadowed those who died in the games is then cremated.

Like during the events he was going to sit out on… he knew the odds were against him… especially when ol’ girl was able to sleep which that was supposed to be him behind the scenes but it didn’t pan out as expected…. That’s why he chose to lose the marble game because it was unpredictable after that

It was such good foreshadowing however!! She had the power over that one man in Episode 2 with almost killing him in the neck, but then in that moment she had no power at all. It’s such a sad but amazing show b

That level of equality was total bullshit. Because in the bridge game the altered events so the glass worker couldn’t use his skills. The men are able to use their bodies to gain advantage, and so are people with critical thinking skills. But not the guy who has work experience with glass? That’s not equality. Especially when somebody else tried it before during that game. That show of “kindness” or apology was a joke to manipulate players.That’s why they had to vote too. To feel like a democracy and put onus on the players - “well you must’ve wanted it because you came back for more!”
Exactly. They were set up to fail from the beginning. There was 0 equality the moment il-nam joined the game because he had an advantage over everyone else from the beginning.

Gi-hun seemed so needy and greedy until i learned about his situation. As i watched through, I started notice he was actually the kindest person out of all 456 contestants. He only ever attempted to kill someone: the old man, when it was his only option besides death. Even after, he cried in the mans' arms before he "died", and that scene was really powerful for me. Gi-Hun is my favorite character in this show.

Something I stopped wondering about, but was reminded of after watching the synopsis provided by this video, is: why those twenty or so people, who didn’t decide to return to the game, decided not to return to the game. Also how, if so, did they turn their lives around?
Also, if Jun ho is fully dead? He was shot in the shoulder and fell into the sea but that might not mean death? Edit: just realized it was discussed in the video. I’m pretty sure he’ll still be alive. It’s all about the surprises and twists.
i believe he is fully dead, even if he could survive the shot, he wouldn't survive the fall, if he somehow did survive the fall, he propably wouldn't be able to swim to a safe place and would drown, IF he somehow didn't drown, he wouldn't be able to get help before dying from bleeding.
The two brothers both shot each other in opposite shoulders. If the front man can survive a shot to the shoulder, then Jun Ho can. Plus, like the narrator said, it's safe to assume if you don't see an on screen dead body, they probably aren't dead.
idk if i remember correctly, but the front man told someone to "watch over" the players who didn't return the second time. i highly doubt they were able to live freely, and knowing how secretive the organization is, prolly killed those guys off. who knows, maybe they didn't and we'll see them in the 2nd season!

I think there is something you are obviously missing. When he (the cop) found the logs of the players, it appears that they run multiple games per year, judging by the number of volumes per year. This game was just one of many for that year. But the book of winners only shows one winner per year. So to me, this means the game is continuing, and all the winners from the year will eventually return to face off until there is an ultimate winner for the year. That winner then can become the front man if he chooses because anything else is not exciting enough. The VIP’s are funding the games, but their ages suggest they were never players in the game itself. But I would bet each of them has their own island and their own games that they play ran by their own front man. Because the old man was the host of this game, it seems only logical. Because gamblers are addicts, they need the fix. What would be better than going to a new game every week? I cannot see them waiting for just a yearly game. And the cop was shot in his shoulder. The exact same place he had retrieved his phone from. I think he was shot but the majority of the shot hit the phone. So, I guess we shall see!
This series is so full of moral dilemmas that I honestly didn't know who was right and who was wrong...every choice and mindset felt wrong and right at the same time

But at the same time....the gamekeeper did give the players another chance in life and as the old man said, no one forced them to play their game (tricked still imo) and even gave them a choice to leave unharmed. They even kept their promise and tried to keep the game fair and handed over the prize money when the winner was declared. Technically is it wrong to watch and enjoy (IT IS MESSED UP) the show if the people already consented and are going to do it anyway.
You're, in a way, taking advantage of prople in an unfortunate situation ...but at the same time still giving them a prize for their efforts that could turn their lives around and in exchange you get your entertainment that your life lacks. Since they consented, it's like a symbiotic relationship but the other party just has way more risks.... ah damn :/

I think the marble game was set up so the old man would be left without a partner, giving an excuse to "eliminate" him. That might also be the reason he stalled until last minute, so other players wouldn't see that he wasn't truly killed.

218 was very calculative, even after they went home and he let player 199 use his phone, bought him food, and gave him bus fare. He saw him help 456 and knew he could use it to his advantage later by helping him then.
218 was the best player imo. He deserved to win more than anyone. Nothing about these games is moral, everyone knows what they're signing up for.
218 also put his mom's stuff up as collateral for his embezzlement schemes, shouldn't have been suprising he would stab someone he doesn't know in the back

Why is no one talking about Junho’s storyline?! I was rooting for his success of exposing the game and the twist of finding his brother is so insane! A major twist and totally helped pick up suspense!

The saddest deaths were Ji-Young and Ali, I wasted my tears on Il-Nam and the best death was Deuk-Su and Mi-Nyeo but I cried the most on 𝐀𝐥𝐢.

Honestly I do not blame 17 for choosing not to reveal his knowledge of glass to some of the others. His reason was logical and understandable . Even though we do not know his full character, based off that act and words he said from that scene I assume he was one of the quiet characters who was watching and observing the others and their actions. Due to most of them killing, starting fights and the backstabbing in general I get why he did not want to do it . Not to mention if he did he would have been bullied and preasured by the others.
and, he could be wrong/ something could happen. it’s instinct to not want to do that LOL, and nobody would actively want to go first in that situation even if they were slightly confident. plus, look his the turned the lights off after 3 successes, that would’ve happened had he gone first too,
even i as a viewed had a feeling the masked/vips were gonna fuck with it because from their crazy mindsets it seems unfair tithe game
For real. Glasses was low key smart to push him because their lives were in his hands. He still had full control and could have waited until the last second if they didn’t cut the lights
I think one of the best/most shocking reveals for me was the detective finding all the past documents. Learning that this has been going on for almost 20 years with no inkling of any investigation. All those people dead/missing but no reports or attempts to connect the dots

I like how the games become progressively about killing one another to survive. I just rewatched tug-of-war coz the strategy there was satisfying to watch but this time I also noticed, especially in the character of the pastor, that they all seemed stunned even though they won, and I realised that it was the first game they had to actively kill someone else to win. In this game though, you can argue that you’re killing for the greater good of saving the whole team; but gradually in the subsequent games it’s all about yourself. Excellent script!

I was actually wondering what would have happened if the old man had of died in that game. I assume he was never in any real danger. That scene really showed the business man’s character and why he was in that situation. He did that to all his clients. He prayed on them and took their money. I knew he was trash the moment i found out he was in debt for being corrupt. Only people willing to take from the poor with no remorse will do that. Only people with very corrupt morals will do that. I knew he was going to trick Ali all along. You cannot trust a business man. A business man is in it for himself and money.

The last game named Squid was the most exciting game I’d ever played which was popular in S. Korea about 35 yrs ago, short-lived, though. Usually 10 or more players play altogether. It’s very brutal, violent game, torn clothes, bruised and scratched body, sometimes broken bone,… such a bloody game.

I really wish the cop returns for season 2. The way they introduced his brother as the frontman was a cheap twist and I hated that they killed him after everything. His side plot was amazing and doesn't deserve that poor ending.

In the end, in my opinion, the VIPS and game creators were truly the worst of them all. The players did awful things, yes, but it’s because they had miserable lives outside of the game and they didn’t just kill each other for fun. The game creators preyed on people who were miserable, knowing that there was a good chance they’d come back because they needed money. The game creators were the ones who enjoyed people killing each other for enjoyment. Yes, I’m mad at characters for being ruthless or betraying one another. But the VIPS and creators are the worst of all.

🦑 GAME! The marbles had me tearing up. The game did everyone dirty, especially the husband and wife even though they weren’t the main characters. It was definitely a game that everyone’s worst came out.
I was bawling at Ali’s death. You’re right. He was too naive and ended up trusting the wrong person 😩😩 Gi Hun ended up taking advantage of the old man even though he was kind to the man all along, especially when he chose to partner up with him instead of leaving him without a partner. The girls, they had a chance to talk about their lives and shared their problems... truly sad but I feel like they purposely added her (ji yeong) in there just so we can see that the other girl wasn’t as cold as we all thought her to be...

The ending was interesting in that he dyed his hair red just like the red cloaks symbolizing he might go back to fight them as another "squid" - there's got to be a tie in with the Korean police and 456 somehow - seemed like the front man came back just like 456 is so there must be a connection - perhaps that's the next series

Whoa I'm glad I found this video because I didn't understand "Squid Game" so well in the end when 001 was dying in the final episode. I started watching it because I heard a lot of people talking about it. I'm a new subscriber. This channel sure will come in handy for me. 👏
I really want to thank you for this recap. I am/was very interested in the show, and all my friends were pretty much harping on me for not having watched it yet. Unfortunately unbeknownst to them, I have an issue with watching things that are too gory/violent/or have assault in them for my own reasons. So, even though part of me wanted to experience the 'cool' mind trippy parts of the show, I knew that if I had watched it, it would have affected me and my life in a very negative way for an uncertain amount of time. Recapping a show like this, that is otherwise unwatchable to someone like me, was actually really enjoyable. I feel like I can appreciate why other (more thick-skinned) people enjoyed it so much. Thumbs up from me, if they do a season 2, I hope you cover it =)
when the old man was pleading for them to stop because he was scared, that message was not for the players but for the front man, it was the same as a safe word used on extreme sex, to let the other know that u dont want to continue or to stop, he was telling Front Man to stop, that was the safe word they used since he was their boss, by stopping the massacre, they were protecting him and not the players themselves

1. Hide and seek with the armed guards as the seekers
2. Hot potato with hand grenades
3. Duck Duck Goose with shotguns

5. Tightrope
6. Last 2 players play chess and loser dies
No in hide and seek.
Like in tug of war there will be 2 teams of 10 going against each other. The seekers carry a pistol with only 1 bullet loaded. When a seeker shoots a hider they get to leave. If all hiders are found they will die from the seekers. But if any remaining seekers can't find any left over hiders. The seekers will die.
Imagine them playing Musical Chairs. Players who are left standing when the song stops get shot.

find a hiding spot gets shot. they have 5 minutes to find all contestants. any hiders that get caught get shot. hiders that haven’t been found by a guard are free to live another day

I think the staff are recruited prisoners. Probably ones with long sentences for violent crimes involving gang activity, but not life sentences. Criminals who don't care being bossed around just as long as they get to inflict violence on people. Basically a typical foot soldier in a gang or cartel, like the yakuza of Japan or something. The Front Man probably gave them an offer of "Work for us and your sentence will be severely reduced, but disobey us, expose us, or put our operation at risk and we will execute you." I don't see a lot of people with life sentences taking that offer because if they can never be free again then what is the point?. The lifers will still be living a prison lifestyle, on the island, without the reward of early release but with the added risk of being shot for disobedience.
Death row inmates I think would be skipped over for being inherently untrustworthy. Join me or die is not the best start to a working relationship that requires the utmost secrecy and loyalty.. Definitely not the best incentive. That's why some of the workers are secretly harvesting organs, because the current incentives aren't enough for some of them. If the staff were going to be confined to the island for the rest of their lives they wouldn't be trying to make money on the side. It's not like there's a Walmart on the island or something. But yeah, I think the staff are recruited from low level criminals with some military training, which is easy to find considering all South Koreans are drafted into the military for basic training.
One thing I don't get is why have those body painted people in the observation/drinking room? Seems like an unnecessary risk to me, leaving their faces uncovered like that. Even if their faces are painted you could still probably recognize them. I don't know, maybe I'm just thinking about this too much. Kind of hard not to, it's a great show.
to be honest the ending really annoyed me. when the bank manager said its been a year and he hasnt touched the money - meaning he hasnt taken care of 067's family like he promised! her brother had to sit in that orphanage with no clue for a whole year !! and then he finally talks to his daughter and tells her he'll see her soon only to abandon her at the last second. just makes me think he's still a dead beat dad.

He's a true A*hole as they calm each other.
But that is what makes him a real character and not just a typical Hollywood good guy who only does good thing that are unrealistic.

I also initially felt that prior to the Big Reveal at the end of the movie about Il-Nam, that the reason he was so gleeful to participate, esp in game 1, is because he'd played this sick version before and he'd been to this camp and won. That's why he was 001. So he was acting as the rabbit of sorts to get people to understand how game would be played

I love the show. Moral-wise, I hated after first 2 games, that people were forced to kill each other and there was ment only 1 finals winner.
I liked the idea people could help each other instead. Scene with Ali, two girls playing marbles - that was heartbreaking and felt really unfair.
The glass stepping stones game had several ways that the players could have gotten through it safely with minimal or no deaths. They could have thrown their shoes at the glass, they could have used the one guy's knowledge, they could have even used a human ladder concept to tap the next pane to check it (it's close enough, or else that suplex wouldn't have worked). But a main theme of the show is that everyone keeps doing the deadly thing, just because they don't trust others.
In the end, the main character's team gets to the end because they consistently choose to help each other, instead of giving into the betrayal and violence everyone else does.

Who knows what would happen here, VIPs ruined it either way.
I’m confident that in the glass bridge game, if anyone tried using the middle bars, they would have been eliminated / shot by a masked man. The rules in the beginning are very clear. You must choose one of the two paths. Taking the middle bar wouldn’t be choosing one of two paths, but blatant cheating.

Probably - at least have him going against In-ho and trying to bring down the games. It's telling that he shot Jun-ho in the shoulder vs. the heart or head as a way to fulfill his duty in front of his men and give his brother a chance vs. a headshot that would kill him instantly. It was a version of what he said to Gi-hun on the call in the final scene - a warning to stay out of the business of the games or next time the shot will be fatal.
